Border Collie - a Great Aunt had one. Super intelligent, gentle, faithful, and affectionate. When I was a young child, it was almost like he thought he was looking after me. If we got to a road and it wasn't safe to cross, he'd sit down, be very alert, watching the traffic, and wouldn't budge until it was safe. He was also very good at opening doors. Best Wishes. ☮

Two things I learned: 1) Larnell was a last- minute replacement for their usual drummer because of visa/passport problems and learned the entire setlist on the flight to the Netherlands; 2) the crazy thing about Corey's solo is that he's doubling that fast, intricate solo with his other, theoretically slower hand.

Something that always amazes me about Shofukan, the trumpet solo is by Justin Stanton who is one of the Snarky Puppy keyboard soloists! He plays trumpet sometimes in the brass section but the two Flugelhorn players on this tune are the usual brass instrument soloists! Such amazing (5 Grammies) musicians.

The middle eastern vibe you get is absolutely correct, I think the base player/band leader Michael League said he got the inspiration from some Morrocan music playing in a mall somewhere but he thought the third beat was the one, or something like that!

Shofukan is often the last song they will play at a concert, with all the public singing along. And when the audience keeps singing while going out of the venue, you know they have spent a good time. So good. It does not generally happen for jazz concerts... "We like it here" is to my mind the best Snarky Puppy album. All musicians are at the top of their game. Larnell Lewis, the drummer, learned his parts in the plane going to this gig. And he is fantastic.

Small corrections. _"Larnell Lewis, the drummer, DID NOT learn his parts in the plane going to this gig" Larnell had _'learned'_ two songs before he boarded the 'plane. He _'learned'_ the remainder on the 'plane. AFAICT, most people misunderstand what Larnell means by 'learned'. The drum parts didn't exist. What Larnell meant when he said he 'learned' a song, is he learned the parts that had been composed and recorded as 'guides'. But they didn't have drum parts composed already by somebody else. Larnell had to compose them; 2 songs before boarding the 'plane and the rest on the 7½ hour flight. You can confirm this by listening carefully to his Drumeo video _Larnell Lewis Hears A Song Once And Plays It Perfectly_ the full 11m:31s, not the video trimmed down to the actual performance. You can even cross check that the drum parts didn't exist by listening to the "We Like It Here" interviews, specifically to percussionist Nate Werth who was playing a beat for the rehearsals before Larnell arrived. Further, the album was recorded over 4 days. They rehearsed 2 songs during the day, and recorded them in the studio, with the audience each evening. Larnell was 'teaching' the rest of Snarky Puppy the drum parts during those rehearsals. I totally agree, Larnell is fantastic. Best Wishes. ☮

Great reaction! Snarky Puppy is the holy grail for musicians imho :). The „electronic clapping“ sound btw is an analog one. Larnell Lewis (the drummer) has a little splash cymbal laying flat on his side-snare. When he hits the cymbal it produces this unique sound with the help of the snare.

If you are ready to dip back in to Snarky, there are many wonderful tracks to choose from. East Bay is interesting harmonically. Trinity is another great ensemble piece but with especially fine reeds. And Belmont is just plain beautiful.

Michael League, the bassist, is the leader of the group and the principal composer. The core members were students at the University of North Texas. Oh yeah. And to top it all off? This drummer, Larnell Lewis (who has since joined the band) was a last-minute fill-in when the normal drummer had passport issues. He had about 48 hours' notice and literally learned the entire album _on the flight over._ They did a couple of quick rehearsals earlier in the evening, then just freaking played the live-recording album, and he did _that!_ I mean, they did do several shows, but yeah... bonkers. I'm _fairly_ sure I remember there being a flute solo or two in their catalog as well, but I can't recall off the top of my head.

Larnell Lewis is an amazing drummer. Theres a fun video of him on drumeo where he hears a Metallica song for the 1st time with no drums and comes up with a terrific performance after a single listen.

2x Avid S6L consoles. 128 channels of input AND output, from what I remember. Every single audience member basically got the final mix LIVE in their headphones. Every single band member has their own preferred mix on top of that, and then the drum kit itself has like a dozen or so mics. Snarky Puppy's sound engineering is what allows them to be SO DAMN TIGHT and still sound completely open and loose. You can see the control room absolutely LOSING it in other videos where the band just goes off lol.

I got to see them in Kalamazoo last year and it was amazing start to finish. There were some personnel differences (I missed seeing Larnelle) but it was fun seeing different brass players, guitar players, keyboard players switching out for different tunes. I felt like they had a fair number of players off stage just waiting their turn. Lots of musicians playing very well together to just make good music. They also had more audience engagement than I expected. It was a sold out theater of people who knew a lot more of their stuff than I did, but it was non-stop excellence for a very appreciative audience.

Welcome to Snarky Puppy. I've seen them twice, and it's mind blowing from start to finish. They have made the majority of their albums like this, with a select group of people as a live audience. They usually record everything twice and take the best run for the album. For a good while, they were recording each concert, and you could buy the recording at the concert, and download it the next day. It's pretty cool that I can go back and listen to a studio quality recording of a concert I attended. Snarky is centered around the bassist, Michael League, who more or less is the bandleader, albeit one who lets the brilliance of each player shine and work together. Michael will tell you that that is his strength, to bring the right people together to make magic. As others have said, "Lingus" is a must, and from this album "Sleeper" is also worth checking out. From Family dinner Vol 1, check out "Something" featuring Lalah Hathaway. Besides Snarky Puppy itself, they have their own record label, GroundUp Records. There is a lot of variety on the label, and all of it is worth checking out. Jazz with hammered dulcimer? House of Waters is fantastic (Try "Kites"). Venezuelan cuatro? C4 Trio ("Coroticos"). Becca Stevens and the Secret Trio (Oud, Kanuun, and clarinet), is lovely ("California"). One I'm very excited for is a new signee to the label, Varijashree Venugopal, jazz and Carnatic vocalist and traditional Indian flute (bansuri) player. "Harivaa Jhari" is beautiful with a stunning music video.

Snarky also did "Don't You Know" with Jacob Collier which has a couple of masterful quiet improvised piano solos. And then you might want to react Jacob himself, starting with the early stuff and covers like "All Night Long", Moon River", "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" before moving on to his own songs like "Little Blue" (Mahogany Sessions) or "Hideaway". I understand the feeling about being embarrassed about not knowing about some great talents that have been around a while with a genius like Collier who then led me to Snarky, Chris Thile, Dirty Loops, Dodie, Mahala, Tori Kelly, Yebba, Daniel Caesar and several others. I was a "semi-pro" trumpet player WAY long ago. At the beginning of this, I was thinking, "I could've played that. BUT.... after the early "straight-forward" play, he went into a whole different universe. Incredible improvisation! His bends and half-valving was SO well controlled that my jaw dropped. I had great sounding chops, but NEVER that level of "feel." He's outstanding. I was focused on HIM just based on my background. The REST of this huge ensemble was ALSO phenomenal. Great reaction, and GREAT artist choice!

I'm delighted you've found Snarky Puppy, and enjoy them. I'd hoped you'd enjoy their music. I feel their music is *Glorious.* It's cross genre, complex, yet very approachable. I'm even more delighted you started with "Shofukan", and didn't jump to "Lingus" first. "Lingus" has a 4 minute-ish synth solo. It's amazing, but maybe it's better to 'taste' more of the 'flavours' of Snarky Puppy before plunging into that? Maybe try _"Tio Macaco" (...)_ kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2HFlIeJeauGmck It's funky, with a Latin groove, and joyous. The percussionists 'work their butts off'. Or _"Kite" (...)_ kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3e4gI1rha5mo5o which begins full of light and air, but has drama. People will probably tell you the drummer, Larnell Lewis, 'learned' all the songs on a 7½ hour transatlantic flight. That is not true, and it's more complex. Larnell was a very late replacement for the drummer, 'Sput', that Michael League had invited to play on the album ('Sput' had a visa issue). Larnell only had a few days notice. Larnell had played with Snarky Puppy before, but AFAIK, only playing drum parts composed by others, eg. 'Sput'. Larnell took a 'red eye' across the Atlantic to The Netherlands, arriving on the first day of recording, and getting to the studio a couple of hours late (because the taxi they'd booked to pick him up at the airport didn't show up). The video _Snarky Puppy We Like It Here - Larnell Arrives_ kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6fbf2qteM-Gn9U (2m:43s) explains some of this. It's worth watching, it explains some of the process and is funny, and impressive. The music wasn't 'finished'. Larnell had recordings of the core compositions, but they weren't complete. They didn't have the drum parts. Larnell 'learned' two songs, and composed the drum parts before boarding the trans-Atlantic flight. On the flight he 'learned' the remaining songs and composed their drum parts. To be transparent, Snarky Puppy rehearsed two songs during the day, then recorded those two songs each evening with the studio audience, for four days. It wasn't one marathon recording session. Larnell had to rehearse his drum parts with the rest of Snarky Puppy, because they hadn't heard them before. Larnell explains the 'learning songs' part on his Drumeo video _Larnell Lewis Hears A Song Once And Plays It Perfectly_ kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHq6aGWMjbKDftE (11m:31s). Larnell uses the term 'learned songs' in his explanation, so some people think the drum parts already existed, and Larnell was memorising them. Snarky Puppy is such a simple idea: A bassist and composer (Mike League) gathers the absolute elite of session musicians and multiple Grammy winners in a room and creates magic (notice that none of them ever use sheet music). The drummer, Larnell Lewis, was called into Amsterdam to play the drums on short notice, thus he learnt his drumming part while listening to demos while crossing the Atlantic. This is by the way how they record their (obviously) Grammy-winning albums - in a huge room with an audience all listening through headphones while recording one-takes. Because, of course, they do. Next, you want to listen to Lingus (from the same recording session). You will earn the finest keyboard solo performed in the 21st century (by a Grammy-winning keyboardist) making his Grammy-winning colleague on the instrument take off his headset and leave mid-session). You definitely want to hear them with Lalah Hathaway on vocals (Snarky Puppy feat. Lalah Hathaway - Something (Family Dinner - Volume One)) as her vocals make Lewis stop drumming in the middle of the song for reasons you will hear but not quite believe.

Let me nit pic your reaction. If you don't understand structure of Jazz Ensembles, you'd been better off just "reacting" rather than guessing at what is actually happening. Snarky Puppy isn't a band, it's a family of very talented musicians, all contributing and sharing. The whole album displays that shared complimentary performance throughout.
