I am always learning something, more or less, from Gavin. But I always turn out to be in a happier mode when ending, than when starting. Such a positive attitude. Thanks, Gavin!

I liked this video. Good results. Being picky, light travels in a straight line, if a mirror, lens, water is not in the way. It can’t wrap. I’ve tried very hard to desensitize myself, but continue to fail. But I’m sure not going to stop watching your videos.

It's got me buggered why people click thumbs down on this sort of content. What did you expect? That he'd tell you your portraits would suddenly look professional if you placed your softbox 3.7 feet from the subject and 27.93 inches forward of center? He have you the correct answer; experiment.

Hi Gavin. Your videos is fun to watch and you learn a lot. If you have a larger room would you still have the box that close? I have a really big softbox 120x 90 cm but i dont use it as much as my 40x60 for portraits headshots. Do you have tutorials outdoor offcamera flash at day time? // Jose
@GavinHoey5 жыл бұрын
Big studio or small I like close lighting. Distance has a number of properties including the spread of light, back the light up and the drop off of light in the lower half of the frame would be reduced.

With a strip is a standard power Speedlite able to get even light coverage left to right taking into account the all Softboxes have some degree of center hotspots?
@GavinHoey5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim. Your right, all softboxes have some degree of centre hotspot. The bare bulb flash I used here does a great job at evening things out. A speedlight set to super wide angle combined with an inner baffle on the strip box should be reasonably good to.

since a few months I have been infected with the photography virus :-) After browsing the internet for tips and ideas, I came across your KZbin channel last week Your explanation is great and above all easy to understand The only problem I have now is that I have little time to go to work ,, I just keep watching your videos :-) geezz am i addicted now ? haha but have a question, Gavin,, and saw it a few times in your studio ,, you just see the recording of the video clearly with good light, and when you show your test photo's are wonderfull dark in the background ,, so the question is ,, do you tunr the light off in the studio ? when you take the photo or how should I see it? it seems to me the light in the studio must have some impact on the photo ?

You’re great! Would this work the same way with an Einstien light and med octobox?
@GavinHoey6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sharron. Yes to the Einstein light in the same sized softbox. No to the medium ocotbox. BUT... Different isn't bad (or good) it's just different. So try it with your set-up, see what happens and learn as you do :)
@ruthannhiner44846 жыл бұрын
Very informative - thanks!
@NeilSnapePhotography6 жыл бұрын
Well if you put the light higher you have less light on his neck, if you use a round source like an octagon, you have more natural shadows and of course a more attractive round catchlight in the eyes.
@GavinHoey6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely right Neil. If, if , if... and that's the beauty of photography. There's no absolute rights, no absolute wrongs just endless ways to take photos and have fun :)

I am always curious on where the flash are in these videos. No one seem to explain that. It doesn’t look like you use the cameraflash(?)
@GavinHoey6 жыл бұрын
The flash is at the back of the softbox, the lighting diagrams should help explain its position. There's no flash on my camera, the flash in the softbox is triggered by the transmitter on top of my camera.
