There are people out there that don't like the epilogue, for real??? It's the best bridge between the two games, you build that farm you got in the 1. game yourself and work for your own redemption. And you the player are in the same grief as John about Arthur, that's so deep!

American Venom, for me, is the perfect culmination for the game. The rdr1 main theme comes at full strength. That's the moment when Jim Milton becomes John Marston; the real John Marston from the first game, and with it comes his ultimate downfall; the foundation for rdr1, also providing more impact on Arthur's last advice to his brother. Man I love this game

@@SetTheWild because it's transitioning into the first game and in the first game John is not an outlaw. John is a bounty hunter with a grey past. And if you know anything about the wild west, you would know that many lawmen and bounty hunters were also gang members and outlaws. They played both sides of the law. When the gang gets deputized, that wasn't uncommon in real life. To look at the epilogue as if John plays through that part of the story as if he is a good guy, you missed the point entirely. John is struggling with the charade of being a good person. That is the appeal of John as a protagonist. He want's to be civil but he has a vicious and dangerous streak about him. He's someone not to mess with. You're playing it wrong if you think you have to stay out of trouble with John. John is meant to be played both ways because he is somewhere in the middle just like Arthur. You could be a lawman in the west and play it both ways. That is the nature of this time period. No one is truly good and evil. Even the Van der Linde gang were once Robin Hoods of their time.

@@SetTheWild The game isn't about being an outlaw in the wild west, it is about the fact that the industrialization and progression of society was making it harder and harder for outlaw gangs to operate, and that they were grappling with the fact they were becoming completely obsolete in a world which hated them. I'm pretty sure it states this on like the first opening slide.

So, Dutch's originally stated plan in RDR 2 is to get a bunch of money, go West enough that they can buy land without being recognized, and live off the land. It's exactly what John does in the epilogue. John gets to live the dream Dutch sold the gange at the start of the game, and he does it by (generally) being an honest man. He even shares the dream with the rest of the gang -- at least the ones willing and able to go with him (Charles, Uncle, Sadie(ish)).

I grew up with an absent father and I was a lot closer than I'd like to admit to being a carbon copy of that man. "the epilogue is boring" yeah, man, thats the point! Youre feeling exactly like John Marston does, longing for the old days, the thrills and always feeling that pull to go back. The very pull that leads him to giving in to that urge and ultimately ruins his family. But youre also seeing what Arthur died for, seeing how his ideals were lived up to by the Marston family and how they got to have what he never could, even if it was only for a time. The entire games narrative is a lead up to Arthurs death having meaning and the epilogue is as important as Act 6 in showing what that meaning is all about

I love the epilogue. I just wish there were more (or even one!) missions in New Austin. I know why it's there, but you can play the game and experience every emotional beat without ever going south of McFarland's I've also seen it pointed out that aside from being a transition between the two games, the epilogue also allows us, the player, a chance to wind down and grieve for Arthur. Without it, the end would be harsh and abrupt, and people would then be complaining that there was no way for us to deal with it naturally. It's a heavy story, and the epilogue is necessary,

Goofiilly on my part, I spent the first couple of moves thinking we were going to put down roots. Then every time the gang moved and it got worse and it became clear that they were on the bad path with no happy endings. After the end I just sat there being sad about poor Arthur and was not expecting the epilogue. I was so happy for the family and homestead and the roots they were finally able to put down and the way they were able to build their chosen family including Sadie and Uncle and all that. The frustration I had every time the gang had to move was finally salved.

Man, I'll Never forget playing this masterpiece for the first time 2yrs After it's release without being spoiled.. As a multiple playthrough RDR1 player on 360, I'm not gonna lie, I was pissd that I had switched to John that I stopped playing for a week before I got over Arthur. Once I played through the Pronghorn Ranch missions, I found myself using the 'mundane' time to think Arthur and all he/I had sacrificed for John to get there, thinking about the old gang and better times (Chapter 2 - Horseshoe Overlook), as you would do in real life sometimes. Bruh, my elation at receiving that letter from Sadie, I dashed there post-haste. Charles was the final straw for me, that I teared up all over again when he mentioned returning back to camp at Beavers Hollow, tracked Arthur & John's tracks up the mountain, saw they split up, only to discover his friend, his brother, Arthur's body lonely and lifeless on that cold mountain, only to bury him And Mrs Grimshaw.... Charles is solidified number 1 under the sun, after Arthur ofc. Knowing that he helped John build his family home and ranch, finally start laughing and smiling, and get the quiet family-life bug from John is hands-down the most heartwarming thing in Red Dead 😂 Final thing, the chills I got all over my body when 'American Venom' started to play when Jo stood atop the hill and I sprayed down all of Micah's goons... That soundtrack gets me AMPED!!!

There are stories Arthur can leave half finished, where John can finish them. @@SpaceHobo42 GTA 6’s narrative is a funny one because Grand Theft Auto, as a series, doesn’t take itself quite as seriously as Red Dead Redemption does, and kind of offers a different flurry of features to be excited about. My recommendation is go into GTA 6 with as blankly as you can because if you go in with your expectations too high, there’s a risk it might end up disappointing, at least in some ways you may have wanted more from it. I hope they keep the trend going in rdr 3. Make a new amazing character to have this new journey with and then meeting our old friend arthur again. Arthur said in his journey, that his stay in Blackwater with the gang, was the most funny and enjoyable since a long time.

I think perhaps they could use Landon Ricketts, since it's stated he could have been present during the massacre. That would be a way to implement Roger Clark's idea into the game. I guess it would be a Red Dead Revolver game though, rather than Red Dead Redemption. Either that or maybe it expresses the idea of the exception to every rule with Ricketts having turned a new leaf and redeeming himself while also remaining alive. That could run concurrently to a story about the gang, and eventually culminate in the shootout

The epilogue just hits the first time you play it. I mean, the way chapter 6 ended, how heavy that was. Then boom, the lighthearted springtime vibes in the Hanging Dog Ranch area, gives a sense of renewal. Just a massive change of pace for the better. Especially given how everything in the game went since basically Sean's death and all the craziness that followed.

the epilogue is one of my favorite sections of the game! not long after you first get to pronghorn ranch, john takes the son’s horse to run in the field. i remember how breath taking this moment felt to me on my first play through. after hours of admittedly depressing and stressful gameplay, you’re running full speed through a beautiful field of flowers with mountains and forrest surrounding you. it was incredible. the only other game that’s made me feel that way is the map opening sequence in ghost of tsushima

The epilogue is a love story to all the OG John fans. People who super duper love Arthur are the same people who don't like the epilogue because they never played the first 2 games. They say they are true Red Dead fans but don't know who Red Harlow is, they only know Harlow because of the Uncle memes. They don't know how significant John, Uncle, Abigail, Jack and Beecher's Hope is to the Red Dead Franchise. They don't know how polarizing and traumatizing it is whenever John opens barn doors. Maybe if Rockstar had another 8 years and millions of dollars to burn, they can make another Red Dead game. but all we'll ever have after 2 are remakes and remasters.

All right! You got me. I've been playing RDR2 for the first time, and I'm only on Chapter 3. I can ready tell by the writing something bad was gonna happen with Arthur, and I'm disgruntled from Fallout 4's bad writing that I've really been avoiding the main game and camp. But this was lovely insight on the game. Just lovely. So, now, I'm excited to play it through.

This may be a #hottake but i think that after the scene where John proposes, the player control character should've switched to Sadie Adler. For the Micah revenge missions and especially for the post game free roaming. after all Johns story is about him settling down to become a farmer . But after the epilogue is over, the player can take him back to being an outlaw again lol.

You hit the nail on the head but another thing that defends Abigail’s treatment of John is that even if we see that John and Jack were attacked by thugs this particular time he’s pulling the same excuse he’s been doing for 8 years and she’s right to be tired of it

The epilogue is the much needed breath of fresh air needed after the emotional turmoil from Arthur’s ending. Playing as John, a healthy character we know and love who is in his prime, is an amazing pallet cleanser after countless hours playing a man dying. Even knowing John’s future demise, being able to control his change from wild cowboy to family man with a home of his own is the perfect ending.

The epilogue felt like a whole new game or a sequel, at least. I was imagining as I was playing it, that it would've been insane if after the epilogue, you got to play RDR1 remade with the same engine. That didn't happen, but that would've probably made it the best game ever made..lol

I started many RDR2 playthrough, I replayed many chapters and missions but I have only completed the epilogue once, on my first run. It was not out of boredom of the epilogue my reason is that I could never face again the hearth breaking moment when you must say goodbye to your horse and not much later, to Arthur. In all my time gaming, no moment from any other game ever came close to that. I cried like I didn't think it was possible while playing a game.

it sings to my preteen soul that years later in the sequel, I get to play as John Marston again for countless hours in the post game, and marinate in the limited time of peace he gets before everything goes to hell for as long as I want. You made me realize another bittersweet tragedy for this character is that even though Arthur gifts him this second chance, he’s still not fully ready to take it. And when he finally is, it’s too late and that old life is thrust upon him whether he wants it or not.

Having played John first in rdr1, It’s going in a full circle I found the building of the house, knowing what coming so nostalgic After it was complete I watched a video of the end of rdr1 comparing all the details that had changed. The graphics, the layout of the house. It was honestly the most heart reaching but beautiful part of the game. I also rushed it too much only taking a day, but not even venturing south. I wish there was more missions that made you want to go down there.

Of course every gameplay is unique in the sense that people feel different ways towards the story. For me, the beginning of the Epilogue was about healing. Losing Arthur the way we did after thinking "never in a game they would kill the protagonist" was heartbreaking. I needed some time away from shoot-outs, action packed gameplay and the gang's history altogether. Doing mundane things in the ranch only living day after day was the perfect recovery journey for me.
