I was looking at NRL base class, decided on the rifle and scope you picked! I thought it was because I'm bias towards Ruger and Bushnell, but glade to see others are choosing them for performance reasons! I thought about the Arken Optics 5-25X56mm FFP MIL VPR Reticle ($565), but the minimum parallax is 25 yards.

I installed this optic on a crossman 760 air rifle.I have now shot the riffle around 500 times during target/plinking practice, and the kzbin.infoUgkxc4K63Fd5LglDMObu7-Bgapxp_ef0W8hE scope has done well.With this optic, I have neutralized around 30 pigeons that were invading one of my buildings.For my short range air rifle, I will continue to use this scope, but will be upgrading to a more powerful scope, when I buy a more powerful air rifle, in order to shoot at longer distance.For the money I have spent, this scope has truly been a great buy.

I truly believe if there were more people like you in this country, we would not even be thinking about the things you just talked about. There would be more respect for each other because we would deserve it. Our elected officials, would be people with integrity and a genuine respect and love of this country, and the citizens that live here. Grieat point on needing the parallex to work low as well as the scope needing to be first focal plane. Personally I like to have the magnification range low end a bit less at no more than five since seeing the larger picture is important as well in my opinion. I ran the diamondback tactical for some time, but in the 4x16.

Great work! I recently bought the Athlon 8-34, but mainly for 50 yd benchrest. The SFP options for ARA-type factory class are pretty slim these days with a moderately-priced rifle. Thankfully, the reticle thickness (my biggest concern with this scope) at max magnification doesn't seem to interfere with the target bulls at all. This is now the most expensive scope I own, but it's built like a tank and fits perfectly on my 457.

I was impressed with this video and your knowledge of scopes and I have a very simple question but it's very confusing for me when there's an up Arrow on the turret that says turn the arrow that direction and it goes up I am confused on what goes up does your aim go up or does the radical go up which would make your aim lower can you please clear that up for me thank you
@CopperStarPrecision
@CopperStarPrecision Жыл бұрын
In nearly all cases the arrows on the elevation turret that give a direction for up are to move your point of impact upwards. This means that if you shoot a group and it is lower than where you were aiming you turn the turret in the direction of the arrow. Same thing for windage. It will move the group right or left based on the arrow. The directions are where you want your group to land on target.

The features of the Bushnell can't be beat but their warranty and customer service is horrible. I Bumped the scope on a stage prop and damaged the magnification knob. Bushnell said it wasn't covered. Vortex and Athlon both have amazing warranty and I would caution anyone against buying a Bushnell. When you buy a Vortex or Athlon your buying a scope for life.
@CopperStarPrecision
@CopperStarPrecision Жыл бұрын
That is a very good point. Only the higher end scopes from Bushnell (Trophy, Elite, and Legend series) qualify for the "no questions asked" lifetime warranty that covers accidental damage. I also have many a Vortex product and am impressed with their VIP warranty. However, the Diamondback Tactical has some of the absolute worst turrets I have felt on any scope. They are mush. I have a StrikeEagle on my Open Class rifle and think it's the best value for the NRL22 game, but it doesn't fit the Base Class budget. I have limited experience with Athlon, but many people are fond of them. Having only been founded in 2014 may be a deterrent to some people, but they have come out of the gates swinging to capture market share. Another relatively newcomer is Arken Optics and their EP5 admittedly should have been included on this list. All in all there are a lot of choices out there and at least on paper I felt the Match Pro was the winner. Also ended up being the cheapest at $375 with code MP75OFF on their website. Sorry to hear about your experience with the Bushnell customer service. Thanks for commenting.

I use it at the range and have alot of success against my shooting buddies. Would it be ok to use a scope like the one I described above until I find something I like? Funny how so many Americans like to work in base 10, but don't like the metric system, lol. I like the Arken SH4-Gen2 except for the 8 mil/rev turrets. I also REALLY like the Discovery optics PRS ED 5-25x56. Great scope with very nice glass for the price point. Comes with rings, etc. WONDERING how important min parallax is. The metric system is crap hear in Canada. If every thing was in 5 and 10 then it would be grate but hear when you buy something with Metric on it, it is still in ounces or pounds just the metric equivalent. they said it would be easer to work with but when you gets cans marked 156 ml; 389 ml ; 284 ml; 540ml; 369ml; How is this easer to work with than 10oz; 20oz or even 28oz or 48oz, if they did in it 100ml or 500ml or 1 liter then I would gladly of liked the metric system but the numbers they use on caned and other products it is much easer to stick with what we had. The Canadian government told us every thing would be in 5 and 10 so it would be easer to work with, but that was a pile of bull and we have been on the metric system for some time. The other thing when they switched the gas pumps over to liters. in stead of imperial gallons, I said when the gas prices go up it will be .02 or ,03 cents per liter instead of .01 or.02 cents per imperial gallon and the prices would more than triple in no time. But I was wrong there it went up five times. These are a few of the reasons people here we do not like the metric system. That one cent per gal = 4.5 cents per gal or for 2cents + 9 cents per gallon, just another way of getting more taxes out of the people and not looking as bad.

Beware of their current Bushnell lifetime warranty. Not only for accidental damage but also for manufacture defects. It's not like how it used to be. They try to find any kind of excuses to not warranty their products then at best only if you get lucky, offer something cheaper and inferior to what you sent in as a replacement. Even if you sent in your high end expensive Japan made scope you may get a replacement that is made in China.

Their warranty department is bad. I sent in their top end 1 mile range finder for warranty service years ago that had glue along the lens visible while looking through it. Looked horrible... Affecting the image. They said it was fine and sent it back. I bought another Bushnell product last hunting season... range finding binoculars. The illuminated reticle was barely illuminated after trying everything. I sent it in. Again, they sent it back and said it was fine. Not anywhere near as bright as what their advertising shows. Bushnell is a big corporation that cares more about their profits than taking care of customers. You might get lucky and get a good product. My advice for anybody buying Bushnell... Make sure it's good on day one. Plan on testing it thoroughly right when you buy it. Make sure it checks out good before your store return period is up.

A more in depth review is coming soon. First impressions are very good for the price point. Bushnell claims "Fully multi-coated and featuring our Ultrawideband Coating for increased light transmission, color, and contrast while also reducing unwanted flaring". While we always want the best optical quality scopes, this scope is designed for rimfire competitors that usually engage targets under 100-200 yards. A high degree of optical clarity is not strictly necessary at these short distances.

@CopperStarPrecision
@CopperStarPrecision Жыл бұрын
For most subsonic 22lr rounds your DOPE at 25 and 50 yards is very similar. I zero at 50 and since my rounds are ~1100 fps my DOPE at 25 yards is -0.05 mils. I choose to zero at 50 yards because that is where the sight-in targets are set up at matches during the zeroing period 30 minutes before the match. For PRS Rimfire/NRL22 matches we rarely dial wind, we holdover left or right of the target to compensate. This is why it is important to get a dead wind zero when sighting in your scope. In my geography the winds are most calm early in the morning so that's when I try to do my testing. If I get to a match and I see the wind is blowing consistently from one direction during the sight in period I might make an adjustment to the wind on the scope, but I do not reset the turret so I can always return to the dead wind zero. Most, if not all, competitors zero at 50 yards. The majority of targets are at 50 yards or beyond so with a zero of 50 yards you will always be dialing up on the scope for farther targets. If you're using a ballistic calculator it really doesn't matter where your zero is as long as you use those inputs in your program. However, if you zero at 100 yards then you might have to dial down or hold under for closer targets. If you have a zero stop on your scope then you won't be able to dial for closer targets. Hope that helps.

The zero stop on the scope I use (Vortex strike eagle) allows for dialing 0.5 mils below the zero stop so I dial down for targets under 50 yards. Usually the closest targets are at 35 yards. The June match had targets at 40 and 45 yards, but it's not many. If you have a hard zero stop you could find your zero, then dial down 0.5 mils, set the zero stop in your scope, but line up the turret at -0.5 mils so that your zero remains at zero, but you can dial down enough to engage closer targets. During the sight in period my zero is sometimes off by 1 or 2 tenths of a mil depending on environmental conditions. At which point I do make an adjustment at the match unless there is some obvious wind factor that is messing with it. You could just as easily do a correction in your ballistic calculator if that's what you prefer.

@@CopperStarPrecision By sight-in targets you find 0.2 difference from your zero and current POI. Do you readjust the zero on turret or just make new calculation keeping this 0.2 in mind?

@Copper Star Precision I shoot airgun field target, and my process is similar. I start a setup by getting chrono readings, and because I don't trust manufacturers' BC numbers, I also chrono at 10 yards to get a velocity retention factor. Then, I plug those numbers plus scope height into my ballistic calculator, which spits out an estimated trajectory, and I take the highest point in the trajectory in relation to the line of sight. My zero is dictated by the trajectory, but it can be tweaked later in my process. Then I zero at that distance, so it's absolutely dead on, and zero the turret. Then I take it out to 50 meters/55 yards, the maximum distance in FT, and I adjust my elevation until it's absolutely dead on there too, and take a note of the number of clicks. I repeat this at 10 yards/9.1 meters, the minimum distance. I will also do this for maybe 2 other arbitrary distances. I then plug my click values at given distances, plus scope height, velocity, and velocity retention factor into another piece of software that then calculates a trajectory, and click values for all distances in 1m or 1 yard increments and it's here that I may change my zero distance until its right in the middle ifbthe cluster of distances that have 0 clicks, snd there are no negative click values. This software will print out a tape that I wrap around my elevation turret, with all my distances on it. The way most people in the sport do it requires shooting ALL the distances, which is time consuming and not necessarily reliable. I use a lot more shots, but they are only on maybe 10% of the targets they would use, so my data is more precise. The other approach is to purely rely on a ballistic calculator, which doesn't work with airguns. The calculations are always off without real world targets at different distances. My method combines the two approaches so that I'm reconstructing a curve based on real-world data points, so it actually can't not be accurate. And it's proven to be very effective, but most people in the sport I explain it to glaze over because they think it's complicated and is too reliant on a ballistic calculator. But I know math, and I know curves like a ballistic trajectory can always be accurately reconstructed using only a few data points. Wind is a different story. That's a guessing game.

Given two of the best warranties in the business, I'd stay away from Vortex and just buy Athlon. Less chance of poor quality control and failure.

Athlon brand is probably the only Chinese made scopes worth buying starting from their Midas HD line and up. I have two of the cheaper Athlon Argos BTR 6-24x50 and image quality is very terrible on high magnification so I don't personally recommend them unless you really don't mind poor glass quality.

The combined price threshold for base class should be increased to accomodate scopes not made in China. Beyond being shit, we shouldn’t be support manufacture from a country that’s actively taking manufacturing off shore. Vote with your wallet.

Unfortunately most budget friendly scopes in the $500 price point are made in China unless you buy some of the cheaper Burris or Sightron scopes that are made in the Philippines or a low end Leupold (USA) that doesn't have the higher magnification ranges.

I'm not too keen on purchasing Chinese made goods either so I am especially selective and make every possible effort to only buy the best in class when given the ugly fact that they are all made in China. A $500 Athlon Midas Tac would be my minimum. It would literally blow away all of the scopes tested in this video in regards to optical resolution quality and robustness and tracking and reliablility.

Blame the US corporate greed outsourcing manufacturing to China to earn higher profits while sacrificing quality. Example the Arkens cost $100 direct from a Chinese factory then $225 goes into the US importer's (company owner) pocket and $125 paid out commission to KZbin reviewers (shills with links where to buy or use their codes for discounts) or Arken dealers. Bypass the dealer and KZbin shill links they are now priced at $289 and $299 today at Arken's website no code required unless you want all the free accessories package which is advertised on Arken's website. It might be even cheaper than $100 per scope straight from China.

It also applied to all other USA scope brands selling Chinese made scopes. It's not china's fault it's US companies greed. If you buy WestHunter (the worst CCP Chinese rip off scope company you can possibly buy from) and Discovery and Marcool and Vector and Monstrum Tactical among other Chinese direct to customer then you're really supporting the Chinese CCP.

Vortex Diamondback Tactical 6-24x50, Athlon Argos BTR 6-24x50 and Bushnell Match Pro 6-24x50 all start from 10 yards focus parallax. If your air gun has harsh recoil I'm not sure if any of these scopes won't break especially since all of these are made in China. If you put a US made Leupold EFR scope or a Japan made SWFA SS you will be much better off. You will also immediately notice the far better quality.

And here I just ordered based on the presentation. While not (at all) meaning to be negative, since I'm interested in your presentation (tho not a subscriber - yet), it'd help if you'd note in somehow such error(s). It's not a tie-breaker; I just now can't simply spin the dial (so to speak) & have to look when time's critical. 'Course what do I know? Again, not trying to be negative; your info (to me) is some of the most complete and helpful (for me).

I'm not really sure what your comment means. Are you offended because the scopes have a 50mm objective lens? There aren't many budget scopes with bigger objectives like 56mm and the difference in low light doesn't really matter when the NRL22 matches are held during the day anyway.

its annoying that people making videos cannot be precise in their wording its not mils...mil just means 1/1000 regardless of unit of measure the until of measure here is radians, but for scopes we talk in mrad or milliradians and then for smaller adjustments the smallest adjustment is usually 0.1 mrad

@CopperStarPrecision 10 ай бұрын
I'm afraid the only one who missed the boat is you. First of all, it's scope tracking, not tracing. Second, by your logic, a fixed power, second focal plane, basic crosshair reticle scope with capped turrets that tracks perfectly would be better than any of the scopes mentioned in the video for NRL22 competition. We're talking about scopes in the $500 price point for NRL22 base class. No one is going to buy different budget scopes or multiple of the same scope to find which scope tracks the best. They all probably track decently well and if they don't track 100% like you expect then you input a correction factor in your ballistic calculator after performing a tall target test. While tracking is important for all scopes, this video looks at the specific attributes that someone may consider when looking for a scope specifically for this division of this competition. This is common sense.

Let me help you with some information. Consumers just don’t understand sales concepts and price point. The cheap Chinese products are produced by super low wage workers. There are NO ecological or safety laws in China. Dumping toxins in the air, land, and water. If THAT isn’t enough to stop you from supporting the communist product, dig this. The importer get the product for $100 . He sells them to the distributor for $200. The distributor sells it to the retailer for $300. The retailer sells it to the public for a make believe price point of $500. THEN, the retailer gives you a make believe “discount “ of 10%-20%. So, you pay $450 for a $100(or less) scope and think you made a good deal. FFP is no better or worse than. 2nd FP. Mil is LESS adjustment than a 1/4 moa. So basically, you are absolutely WRONG. Keep reading and learning.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. ~Billy Madison Yes, most budget scopes are made in China and since this division of NRL22 competition has a price cap, budget scopes are the only option. Can you provide an example of a budget scope that meets the requirements for competition made in the USA, Japan, or Germany? I think you would be hard pressed to do so. While I do not agree with China's business practices, there are little to no affordable alternatives. You further claim that FFP is no better or worse than SFP. To use your words, "you are absolutely WRONG". For this style of competition, using holdovers on the reticle is an important part of the sport. Therefore, FFP has the distinct advantage over SFP since on a FFP scope the relationship between reticle subtensions remains constant throughout the zoom range rather than at a single specific magnification. If you use a SFP scope you will be at a disadvantage to other competitors using a FFP scope. On the topic of MIL vs MOA, while it is true that 0.1 MIL is less adjustment than 1/4 MOA you will find that the majority of competitors use MIL scopes. Furthermore, given the target sizes in this sport the finer adjustment of a 1/4 MOA scope will not make a practical difference. Since the majority of competitors use MIL scopes it is easier to communicate DOPE or wind calls to each other when using the same units of measure. Lastly, lets compare the reticle subtensions between a MIL scope and MOA scope. Most MOA scopes have marks for each MOA, whereas MIL scopes sometimes offer 0.2 MIL hashmarks. Since 1 MOA is ~0.34 MIL, the scope with 0.2 MIL subtensions actually offers finer resolution than the MOA scope. It's obvious that you missed the entire point of the video, but thanks for stopping by. Looks like you have some more reading and learning to do yourself.
