The Best pH For Plants - Garden Quickie Episode 79

pH Is Very Important For Our Plants. As a measure of our soil's acidity or alkalinity, a pH reading let's us know if we have to take action. Outside of acid-loving plants like Blueberries and Azaleas, most of our garden crops want a fairly neutral pH.
In today's Garden Quickie, let's dive into the world of pH and discover just how important this soil parameter really is.

Question, doesn't it take weeks to months for the amendments to work through the soil, to correct a PH level?

It's all heat and moisture and metabolic rate controlled... So sometimes slower, sometimes faster. Ultra fast pH correction can be deadly as well... It's rather it be gradual than over night!

I find the Holland ph tester is the same through our my soil . Its about 7 but I don't see the needle move at all .is there a way to test the pH tester 🤔 Likel sticking it in an orange lol

Actually, I did that.....but with a lemon! It read just above 2....which is fairly accurate!

So what in a Normal environment changes your soils ph in the first place ,either acidly or alkaline

Fertilizers, microorganisms, certain mulches/composts, erosion, loss of neutralizing minerals...etc etc.....LOTS of things can affect pH. 🙂

I have a similar meter and I can't believe people actually plug them in water just to measure and then give it a poor rating when it doesn't register - smdh.

I am a soil scientist. I can tell you without uncertainty that a non powered, resistance multimeter is worthless for pH assessment. In fact, if you rely on the results you could harm your soil. Just get a sample box from your county cooperative extension office and test your soil correctly. Cheap and easy.
