U-534 had aboard a crew of 52 men; all escaped the sub, 49 survived to be rescued. Five were trapped in the torpedo room as she began to sink, but they managed to escape through the torpedo loading hatch once the boat had settled on the sea bed. They planned their escape the way that they had been trained, exiting through the forward torpedo hatch once the U-boat had settled on the seabed and swimming to the surface from a depth of 67 metres (220 ft). One of them, 17-year-old radio operator, Josef Neudorfer, failed to exhale as he was surfacing and died from damage to his lungs. Two others (including the submarine's radio operator of Argentine origin) died of exposure while in the water.

There must be _some_ human remains inside when lifting wrecks like this (not this one specifically, as I gladly learned from another comment), and be it only bones... what happens to these?

You'd think someone would have done the dishes by now! Fascinating, 41 years under water, I would have thought it'd be worse for wear. Pretty neat yet very eerie to think how many allied ships this thing may have sunk and the poor fellas who fell victim to the wolf pack.

None. ALL the crew surfaced using the escape trunking within the U-boat. 1 sailor died on his way to the surface, and two others died of exposure on the surface. No crew died within the U-534 itself.

Of 40,000 German submariners over 30,000 never made it home. The US lost 374 officers and 3131 crew in 52 submarines. The Germans had 1,162 U-boats during World War II, and 785 were destroyed by the end of the war. The remaining 377 U-boats were surrendered (or scuttled by the Germans).

Ive been inside the U 505. I was in the back of the museum in Chicago.but then i visited several years ago and its buried 8n the old parking lot. The museum is great in itself but the exhibit is nice..You get a tour thru, everything is the same, you can even smell the sweat from the çrew.

But according to international maritime law, ships that have sunk together with the crew cannot be lifted! They are considered a mass grave! This boat could only be lifted by the German authorities! Or am I confusing something?

Yes because no one died onboard this one specifically. The crew managed to escape, even though the radio operator died on the way to the surface and maybe someone else. So technically not a single bone onboard, it was legitimate to lift it up. What is controversial is the fact that it got cut in several pieces for museum display. To be honest, the entire thing as a whole would have been better, like Laboe’s U-995 Type VIIC/41.

While the tech and design is older, a U-Boat is much more impressive to look at compared to the generic tubular shape of the modern nuclear attack sub. Such a beautiful thing to see.
