Agreed, the only place I could put in some constructive criticism is the part about RAM. Speed, latencey, and capacity are equally as important. You don't see huge differences in when it comes to gaming, but when it comes to actual compute like rendering you start seeing real differences in the seconds. I don't know about anyone else, but if I can cut a render by 5-7 seconds a frame that's huge.

Overall a great introduction to workstation PCs. Just want to add that you should always go for dual-channel memory to not leave performance on the table, meaning instead of buying one 16GB stick of RAM buy two 8GB sticks in a kit (bundle) and install them according to your MBs manual (usually skipping one slot starting from the outside). Can make a big performance difference for memory bound tasks like I found out the hard way because I ran my two 16GB sticks in single channel for way too long until I found out 😅

"If you slap bottom of the barrel parts, you're gonna get bottom of the barrel results." I know what you're trying to say here but I would preface this with, you can get started with any computer out there and actually get just as good or same results, your final product just might take a little longer to finish. We don't want to give new artist the wrong impression, that the only way you can produce something good is by having the money to do so. I see to many beginner artist on forums that talk about how they would be such a better artist if they only had a RTX 3080 or if they could afford Octane.

The thing is, creativity wanes if you have a slower system. You spend too much time waiting and not enough time working. You lose ideas in pausing, waiting, pausing and waiting in the middle of processes and loads. It may be possible, but it is to the detriment of creativity.
@grantmalone
@grantmalone 2 жыл бұрын
@@4D1Characterror That's not universally true. Depends on the severity, the creative and the project. Many classic older CGI films were made on systems that were painfully slow by today's standards. Slower systems and limitations can actually aid creativity and results by forcing someone to think about what they are doing carefully versus following every random idea that pops into their head and working only by trial and error.
@jamesjason8471
@jamesjason8471 2 жыл бұрын
@@grantmalone I can guarantee you that no one, NO ONE from the era you are you are talking about would agree with you on that one. Slower system doesn't aid creativity, it creates frustration. Going through trial and error and figuring out new things is far far better than sitting for 1 hour to cook up an idea, implementing it and then sitting for another hour hoping that it works only to find out that it didn't. You just wasted 2 hours of your day.

Please be careful when speaking about quadro graphic cards. Quadros are not AT ALL made to support 3d applications but are actually designed for very, very specific purposes. For example, they are great to compute some very specific tasks where great precision is needed like in data science. Even if quadros have better specs in therm of vram, they are slower for rendering (have a look at benchmarks). Why ? Because the target market of these cards are mostly scientists. The reason why the price is so high is that quadros have some specific features like creating virtual compute servers or ECC vram which are totally useless if you're using the video card for rendering or realtime. By the way, the price of a quadro also contain a support service from nvidia that is not alt all designed for individuals. The "professional" label of these cards doesn't include 3d artists, filmmakers, and even less professional gamers (for example, cyberpunk is running at 70fps on a quadro A6000 versus 90fps on a 3080). It's really important to understand that for 3d related tasks, quadro cards are less performant than rtx30 series for a much higher price. And finally, quadros are not at all designed to be connected to a screen. A 3090 gives you 24gb of vram which is totally fine to work as a 3d artist. If you need more than 24gb as a freelance, you seriously should re-think your optimization methods. So please be carfeful before spending thousands dollars in something that you will probably use at 10%. Apart from that it's very nice of you sharing all of this kowledge, honestly it's really appreciated :)

Before I worked at Poliigon, I paid the bills building high end and mid range computers. The simplicity of this video is flawless. You've done a better job explaining the important and pertinent information for artists, than any major tech tuber out there. Great video. I also liked your analogies. Many tech tubers relate the parts to the human body, which can be misleading. Relating the parts to a work environment such as a kitchen makes a lot more sense. If I could add one thing, it would be to never listen to what the minimum or optimal spec of a software is. For example, blender says optimal ram capacity is 16gb. I think, for some cases, that is true. But if you want to render large scenes, or do simulations, you'll have a much better time with more ram. It's also important to note, that when you do run out of system ram, your system will fall back on its boot storage to provide the data. That is why it is a great investment to go for a high speed NVME drive over a hard disk or sata sad. And lastly, I loved the toilet paper analogy. If I may take it a step further, I'd say it's more like clogging a toilet on your first date at someone's house and you can't find a plunger. That puppy won't flush cause there's too much dookie. Then you have to spend an awkward amount of time simplifying your deuce so it'll flush. Not a fun time. Manage your texture sizes and geometry resolution, and you'll have a much better time.

I usually take the minimum and recommend specs as more of: Min spec: the minimum you’ll need for it to run. You’ll probably have a bad time running it on any less than this. Recommended: the minimum you’ll need for typical/casual use to run smoothly.

The only thing that I would say is about the Ram the Frequency the ram as well as the timings can be important in some instances not all and also higher speed ram and tighter timings are.....you guessed it more money. This is a good guide for someone new getting into computers and especially if they are getting into it because they are trying to get into vfx because different workloads for a computer might need different specs but this seems tailored for vfx. I haven't even tried to do any vfx btw I just know PC's fairly well.

Very slightly misleading regarding CPU - clockspeeds nowadays are pretty irrelevant. It's all about the IPC (instructions per clock). A CPU with lower clockspeed could outperform a similar (often older) with higher MHz.

Technically you wouldn’t get bottom of the barrel results with a mid level PC vs high end PC technology has really narrowed the gap between processing power in relation to cost the speed just won’t be efficient enough for professional work. Slightly disappointed you don't cover the advantages and disadvantages of AMD vs Intel for CPUs and AMD versus Nvidia for GPUs. So many people buy AMD video cards still. Until AMD get their act together regarding drivers and supporting 3D software it's just money down the drain. Stick with Nvidia. People should also keep one eye on future-proofing and upgradability. Don't cheap out on the bare minimum for the less than sexy parts like motherboard and PSU. Buy ones that allow you to upgrade your CPU and other hardware in the future without having to buy a whole new motherboard.

I do feel like memory size is exaggerated these days. Sure, the more the better, but it should not harm the budget for other components either. My rig is getting a bit old, I will have to wait until prices become acceptable again, but I don't think I have ever ran out of memory with 16 + 8 GB VRAM. In my experience, GPU and CPU (as well as cooling!!) become a bottleneck long before that, for 3D, for gaming, or otherwise.

I think it discourages people who can't afford better parts. I've had that experience with music making. My gear sucked dude! All the tutorial videos on yt would say is that I need this soundcard or that expensive guitar. So I would always blame my laziness on the fact that my gear sucked. But then I found this "Simon The Magpie" channel and the guy was making nice music deliberately using reeeally bad gear. Important note on RAM: when you open any file, what IO Controller does, is it puts pieces of that file in your Ram so that CPU can actually see the data, when you have "too much" RAM these file pieces stay in RAM and don't get overwritten after they have been read, meaning if you were to open the same file again (after closing it without modification), you will not need to read it from the disc, as it will "already be" in the RAM. Example: I have a 20 GB game, that takes 4 GB of ram at a time, the first load takes me 2 minutes, but because I have 32 GB in my system, the next time I open the strategic view it takes seconds, as the files with data for the strategic map are accessed from RAM and not my Superslow HDD. Bottom line: extra RAM increases the speed of opening files for the second time

This is one of the worst times to be buying PC parts I can remember. Stuff is way more expensive than it should be. Good high level breakdown of enthusiast PC parts. Coincidentally, a lot of the stuff that is good at gaming is also good at doing 3D. Of course there are specialized parts for a dedicated workstation, but a good gaming machine will make a decent 3D workstation. You get into CPU threads and clock speed and I want to chime in like "yea but don't forget IPC!!! There's more to it than just clock speed!" but then I remembered this is a high level overview. Don't go bargain bin on your power supply. And keep an eye on temperatures during renders. Renders hammer the hell out of the system and it will get hot. Make sure it's not going to the point where it thermal throttles.

I know desktop is absolute essential in an artist's toolkit, but I would also love to know if you use a laptop, for "those" travelling days, mac or windows laptop, how you configure it, just graphics rendering or gaming as well ?...something on those grounds ?!? You can also showcase more in future on 3 different budget systems to get started and make this a series once every year...like cheap, in-the-middle and absolute number crunching beast systems, now that you have access to Pueget professionals.

Great video and super usefull especially if you are a begginer in the world of computer building for 3d artists. One thing i would maybe say differently, i dont think that the graphics card is the most important part of the pc, i would agree with that statment regarding only GPU based renderings. Still a great big deal of 3d artists work with CPU, if i had to guess i would say still more than 50%. For everyone using CPU that is actually the most important part of the machine, that and RAM.

i am more off Gamedev Mysel than 3d artist and has been into PC Building for some time,but or the "some time" i litterally now knows what The Core,Threads and Clock Speed Funtions(in my daily knowledge i rather make Core and Threads under same boats) now since this tutorials i think i get the gist of my next upgrade especially i will need to do some more multitasking and Virtualization thing a.k.a VM-Ception,as for Reability yeah its concern me a lot between Rebility Vs Upgradibility/Future Proofing,well i think ill stick to DDD4 Maxed out rather than Mid DDR5 Specs then in the next year

What are thoughts on the new M1 Pro/Max MacBook Pros for digital art? I’m at a crossroad right now whether to build a PC or buy an M1 Pro MacBook Pro and at the moment I’m leaning more towards the Mac as a main workstation because of it’s practicality and efficiency but I’d love to hear your opinion!

You can do this sure and get a great Desktop OR you can be like me and get a high end leptop and have very easy workstation that I can plug out and take places(if I ever would like to do that)As a plus you get a 2nd monitor It's definitely not for everyone but I just like to have the portability personally and there are some really good laptops these days I'm currently on a very respectable i7-7700hq machine with a 1060 and 16 gigs of ram(respectable by 2017-18 standards but ehhhhhhhhhhhh) but would be upgrading to a legion 5 pro in something like 6-8 months when I have enough saved up(it's also probably enough time for maybe better parts to be available in my marketplace so there's that too I most definitely could just get a pc that outperforms the laptop for similar/cheaper price but I just like laptops its a preference thing

Sadly you can not use clock speed, cores and threads to judge how fast your cpu is. as what Linus said about looking at cpu speed is like judging how fast car is just by looking at the rev counter. if you do this you could be overpaying for a cpu or be disappointed of how little performance improvement the new cpu is. different microarchitecture will have a big effect on performance and each one may be better for different applications and programs. you can how two cpus with the same core, clock and thread but if one cpu microarchitecture bad it will perform poorly. also some applications prefer more cores like rendering or and some applications prefer fewer faster cores like games to perform faster. If your are going to buy a cpu you have to look at reviews on what how well the cpu performs on your application. that is why real world performance is so important. also you may need to look a other features your cpu may need to support. how much ram does you cpu support. How much power you cpu is consuming. overclocking support and many other things As i said buying a cpu is not that simple as just looking a few numbers . Finding the right cpu is more complicated and about finding the best performance with a price you can afford. Linus did a techquickie about how to buy a cpu.

I have 16 gb of ram and blender crashes every day, get 64 or 128 gigs it’s worth every penny even if it’s an extra few thousand dollars, it will change your life, just don’t order Uber eats for a month and you can afford it.

Apple does not want their base to see this video. They make incomprehensible amounts of money off the ignorance people have off something as simple as storage memory versus ram.

i smile when i see your power supply of 1000 watts. i made that mistake too so i doubt that you actually need it or use all energy pulled from your power supply. Probably 750 watt is enough for your 3d work with one gpu card. the good is the electricity bill is now less nearly 30- 38% for me.

How the cgi artists get such an amazing quality up close or just in general how to get more quality without putting some 16k textures onto a model!
