The Best Pizza Slices near Penn Station, NYC

I visited Pizzeria Suprema, the oldest pizza shop near Penn station and still one of the best in the city. Then I visited Upside pizza, a relatively new (3-4 years) pizzeria a little north of Penn station.
If I was going to send a visitor arriving in Penn station to just one, I’d say hit suprema as it’s one of the classic NY slice joints you should know. But Upside also has something to offer with a really unique and delicious take on a Sicilian/Detroit slice.

I love Pizzeria Suprema and go there every time I come into the city so i'm glad to see this shout out (especailly the Upside Down slice), Kenji. I have spoken to them about their sauce and they say they use a lot of onions to make it that sweet.

Pizza suprema is the first proper slice shop slice i had as a kid taking the train into nyc. Haven’t thought about that place in forever since I try and avoid that area of manhattan like the plague now but thanks for the memory, I think I’ll stop by now next time I’m passing by

I came to this thread to say you should try Updside then I saw you went there. That square slice at Upside is a delight. They use a sourdough starter which may be part of the interesting texture. I think it gives the crust a great chew and flavor on the reqular slices too. I normally go for one of the sausage and pickled peppers , and one pepperoni square there. I agree on the cheese, but the toppings on the sasuage peppers mollify me. One of my favorite meals when I worked in the fashion district. Hey, If you are still in midtown, tryout Tengri Tagh which is a super legit Uighur spot. Get those lamb hand pulled noodles.

Whats your opinion on pizza al taglio? Pizza by weight cut in squares. I had it at a place in florence called Gustarium. They use pre baked thick full grain bread creatively topped with pickled veg, deli meats etc. and baked with mozzarella. Technically closer to a melt sandwich but very delicious.

When I was in high school I worked at a guitar school on 30th between 7th and 8th and all of the teachers and staff would go to Pizza Suprema at least once a week and it was (and still is) my favorite slice in the city! Loved seeing you hype it and I guess I should also check out Upside!

30 years in NYC. Hit Lombardi's pizza. If you're in that area you gotta visit Katz's. It's an experience and the corned beef or pastrami on rye is still just the best. Ramen? Momofuko East Village or Minca on 5th A/B. Sushi? Rosella on A 8/9th st. (bring your wallet). Mind blowing vegan at Ladybird 7th A/B then head to Death & Co on 6th A/B for drinks (if you can get in). David's Bagels on 1st Ave 15/16.

You gotta give Bravo on 30/7 - block South of Penn some love. It is the quintessential NYC-style-slice-that-is-near-penn-station. Is it the best "Ray's" style NYC slice? No. But that pizza shop (not sure if same owners) has been on that corner since the 90s when all the rehearsal studios were on 29th and 30th St. and it's the same overpriced slice it has always been. The sweetness of Suprema is not my jam, although I understand the appeal.

I work in the area. Pizza Suprema is pretty much the only place to get a decent slice. I recommend a standard Sicilian slice from there. Good balance of cheese dough sauce.

Pesto slice at Don Pepi!! It's actually in Penn Station! Also Lions, Tigers and Squares, which is Detroit style and like, 10 blocks south of Penn 🤷‍♂️.

You MUST try Don Pepi which is actually inside Penn Station. It is near the Amtrak waiting area close to Krispy Kreme. There is also a deli by the same name. Avoid that place. You want the PIZZA place. Really really good!
