The last Olympian was beautiful… an incredible ending and perfect build up
@johnweaver3119 ай бұрын
TLO was gilded and ultimately shows Percy's naiveté. He really thought that making the Olympians swear an oath on the Styx was going to change anything, despite how he, Thalia, and Jason were born in violation of such an oath. The gods don't care about Styxian oaths because they're completely unaffected by them in the first place.

@Aether-wd6wn9 ай бұрын
@@johnweaver311 “the duty of a hero is to sacrifice their wants for the betterment of others” You do realize this is exactly what Percy did and if he accepted immortality he would be going against this right? Percy was tempted to accept the offer, the idea of being immortal and high-status was very enticing. However, he rejected BECAUSE OF OTHERS, i.e. his family, friends and mainly Annabeth. He gave up the greatest gift of all to still be with them. And this WAS for the better, as the gods are forbidden to majorly interfere with mortal affairs, so Percy can help his friends and be there for them WAY WAY more than if he became a god. And we all know how very-much needed he was in HOO and TOA. And how is him making Annabeth immortal after the fact even remotely a good idea?? Percy is a very selfless character (as i established above) so him just making Annabeth immortal exclusively and leave everyone else behind is a jerk move, and frankly i highly doubt Annabeth would want this either given she had already rejected eternal life when she was offered to be a Hunter. And lets not forget the olympians only consented to making Percy a minor god at best, and as we learned in TOA, when an immortal bestows godhood onto another, they lose some of their own power, so the person being granted godliness will be even less powerful or just barely count as an immortal (or perhaps it wouldnt even work period), so theres no guarantee that Percy could effectively do that.
@johnweaver3119 ай бұрын
@@Aether-wd6wn Wrong on all points. Percy is just as selfish and self-centered as his mother. Sally knew he was a demigod, knew he needed training, but instead she kept him with her, putting him and herself through constant danger and unnecessary strife. Sally did this because she wanted her baby boy. She neglected what was needed in favor of her own personal wants. Percy neglected godhood because he was a foolish child. He really thought the gods would actually honor a Styxian oath despite how he and Thalia are literally alive in spite of a Styxian oath. As we see in HoO, ToA, and even in Chalice, the gods (big shocker) did not honor their oath. Therefore, effectively, Bianca, Zoe, Beckendorf, Silena, Ethan, and all the other children that died in the Titan War died for nothing. It is not clear to what level of god Percy would've been. "Minor" is just a designation given to any deity that isn't one of the twelve Olympians or Hades. Hecate, Triton, and Persephone are all "minor" gods, but we know that the three of are hardly minor in any way. So, though Percy would've been a minor god, he would not have been one so weak as that childhood drink goddess that likes to manifest as the Kool-Aid Man. Further, Annabeth rejected the Hunters, not being immortal. Her life's dream is to be the greatest architect in the world, with cities and monuments constructed in her image. It's her ambition to make something that lasts forever, a desire that stems from her trauma of Luke and Thalia. As she is no fool, the only way to make something last forever is to maintain it forever. She would need to be immortal. On a side note, consider this: what is the difference between being immortal in Elysium versus being immortal in the living world? Finally, it is ironic that you bring up Percy being there for his friends, and how much he was needed in ToA, because Percy made the conscious and deliberate decision to *not* help his friends during the Imperial War. He showed up to help with the Colossus Neronis, and that was it. He didn't do anything to help with the communication problem, he didn't start watching over CHB, nor did he tell Sally and Paul about what was going on, and as soon as he graduated, he, Annabeth and Grover hit the road...despite how Grover knew that Jason was dead and that a huge invasion army had been marching on Camp Jupiter, and despite how Percy and Annabeth both knew that Nero's base was located in Manhattan, information that was gleaned and shared by Rachel. So, Percy knew there was a war going on and he didn't help. He knew there was an evil god practically down the street from where he lived, yet he still left the city. He did nothing to defend CHB, and nothing to defend his family. He left everyone's life up to chance because he was only concerned with himself. He was in so much of a hurry to leave that he left his infant baby sister completely undefended and unprotected.

Garbage book. Piper and Leo shit on Jason's memory by not at least attending his funeral, and even more so by not being there to defend his home. The worst stab is when Piper and Leo don't rejoin with Frank, Hazel, and Reyna to help them stand against the emperors and Tarquin. The final nail in the coffin is when Reyna abandons her people to go frolicking through the trees with the Hunters.
@annagiambona52119 ай бұрын
@@johnweaver311 I agree with you on the first part, because I also think that Leo and Piper absolutely should have gone to his funeral. But it is still an awesome book and one of the most underrated that Rick has written. And I LOVED Frank's character development in this book, it was just so good. Also Apollo, Reyna and Hazel were AMAZING in this.
@johnweaver3119 ай бұрын
@@annagiambona5211 Frank didn't have any character development. He had character undevelopment. His idea of duty and honor was to recklessly throw himself at the enemy, completely disregarding his responsibilities as praetor and as Hazel's boyfriend, heedless of the repercussions his death would have for the legion and his girlfriend. Even Apollo notes how foolish Frank was being. The firewood was twofold, with the first part being how giving said firewood to Hazel was a huge sign of his faith, trust, and confidence in her, and then he was just like, "Nah," and the second part being how that specifically written to be his life line, only for Rick to just go, "Nah," after hyping that up for four books straight. And then he didn't even give a logical explanation as to why Frank somehow broke free of his fate. Apollo was certainly better than he was in the previous three books, Hazel was certainly the star of the book, being the only character still in line with how she was written in HoO, but Reyna? Reyna was given nothing but mistreatment the whole book. First, she reveals to Piper that she had received a cryptic message from Venus about how no demigod would ever heal her heart, leading the fandom to go wild with pairings, most leaning towards Reyna being gay on the technicality between demigods and demigoddesses, and then a new swing towards her and Apollo. Only it is later revealed that Venus was not actually delivering prophecy to Reyna, but was actually just setting her up to be the punchline in a boomerang joke that the goddess had been setting up for hundreds of years just to humiliate Apollo by way of getting epically rejected. Second, at the climax of the book, instead of being able to stand with her people at least once more in their darkest hour, she is instead kicked to the sideline by Rick via a broken foot that is somehow not instantly healed despite this being a world full of magic. The children of Apollo back at CHB are laughing because they can fully reattach limbs. Utter disrespect by Rick towards Reyna. Thirdly, and finally, Reyna's decision to join the Hunt. At this point in time, the legion and the citizenry are in shambles, with the camp and the city in various states of ruin. Apollo notes that the sum total of the population was able to fit inside the senate building, and Percy notes in SoN how the building was no bigger than a high school lecture hall, meaning barely a hundred people are expected to squeeze in there. In fact, someone once crunched the numbers, and they estimated that approximately 100 people were still alive at the high end, and barely 30 at the lowest. I'll link that if you would like to read it. So, with so many people dead, with the war not over, with the legion in its most vulnerable state thus far, Reyna looks around at all this death, devastation, and uncertainty (whatever Nero's planning, any other unknown threats lurking in the shadows, and routine monster attacks), she somehow decides that **now** is the time to leave the legion. I don't think so. At the least, she may step down from being praetor, but she still wouldn't just abandon the legion at this point. She would only leave once the legion and city were 100% secure and the war was over.
@annagiambona52119 ай бұрын
@@johnweaver311 Everyone has their own opinion and indeed I respect yours. Thank you also for explaining all the stuff in details. I still don't agree on the Frank part but I agree that Hazel is the star. I don't agree also with the Reyna part, but I get your point and respect your opinion.

Will did nothing more than whine about the Underworld and Tartarus, the entire Nyx fight was bogus because there's no way a Primordial goddess of night, in the darkness of Tartarus, is going to lose to a Titan and a couple of demigods, even if her own brats get in the way, and the story was full of continuity errors. The book claims it was Hypnos that put Manhattan to sleep, but it was actually Morpheus, and somehow Bianca is there at the end despite how Nico says she chose rebirth all the way back in SoN. Then the whole thing with the cacodemons made zero sense, and the final scene with Piper is contradictory. On one page she was gay the whole time, and then on another page she might be gay she might not. I love how it makes the Canes and Percy and Annabeth interact with each other, not to mention how Percy gets to show off and shock them (besides Annabeth) in the final bit of the third story. The Titan’s Curse shares the bottom spot with The Hidden Oracle for me, both have the issue that I can’t stand the main character in that book (Percy just feels somewhat self absorbed in it, and Apollo is not an appealing main character in the first being, at least to me). It was an alright book but too many little inconsistencies and mistakes, like Nico accidentally calling Bianca his mother or calling Hecate a demon when she was a Titan.

I agree with most of this except the trials of apollo hate!! (i’m only on book 3) but here’s my rankings im not entirely done with the series yet so instead of did not read i’m having it as yet to read because I will read them : - tyrants tomb - tower of nero - demigod diaries - chalice of the gods - the sun and the star which knocks out spaces 18-14, so my list is 13th - 1st 13th - The hidden oracle, sorry not sorry it was a little boring and not a lot happened but still good 12th - The dark prophecy, the plot was cute w. the way station but the ending for me in regards to leo is just not him yk 11th - the son of neptune, hot take the worst book in heroes of olympus, I loved frank and hazel as the series went on but wasn’t feeling them this book… 10th - the lightning thief, a classic, not the best not the worst (I still love this book) 9th - sea of monsters, brings in cutie pie tyson but ultimately better than TLT solely due to the siren scene. 8th - the lost hero, pains me to put to high up, I love this book but the top 7 are better 7th - the burning maze, jason my precious sweet child😭 also megs backstory made me so sad. Haven’t finished yet (50pgs to go) so hoping end isn’t too bad 6th - battle of the labyrinth, I didn’t think it would be so far from the top 3, when reading it was really good, only issue is how rick kind of made every woman he talked to fall in love with him😢 5th - blood of olympus, would’ve been so much closer to top 3 if the ending wasn’t so rushed! 4th - the last olympian, such a beautiful end to the first series, but slightly bested by others 3rd - mark of athena, the reunion, the cliffhanger it had it all, loved the whole crew together 2nd - house of hades, percybeth trauma was too good and put it slightly above mark of athena 1st - the titans curse, first book I’ve ever read in a day (at the big age of 17) couldn’t put it down was too good, first time the series showed itself to be not afraid to kill off a lot of characters, first book where it got deep and dark so deffo top for me

I completely agree with the number one spot. Last Olympian is the best in the series, it gives a very nice conclusion to the PJO series and ties everything up very well. SPOILER, Beckendorf's death was really sad though. But still I love the battle of Manhattan, one of my favorite parts of the book. And percy getting the curse of achilles was really cool and an awesome way to protect percy from danger but still have a weak spot to kinda tease us and make us think that maybe there is a chance that he could die. Anyway Last Olympian is the best book in the series for countless reasons.

Some people just don't appreciate art, I suppose 🤷 The message of Change, that you can ALWAYS change is SO GOOD. There is literally so many great things in ToA
@johnweaver3119 ай бұрын
@@FireAlder2005 Change is not synonymous with good. People and things do not always, in fact rarely ever, change for the better. There are no good things about ToA. Percy and Annabeth abandoned CHB, and Sally, Paul, and Estelle in the middle of a war with an evil god living in the very same neighborhood, and didn’t even bother to tell them. Grover lied to their faces the entire road trip, never telling them about Jason or the attack on New Rome. Piper broke up with Jason for reasons that don’t even make sense, and then Jason was killed in a way that makes even less sense. Leo and Piper both disrespect Jason and their friendship with him by A) not escorting his body and attending his funeral, and B) not rejoining Reyna, Frank, and Hazel to defend New Rome. Frank’s firewood is gone and he should be dead, but he isn’t, this rendering that entire subplot from HoO null, void, and pointless. Reyna likewise is OOC. In the middle of a war, following a Pyrrhic victory in which New Rome was almost wiped out, with little survivors from the legion and citizenry, with no one knowing what Nero could be planning, what other threats may be out there, or just simple monster attacks, Reyna decides that this super critical time in which New Rome is at its most vulnerable is the perfect time to abandon her people and run off with the Hunters. Meg is an unlikeable, rude, pompous Mary Sue. Apollo is an idiot who will be back to his old ways before the century is over. These events will stick with him for a while, but with the passage of time, he will...change...once more. ToA is nothing more than one bad decision after another, and it has left the legacy of PJO and HoO in shambles.

Personally I think ToA went so low not because people didn't like Percy not being the hero, but simply because when you think of the question "best Percy Jackson book" you think which book actually showcases the son of Poseidon at his core. And you can't really see that when the book...isn't about him.
@Buck95568 ай бұрын
IMO, Son of Neptune is awesome and #1. I think it’s because it centered around Percy but I love both Hazel and Frank. The part where they fought the giant was awesome and hilarious. 2nd is Mark of Athena. Almost the same reason as Son of Neptune but I love the part where Annabeth and that Spider woman creature. 3rd is house of hades. I like how the explored more of Tartarus and more centered around Hazel. Tied for 4th is tied between the first and last books. It was hard to follow and kinda boring. For PJO 1st: Battle of the labyrinth (so much action, loved the scene with Rachel and Kronos, plus a bunch of great characters) 2nd: Last Olympian (read so much of it on the toilet with my 5 hours long diarrhea also made me feel so excited relieved sad and a bunch of emotions) 3rd: Titans curse 4th: Chalice of the gods 5th: Sea of Monsters 6th: Lightning thief (it was hard to read after rereading since it was just too bland and boring)

I'm still reading throught MoA and took some peeks in the next books of HoO (can't help it, don't blame me), and it's been one or two years since I've last read PJO I have to say, my favourite out of the books I've read is The Last Olympian, because the thing was so intense, and it was so damn (dam?) cool- It's like, amazing, and Idk how to describe it well, but everything felt like it was so big. The danger were real and it was amazing, just as simple as that. It was emotional. And my least favourite, from those I've read, is The Lost Hero. Not because of lack of Percy (ofcourseIwantedtoseehimbutlike-), but because Jason and Piper were so blank- I couldn't connect with them, only with Leo, that carried the whole book on his back (and turned one of my favourites easily w this..,). The whole 'omg omg I wanna get my boyfriend back but omg he never was my boyfriend and I think he loves another girl help help' from Piper were very tiring to read, ngl like, I'm not a big shipper myself, but I can actually feel the sweetness of Percabeth while, idk what's the name for their ship, but, Piper × Jason felt forced, at least for me. But this is just my opinion, so..
@-._.-What-Is-Up-._.-9 ай бұрын
That is normal for any reader who read TLH bcz Piper is really not Jason type, She is lesbian but Hera got her wrong and Make Piper fell in love with Jason (Piper had a Crush on Annabeth for whole HoO Series) That is why Piper broke up Jason (or cheat on Shell ) in Third TOA book which make Piper, one of my most hated Character

Pjo: the titans curse Hoo: tied between tson and moa Toa: hard to decide since ive only read them twice, less than any of the others here, but either the burning maze or the hidden oracle. Maybe tower of nero? I dunno The kane chronicles: the serpents shadow Magnus chase: the hammer of thor My favorite series is either pjo or the kane chronicles Sort of unrelated. This morning, my teacher was going over some stuff about ancient egypt, and he asked us for some gods that we know, and i immediately wanted to list out all of them. Eventually he was like "i know you know, lets give someone else a chance" but very few other people knew any, so he just let me list out all the ones i knew. From the main series, TLO. by far the best, from Heroes Of Olympus, MOA, HOH, and BOO. most people don't like blood of Olympus, and I didn't either, until I reread it. I had such a renewed appreciation for Nico Di Angelo and Reyna in that book, and the chapters were life-changing for me. But whilst that said, none of those books had an impact on me like Trials of Apollo. I entered the series sceptic, about the new characters, but I instantly fell in love. Lester Padadopolus is the first character we read of that has lived a long life. We start off laughing at his blatant narcissism, but then we find ourselves connecting to his sadder moments, unrequited love, acceptance in Olympus, broken family relationships. I also loved the fact it wasn't romance. Yes, I love all of the PJO couples with my whole heart, but found family is so special to me, especially for someone like Apollo. He had so many failed relationships, and I often found myself tearing up over his poetic grievances with his ex lover, Commodus, or Daphne, or Hyacinthus. I left a piece of myself behind once I had finished Trials of Apollo. He isn't magically good after, but he is someone who is trying to be. He goes from hating on a human lifestyle, to feeling as if he was lucky to experience one, even for a short time. The pacing was amazing and easy to follow, the heartbreak was well placed, the humor in his text was well written, and his character development was so rewarding to watch. I was never bored whilst reading these books, they suited each other so well, the plot was great and the premise was wonderful. It makes me heartbroken that people consider it non-canon, or refuse to read it, just because it takes on a mature tone. It was such a good addition, and I wish it received more love.

There is flaws in every book series, and its sad to see that you disagree but everyone interprets books differently. I liked the addition from another perspective, and I am a huge fan of character development based plotlines, so TOA worked for me. Maybe not for you. Also, it is fantasy. I can let a couple things slide, like franks firewood the main thing he struggled with was confidence, so if a plot hole was made with the wood- but also let his character shine through, it wont bother me that much. but that also had absolutely nothing to do with my previous comment, where I explicitly said the reasons why I did like it. TOA had the longest lasting impression on me, and you don't have to agree, but I thought it was great. @@antipro4483

My favorite is Battle of the Labyrinth cuz that's when we see Percy really coming into his own: learning that the power of the sea is within him even when he's not near water, exploding the volcano, him recognizing his feelings for Annabeth. From the time they enter Mt St Helen's to Annabeth storming off after the funeral is my favorite "sequence" in the entire series, so much cool stuff happens all in a row! Rachel coming back was top notch. How "lose a friend to worse than death" came true hits me hard every time and it may have been the moment that made me realize "worse than death" is my biggest fear. Sea of Monsters was a filler book: it provides necessary backstories, character introductions, character development for Clarisse, and more world building, but the actual plot seems to be there to fill in the spaces between all that. I relate to Annabeth in many ways throughout the series, including her dislike for Tyson, and this book gives him more focus than other books. Still love the book, but it's definitely my least favorite in the 1st series.

never thought to rank each book separately but i think PJO still slaps as a series. there is no truly weak instalment, best series overall. HoO ends on a bit of an underwhelming note unfortunately (and has some other issues imo regarding stakes etc) and while i love the switch up in ToA w Apollo as a protagonist (as an adult i actually think i like his arc better than Percy's now) the series has issues with inconsistent characterization for almost everyone who isn't a newly introduced character and that brings it down a lot in my eyes. haven't read the other 2 series or Chalice of the Gods for that matter. i love Percy & Annabeth but their story feels completed & the premise sounds so dumb i'm sure there are other more interesting things/character left to explore
