I have seen Vasa twice. They have also recreated some parts of the ship's interior so visitors can get a real feel of what it was like below deck. Well worth a visit.

@@douglasmckee9574 I read about that years ago. According to that, the king had too much say on how Vasa was built. He was not a marine engineer and should never have butted into something that wasn't his domain. I believe they thought she could make it across the bay. Afterwards they'd add more ballast.

I used to fly to Stockholm often, as a pilot for TWA. I went to the Wasa museum-utterly amazing! I’ve heard that the man who found it in the 1960’s, went out in a small boat. He fashioned a hollowed out plumb-bob with sharp edges. He’d drop it from a fishing pole, until he found old oak. After searching the area it sank, he mapped its location, by finding wood in his plumb-bob! The Swedish Navy divers took on the raising, as a project for their divers b

Watching the History Channel on the Vasa the ship had to undergo years of a preservation process of being sprayed with a chemical paraffin mix in order to keep the the wood from drying out and rotting. Vasa is also the only 17th century ship in existence. I wish I could tour the museum and see the ship.

It is my national duty to tell you that, and for the record, four Finnish college students smuggled a small bronze statue of a famous Finnish runner on the deck of the Wasa ship as a prank, right before the the deck became visible. Look, this warship was not sunk! It SANK due to a construction mistake. In addition to that mistake the original shipwright passed away while this ship was built. His assistant had to take over but there were no plans available. These plans were in the deceased shipwrights head as usual in these days. An other mistake was that king Gustav II Adolf had ordered to equip the ship with more guns. This led to instability which had already been evident during stability tests. Reports say that the ships sails cought wind coming from the heights of Söder (the southern district of Stockholm) and the ship immediately started to heel and as her gun ports near the waterline were all open she took too much water and sank. I have also seen the Wasa several times, the first time I think in the early 1960s a few years after she had been raised. It is amazing to look at her each time.

The ship wich had the shorter life of all navies. Less than one n/m. Pity, she is beautyful. I would like to know what was exactly the problem.
@Vermiliontea3 жыл бұрын
Too many guns. That's one way to describe it. In those days, they balanced the ship by pulling on a rope tied to a mast, and loading ballast into the ship until some criteria, concerning heeling angle and force on the rope, was achieved. The other part that had to be watched simultaneously, was how deep in the water the hull was. If it gets too low, before you have reached the desired ballast, you have to remove weight higher up. That was normally guns, but you can also remove sculptures, cut down the rig (shorter masts), or even remove a deck at the head or stern. In short, you had a choice between how stiff you wanted the ship to be, or how many guns. For various reasons, which I don't know, this process wasn't entirely properly finished, before it was decided to sail her a short distance. Her lower gun ports were open. I don't remember why. Salute? Fresh air? Anyway, lots of sail up, there was a sudden gale force gust pushing her over. The water gushed in through the open ports. She never straightened again. Heavy cannons rolled across the deck and increased the imbalance. I don't subscribe to the notion that Wasa was exactly designed wrong. But in the sense of how many guns the King wanted her to have, she was. They would have had to remove guns or change the higher up guns for smaller, and load more ballast. And if she had survived that first short trip, that is probably what would have happened. But then we would never have been able to see and examine her today.
