Great video, really enjoyed it. The performance of the RYZEN chipset is really eye popping, especially when you factor in the savings over the Intel chips. Next build will be AMD chipset for sure.
@NelsonLim4 жыл бұрын
Oh yea, Lee! It's stunning what AMD is doing with the Threadrippers but what most people don't realise is that the Ryzen chips are really the game changer. They are really doing the consumer a great service but pushing 16 core and more into the Ryzen chips. Effectively cannabalising on their own Threadripper chips when these Ryzen chips do better then the equivalent TR chips at a lower cost and also it means you can buy cheaper mother boards and cheaper RAM. The savings go further than just on the chip itself.

Hi Nelson! 👋 I’m looking into a build suitable for animation/3D modelling, in programs like Maya and Blender. I noticed this video is from June 2020, is there any updates or changes you would consider making? For example, I keep being recommended the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X and 5950X. How do they compare to the 3950X? I found this video very informative, so thank you! A definite sub from me! 👍
@NelsonLim3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Artful Rogers. I haven't had a need upgrade to the 59XX series yet so I don't have numbers that I have tested. Nonetheless, they are good solid upgrades to the 39XX series. If my budget stays the same, I would go for them instead. And also the RTX 3070. However, if I wanted to save money and have a smaller budget. I still won't hesitate to get the 3950X and RTX 2070 for the right price. They will be more then sufficient for modelling in maya and blender. Although I understand that a PC is quite an investment, I'll almost always rather get what I can at a reasonable price and availability so I can start learning or selling as soon as possible. Upgrades can and will likely be made along the way.

Hi Nelson. Great video. Very useful! I'm brand new to CGI and want to build something capable. I've heard that the Intel chips now are faster than Ryzen when it comes to sculpting and viewport stuff due to their fewer but more powerful individual cores, whereas Ryzen wins at the final rendering times because of it's many more cores. Is that the case and, as a new person in this, should I still get a Ryzen over Intel's offerings for my PC build?

Hi Sam, as far as my experiences go. Most of the industry is on a PC with a couple of Macs for mostly concept artists who need photoshop. As far as the best computer for most CG artists goes, a PC running on Windows 10 is probably it.

@NelsonLim2 жыл бұрын
32 GB can still be plenty of RAM for VFX work. I wouldn't be too concerned about that RAM unless you were doing some seriously massive water simulations. Ultimately, laptops have various limitations in order not to overheat the GPU and CPUs in that tiny form factor. . So while they aren't ideal, I've still seen a lot of great VFX work come out of a laptop. If you are a video editor, then making sure that you have plenty of fast SSD storage is probably going to be more important.

I built the budget setup a couple of months ago. It does the job, but I get blue screen now and again and I think it's because of overheating cpu.
@NelsonLim3 жыл бұрын
Gevik, if your CPU is overheating, it will be good to make sure you download an app that tells you the CPU temps. If you followed all of the recommendations, it's unlikely to over heat, unless you have a faulty cooler, CPU or motherboard. In which case you want to contact the manufacturers to get them replaced or repaired.

I came across CG Geek video CPU comparison (Intel vs AMD) "kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZuVf2iLjKponNE" where he's using Blender. He is saying the complete opposite, the amount of cores matters only for rendering. Thanks Jozef for the comment. I do believe that when single core performance differences are pretty marginal (say within the 10% range), core count is more important in CG. Put simply, the trend in software development and CG over the last 10 years is taking advantage of multi-threaded computing. That’s why CPUs are increasing in cores. We have reached diminishing returns in investment on single core performance. Houdini, Maya, Nuke, AfterEffects, Premiere are just some of the many applications that make use of multi-core CPUs. Almost every simulation software is multi-threaded. I don’t use blender at the moment. So I can’t comment much about it. But I am aware that the blender devs are always discussing about where multi-threading can speed up performances. Over the last few years blender has been multi-threading parts of the software. I believe, cloth, mantaflow, FLIP fluids in blender are multi-threaded. That said, most CG artist also use more then one software for their workflow. And there is a high chance that we are using a software that benefits from multi-threading. As a CG artist I spend a lot of time simulating, rendering or doing progressive renders while lighting or look development. So rendering performance can affect my overall speed. Being a Houdini user also means that almost every piece of my software is optimized for multi-threaded computing. With the Ryzen 9 59xx series, AMD has surpassed intel in single core performance. Which basically means we get the best of both worlds. So it just made the choice easier. @@NelsonLim Thank you for such an extensive reply! Your answer says a lot about how passionate you are in what you do. I think I will have to wait a little bit with my purchase. Prices here in Australia to assemble an optimal CG PC are ridiculous. I had a long break from CG, originally a 3DSMAX guy, but Houdini and nodes were always intimidating. Lucky Blender is free and I can learn there since they have introduced nodes as well. Wish you all the best! Cheers!

Intro: let's make a pc that won't break your bank Picks the most expensive consumer parts
@NelsonLim4 жыл бұрын
You’re right. It isn’t a PC for most consumers. For consumers who don’t do a lot of computer graphics and rendering work, there are much cheaper options. The video was targeted at professional and aspiring CG practitioners. It’s PC that delivers amazing value for money specifically for CG practitioners in the VFX and Animation industry at about $2600. The budget pick is around $2000 and will work great for the money for modelers, animators, riggers and most junior to mid level lighting/comp and FX TDs.

@@NelsonLim Actually you are right Most professionals use components like titan rtx and for those purposes it is a really budget build

“What’s important is airflow” *recommends a case known for terrible airflow*

The NZXT H510 with it's negative pressure airflow does a good job at keeping temperatures of this particular setup in a good zone. Nonetheless, I do recommend the Fractal Design Meshify C as well for folks who would like a front mesh panel with even more airflow.

your prices are sooooo off it's comical

Yes, prices were when the video was made. During fairly reasonable times. Unfortunately, prices and availability changes all the time.
