One of the things I liked the most about doing a PhD was the environments it gave me access to. As part of your research, you get to debate your ideas with a lot of different people, many of them very passionate about what they do. You end up having a lot of insightful conversations that broaden your understanding not only of your field, but the whole world. You gain new "tools" to understand and deal with problems, and thinking about complicated things becomes a lot less daunting. I found the PhD environment to be a refreshing escape from the banality of everyday life. You can surely find these things outside of academia, but at least to my reality, these things were so much more far and between.

Professionally speaking, the publication of 1st article was an amazing reward. Personally, travelling all over the world and meeting so many cool people, friends for life now!

EUCARPIA Annual Conference in Angers, France, September 2003. I presented my PhD results and met the folk who ultimately led me to my current life and location here in the south of Spain.

If indeed you have been accused of speaking negatively about PhD, I respectfully disagree with those who hold such opinion. Rather, I think your present things mostly from first hand experience(s), what others will not tell you. It is this practical, realistic part of anything I like to hear and for which I am "inextricably connected" to this channel. I have even become an ambassador of some sort sending out any of your videos that speak to certain people. Let me use this opportunity to speak on an observation and also a request. In many, really many of your videos I have watched, you have not spoken about course work and PhD. Some people find it hard to juggle with research, especially for new PhD students. They are fired up to do research but course work somewhat gets in the way. This including writing papers based on the PhD student's own little expertise which they believe their PIs may benefit from given the "publish or perish" and "visible or vanish" mantras in academia and all the other things you have said about what academia is al about. The request is to do a video on "non-traditional" PhD students - people like 5 years older than you. In your video on how PhD has changed you, you stated that your analytic skills burgeoned. May be you want to analyze your KZbin channel to see the demographics (if KZbin provides such data) in your channel and provide content to the "non-traditional" aspiring or already enrolled PhD student. Looking forward to seeing such contents in the nearest future.

As a PhD student in his last year, I would say the best part is travelling and the small moments you live, specially in conferences. But "talking down" on PhD I think it is important because currently the research institutions are milking it just to benefit the institution itself while 90% of phd holders will NEVER work in academia, so yes, we best crap on that as soon as possible so we can change this as soon as possible.

The best part of doing a PhD? Standing over the laser printer and watching as the thesis emerges, page after page.

This is a good balanced view. However, sharing the downside of any big or small endeavour is important for prospective students to reflect on their motivations and purposes and challenges they will have to overcome. Thank you!

Can you do a video about “imposter syndrome?” I’m about to start my final year and at times, I don’t feel like I am where I should be. Regarding written coursework, I can more than hold my own. However, during discussions with other students, sometimes I feel out of place. Basically, the way I express myself in coursework is not how I speak in group settings. Thanks.

Who said that you are putting PhDs in a negative light. Reality is sometimes dark. What do these PhDs(academics) do just simply taking money (funding) for what publishing paper where a portion of that money goes to the money sucker publishers and the rest is gobbled up the academics from which they only give a tiny portion of the money to the graduate students and take 10 times the work from them. What you have said on this channel is true since I am myself a PhD Student and I have started to not find any meaning in it but still continue to do it in hopes that I can meet some people for interesting networking and collaborations. Rest there is nothing to academia just "Paper", "Paper" "funding", funding rest doesn't matter "progress in science" that's bullshit. I would say most of the real inventions are done by industry, entrepreneurs, and some research institutes or organization rest are just gaming the system. I am not saying that all academics are like this some are doing really interesting things with practical value but sadly they are very few.

Academia is not for everyone. The specific types of personalities can stay in academia you must be obedient and accept whatever senior researchers in your field are saying.
