I saw Jimmy 3-4 months before his death. It was at Walmart and I just told him that I was a fan and appreciated his contribution to country music. He was very gracious.

Terrific video! Tim's not kidding about Jimmy Capps' rhythm playing. I'm a drummer and my favorite thing about playing the Opry (usually with Eddy Raven) was playing with Jimmy. It was uncanny how he'd make the groove a mile deep and W-I-D-E! Plus, the sweetest guy you'd ever meet. I miss him a lot.

When Jimmy Capps passed away, I bought his book 'The Man In Back'. One of the best musical biographies I've ever read. Thanks for these stories - reminded me of all the good things recounted there.

This was wonderful. I read his autobiography, The Man In Back. I'd highly recommend it, lot of wonderful stories. He grew up about 20 miles from me, in Benson, NC. That area has a reputation of producing lots of very talented musicians. He was very helpful in the career of The Malpass Brothers from over around Goldsboro in his later years as well. One of the best stories in the book was about how he finally broke into the A group of session players, something very difficult to do. He was doing lots of 2nd line work, demos, fill ins, syndicated TV show band gigs etc. but couldn't get those prime jobs. Then a friend that was a session guitarist called him up and asked him if he could fill in for him at a recording session so he could go fishing. It was the Freddie Hart, Easy Lovin; sessions which wasn't anything big really, Hart's career was kind of stuck in neutral until Easy Lovin' exploded! From that point on Jimmy was in demand as an A team session guitarist. Anyway, check out his book, it's full of great stories.

Thank you for shining the light on Jimmy! When I first moved to Nashville, I spotted him having lunch on West End and approached him to pay my respect and he was so gracious and kind. Kerry Marx is the Opry staff guitarist Tim referenced.

Jimmy used to come into the restaurant/bar where I was playing after his stint on the Opry. We talked music, guitars and fishing on many occasions. He was one of the most respected guitarists in Nashville, and one of the most loved. He left a giant hole that will never be filled.

I watched him on the RFD TV show. I knew he was around for years, he did a bunch of the country classic artists get togethers. Until reading the list you just put down I never knew how many great songs that I loved forever that he had been on. "Amarillo By Morning" is one that stands out for me, "16th Avenue" is another where the understated excellence of playing is easy to over look but if you start really listening to it you can really appreciate it. Like Reggy Young there were some people who played on a lot of great hits, maybe that is why those songs were great hits. Thanks for sharing this.

The man is also just as good at playing lead guitar as he is at playing rhythm. He's a fabulous musician! One of his best lead parts was while playing with the Louvin Brothers. The song was "I Can't Keep You In Love With Me". Great stuff!! It just doesn't get any more SOLID COUNTRY than with Jimmy Capps!!

Jimmy Capps is one of those musicians that I forget about until someone mentions him. He is one of those rare musicians that can fill a role like he did for the Opry. He could keep many songs on track with his guitar playing which can be a real challenge on little or no rehearsal with a multitude of artists.

I used to love Jimmy in the Sheriff shirt at the diner. Was it Larry's ? He could play anything, anytime but I didn't know at the time how much he was respected by his Nashville peers.

I learned of Jimmy Capps from watching Larry's Country Dinner. They had him in uniform calling him The Sheriff and he went right along with it. I have to wonder how many other artist might have thought it goofy and beneith them. But I believe Jimmy's talent was exposed to so many n through that show who like me were not aware. And his sweet personality showed through and he became beloved. Also you could see the artist who he acompanied on that show all showed he so much flattery and respect.

I'm 71 and have written many gospel songs of many types, no contemporary stuff. All were written through various degrees of inspiration and perspiration. Not a great singer, but good with words, rhyming and alliteration is most important. A suggestion of were to go and what to do would be helpful. Thanks.

I will state that I loved Jimmy Capps (and Spider Wilson. Leon Rhodes and all the cats from that era), but everything you said about Capps' rhythm guitar playing, I have said so many times about Homer Haynes (of Homer and Jethro). Yes, one could say it seemed like "math" but Homer never looked like he was doing math...he laid it down just as natural as could be, like chewing gum or just breathing. Nice tribute to Mr. Capps!

Chet did play with them, too. Paul Yandell was being drafted and recommended that the Louvin’s audition Jimmy. One of the stories in Jimmy’s autobiography, “The Man In Back”. ❤️

Otis was born in 1966, and Tim graduated high school in 1977 ( from my research online) so he’s about 62? There’s a message to be learned from these folks that look healthy and appear youthful, who are older than we imagine: They do what they are truly passionate about, they take good care of themselves, and they are happy with themselves and successful!
