I only own 2 snakes so i have more room than most. I built a PVC enclosure for my Sharp Sunglow Boa. 72x30x20 inches and now am thinking about upgrading her to an 96x36x20. Great video.

I used to have all racks when I fell into large, now that I am a small medium, I have a hybrid setup. Having done both, besides being able to enjoy actually seeing the animal more, I really find no difference... besides how much my back hurts cleaning the bottom enclosures. 😂. If you take the animals out, let them see the sun, interact with them, they are quite content in either set up. 🐍🦎🐢❤❤

My go to for my adult emeralds and amazons is definitely XL hefty totes from Home Depot. The ones with the wheels. I cut a hole in the stop and cut out a circle shape of two layers of reptile screen. Then take plastic and heat gun it to melt the plastic around the edges of the screen. I’ve gotten so good at it, it looks like it’s manufactured that way.

Popular topic with a great twist. I keep them in a rack system for the ease in providing optimal care. Easier to spot clean, maintain appropriate temps/humidity. I prefer to admire and enjoy them while handling them.

I think this video really exemplifies a major disconnect in our logic for reptile husbandry. The animals needs don’t change based on how many other snakes we have.
@JasonsExoticReptiles
@JasonsExoticReptiles Сағат бұрын
I would count that by saying that Racks are probably the most suitable for everything then. It just comes down to the fact that they are not as easy to view the animal. Most pet keepers are willing to put in a little bit more time with the upkeep if they have easier viewing experience. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s better for the animal.

Excellent video. I'm fitting into the medium category and use both pvc and rack system. I did limit my pvc to only 8 because I do enjoy getting to see them as I work in the room but I know space wise it's just not doable for all of them.

Good video. This is what those people who only have one Ball Python don't realise when they complain about breeders using racks. As if you're going to have thousands of naturalistic enclosures lol
@flow9701
@flow9701 23 сағат бұрын
Do you think we should have thousands of ball pythons in racks being mass produced or is there an advantage to having smaller amounts of naturalistic enclosures? That's another debate though.

Maybe just don’t have more animals than you can house properly

Everyone understands racks are abuse. Does a wild snake live in a small hole ? Fuck no. Even breeders need big enclosures. I have 12 snakes I do breed and everyone in huge enclosures. If you can't provide the room don't have them. No different than any other animal breeder. People just accept it with reptiles bc they act like they don't have emotions like a dog or cat

I doubt I'll ever get past the hobbyist stage. All my enclosures are home built PVC 4x2x2. I learned a lot building them. When I start upgrading everyone this year. The new cages will be much nicer. Hopefully that'll be in time to get a baby from that sharp snowglow.

I've been building my own enclosures and also working on building a small reptile zoo. But I'm staying at a hobby breeder because most of the reptiles are going to be pets and for time to time I may only breed 1 or 2

I still don't really love the idea of adult snakes being housed in racks for years, and I'd like to see the hobby move towards larger housing for adult snakes involved in breeding. Not saying it's cruel or evil or anything like that, no shade to people who choose to use them, but as we learn more about snake behavior and intelligence I think there's a strong case for the benefits these animals receive from having large and enriched enclosures. At one point I saw a Snake Discovery video where they showed the rack they keep their adult breeder bull snakes in and while they weren't very tall I believe the floor dimensions of each rack was 6x2, but because of the low height there was still a lot of snakes housed in one stack. I think another aspect that people like me who aren't breeders need to be aware of is that if we want breeders to house their adults in larger enclosures then the economic ramifications of that will be that the price of snakes will have to go up to compensate for the fact that breeders would be producing fewer babies (assuming the size of their facilities stay the same).

@JasonsExoticReptiles 22 сағат бұрын
I don’t disagree. There is a certain economic component of it, but I will say that my racks are larger than most people’s pvc cages, but they justify the smaller cage because it’s a pvc cage and not a rack
@SeagraveSerpentarium

@@JasonsExoticReptiles Those people definitely have it backwards. A larger rack is preferable to a smaller PVC cage all other things being equal.

IMO people need to focus more on right temps, humidity and keeping them clean. No matter what type of enclosure they choose.

I would 100% agree with this comment. Ultimately, Racks are the most efficient and best choice for this situation.

Just because the animals are able to survive your setup doesn’t mean it’s okay.
@JasonsExoticReptiles
@JasonsExoticReptiles 22 сағат бұрын
I’d ask if you have any evidence that it’s not okay? What would be okay? 4x2x2 6x3x6? 10x10x10? What in your opinion defines surviving vs thriving and make you decide that just because it’s a rack, it’s just surviving and not thriving compared to what you make bee keeping in. Would a 4x2x12 in pvc cage be better than a 4x30x10” rack?
