The nightly builds of PCSX2 are always recommended over the stable versions as you always get the latest and greatest right of the bat. It's updates are fairly frequent as well as automatic, so all you do is just open the app and it updates itself. Most of the updates are small, but there's a chance a big and significant updates dropping once in a while.

In recent years I’ve always used nightly, but I’ve never dug into the patch history deep enough to see what sorts of issues have popped up (if any) from them. So if i’m recommending to new users or someone who hasn’t touched it in a long time, I feel more confident in recommending the newest stable build. As stable build gets older, checking out nightly will become more and more important. Thank you for your comment. I’m going to pin it :)

@nthnglsn5 ай бұрын
@TheChairmanZero maybe I'm thinking of dolphin but one of them was locked at 30fps. Also there is now a conveniently located 60fps patch in the games settings regardless of if it hit 60 before, its now better. And the only way it worked on pcsx2 was on software mode, which is fine if you want an og experience but you can't upscale it that way. Either way this update makes it significantly better.

The black burnout skybox could be fixed in PCSX 1.6 by just switching to software at a menu, waiting the game to load into a race while in software mode, and once the race started you could switch to hardware and the sky stayed fixed just like in software. And it stayed fixed until you closed the game, you didn't have to do it for every race. Same trick worked with Black.

I just tried the Qt version with Ford Racing 2 and 3, two games that I knew had graphical corruption in the wxWidget era. Apart from FR2 having white shadows, I'd be absolutely lying if I said they didn't nail the PS2 experience to the smallest detail. And a "for fun" experiment - booted Abe's Exoddus for the PSX on it. It worked... somewhat. It got as far as the first screen where Abe spawns, all looking like an acid trip, then crashed when I tried changing the screen by moving Abe. 🤣
@lukabrasi0014 ай бұрын
how did you boot PSX games on it?
@ajflink5 ай бұрын
The best version is the early access one. 1.6 kinda sucked by comparison. Eventually, on the website itself, they recommended not using the stable one and use the beta/early access one instead. I have noticed when playing Ratchet and Clank 1 via disc on PCSX2 that it runs a lot smoother and maintains the 60 fps during gameplay with very minor and brief instances where it dips to around 42 or 45 fps at the worst, almost exclusively occurs sometimes during transitions between levels. I was even able to bump up the internal resolution to 720p without it seeming to effect framerate at all on my mid-end laptop. The PS2 Ratchet and Clank games are a bit infamous to get running on anything aside from genuine PS2 hardware due to how the games are coded and optimized to all them to run at 60 fps. This is why there are some oddities with the PS3 Ratchet and Clank collection or playing a PS2 disc of one of the games on a backwards compatible PS3. Correct me if I am wrong. I think 2.0 is a lot more optimized and memory efficient than 1.6 ever was.
@laserfights5 ай бұрын
i haven’t even thought of playing PCSX2 on disc in probably years. That’s really interesting, I’ll have to mess around with that. Do you know of any other games that act like that?
@ajflink5 ай бұрын
@@laserfights Not that I am aware of.
@ajflink5 ай бұрын
@Krypto121 I noticed that running those two games does result in some frequent framerate dropping or fluctuating on settings that are fine for Ratchet and Clank 1. Does doing what you suggest cause them to run smoothly more consistently? Keep in mind that I am running off actual discs of the games. So, I am not sure if that affects anything.

I've actually never done any testing with it, so I'm not sure how it compares to a PS2. I'll look deeper into it for you. PCSX2 with G-Sync @ 120Hz = responsive af. The GC & Wii emulator Dolphin can be nearly as responsive, but at the cost of smooth frame pacing. Some emulators (aka cores) in RetroArch include a feature called Run-Ahead Frames that can reduce latency to levels lower than that of original hardware, but it's sort of experimental, so try it on a per-game basis. I've gotten great results with the Metal Slug games 1 thru 5. Super responsive compared to the Arcade / Neo Geo.

pcsx2.net/blog/2024/pcsx2-2-release " *Goodbye Goldfish Brain, Hello Per-Game Settings* A long-standing issue from wxWidgets was the burden of changing your settings every time you switched games. Even though automated game fixes have mostly solved this problem on their own, there remain any personal touches you might make. Say you want to run different games at different resolutions; that's still something you have to change every time you switch games, right? Not any longer! PCSX2 now includes per-game settings which are detached from your global settings. The per-game settings will always default to inherit from your global settings, but they allow you to explicitly set a value for one game in particular. Now if you want to run a game at a higher resolution than the rest or use specific memory cards for different games, you can set it once in your per-game settings and forget about it."

I love this emulator in its current state. One of the coolest features of PCSX2 is its EE Cycle Rate setting. You can use it to eliminate frame drops that actually happen on original PS2 hardware. Set it to 180% for Mercenaries and you should have a much smoother game, depending on your PC specs, of course. It's essential for games with double fps patches, such as Black.
