I have found one thing that makes any pencil sharpener last longer; you need to use a regular graphite pencil every 5-6 colored pencils you sharpen. That is because colored pencil lead is much stickier than graphite and sticks to the blades, making them dull faster. If you occasionally use a graphite pencil, because the graphite is much smoother, it tends to lubricate the blade and remove any colored pencil residue off of the blade. I have had many sharpeners last much longer just by using this trick. It really helps. I first heard about this tip when I was in school and was using electric sharpeners. The teachers always made us use graphite ones after sharpening colored pencils. This also works for manual sharpeners. There are several that I like. I like the TGaal, all Kum sharpeners, the Staedtler two hole sharpener, and the Faber-Castell sharpeners.

First, the proper way to sharpen Prismacolors (or any other pencil you have that has obvious breakage throughout the pencil from dropping or whatever) is to use an X-acto knife to whittle a sharpened point. It takes practice to learn, but totally worth it to get the most out of your pencils. Buy a cheap set, like from the dollar tree, to teach yourself to whittle them properly/efficiently. Like you said, Prismacolor pencils have a very soft lead and just through the shipping process they can be damaged. Sharpening those with an X-acto knife was highly recommended to me throughout my years majoring in art. You can use a sandpaper sharpening pad to get an ultra fine point with this method. Second, I don't know where this idea of turning the sharpener rather than the pencil started; but that's totally not a good idea, especially with those big, bulky handheld sharpeners. The more movement you have in either the handheld sharpener or the pencil, the more breakage you will have. The idea with those is a steady, even movement to prevent breaking the lead. Third, if the blade gets dull, the lead will continuously break. The blades on ALL of those cheap pencil sharpeners, even the Kum steel one (also my favorite), will dull quickly. You can tell they're dull *when* the lead starts breaking often or the wood looks choppy. Also, if the pencil is warped even in the slightest, the lead will continuously break.

I use the tgaal, I heard you should every once in awhile sharpen a really hard leaded graphite pencil to keep the blade more sharp. I've never had an issue with it, and I actually turn the pencil because it's awkward for me to turn the sharpener. I feel I have better control which means less stress on the pencil. Also your lead looked odd because you sharpened on 2 different settings.
@towalmoore4 жыл бұрын
I have gone through a ton of sharpeners trying to fine one I like. I actually like the little plastic ones that cost less than $5 for 24 of them. They have done fine on all the different pencil types I have. A little hint that makes it easier to sharpen them IMO is to hold the pencil in your left hand and the sharpener in your right hand. It's a lot easier since you are used to turning with your right hand. I found holding them the normal way and twisting with my left hand I was still putting pressure on the pencil. I just got a T-gaal after years of hearing people rave about them. It's ok, but nothing to write home about. I do like the Prismacolor Scholar sharpener. I take it with me because it holds the shavings (not that I go anywhere anymore).

Sharpener in the dominant hand, pencil in your weaker hand then turn the sharpener 🙂 I find if the T'GAAL isn't working properly it's often got wax build up on the blade. If you run a graphite pencil through a sharpener every now and again, it helps keep the blade clean/sharp. My personal favourite sharpener is a helical bladed crank handle desk sharpener by Helix or the M&R brass double hand held sharpener. Great video with good pros and cons.

The patel caran dache break way too easily and they are NOT CHEAP. The FC pitt pastel work the best in a sharpener. In the end, I've decided sharpeners are just the nemesis of pencils artist. Ik this is an old video... However, the TGAAL sharpeners are great, but they are also sealed so you're not able to change the blade like you are able to on a KUM. Tgaal are a good pocket pencil sharpener to carry when on the go, they're inexpensive and light. They need to be replaced regularly depending on how much you use them. Ultimately, you're better off investing in a cylindrical style sharpener for your home as replacing the Tgaal 3 or 4x per year would add up to about the same. Tldr: TGAAL are great for carrying to use irregularly but replaced regularly. Cylindrical style sharpeners are a better investment in the long term.

We need to leave behind flat blade sharpeners altogether, bc they're always hacking against the wood grain. Helical blades are far better, bc they follow the round shape of your pencil. Some are hand crank & some are electric. These are better for your wrists anyway, since turning your wrist to constantly hand sharpen the constant whittling of a soft-core pencil, is going to tax your tendons & joints over time. Plus, crank & electric have an auto-stop function to prevent over-sharpening as soon as the pencil has a pointy tip.

Why would you rotate it like that? Yes, you're supposed to turn it around the pencil, but you're not supposed to hold it like that. It gives you zero control, no stability, and you're not going to get enough pressure for a smooth cut from the blade and its going to catch and tear at the pencil. You should always be holding it in a firm grip with your palm towards the end of the sharpener, apply light pressure, and rotate with your wrist, not your finger tips in this strange awkward finger dance motion.
