In the search for the BEST Sarawak laksa, we turned to the late chef Anthony Bourdain for inspiration.
In 2005 and 2015, he visited the Choon Hui Cafe in Kuching and stated that THIS exact laksa was "Breakfast of the Gods".
So one early morning we dragged ourselves out of bed to try it for ourselves and it was ABSOLUTELY HEAVENLY.
If you fancy trying this Sarawak Laksa, please go to
Choon Hui Cafe
34, Jalan Ban Hock, 93100 Kuching, Sarawak

Just add the word "lah" once in a while and you'll complete your Malaysian transformation :) Great to hear you are headed to Sabah. I love Kota Kinabalu. I think it's Malaysia's most beautiful city especially with the offshore islands. If you plan to climb Mt Kinabalu, do train for it as it can be hard on the knees. And do spend a night at the park headquarters to acclimatize to the altitude before the climb. Also check out Mengalum and Matanani islands. I haven't been to those but the photos look great.

Woo-hoo! A vid at last! I know it's not your main gig but still.. I adore watching your vids and you know I'm not the only one! Nice one with the nod to the late Anthony Bourdain. That's another winning factor in your vids because you add that little bit of love to it. You leave in the bits where you bug each other a bit and there's some small eye rolls to each other and that. Your enthusiasm is contagious, your honesty is refreshing, your chemistry is amazing and your energy is inspiring. Malaysians definitely see you as Malaysians too and I can safely speak for us all when I say you will always be welcome here. Aaanndd this comment is becoming a novel. Anyway..per usual, it's a great vid. Have a good one you lovely peeps...til the next. I'm off to go annoy my cat..

Hi ladies, a tip if you ever need a place to do some work in Miri, Little Roast Co. is a quiet and small-ish cafe with fast internet :) There are many other cafes around the same area too, just a little more crowded, which might be a bit awkward especially if Justina needs to teach. They serve roast chicken, lasagne, pasta, sandwiches, and sweet goodies too - hint Nutella Cake and brownies. The best laksa and kolo mee in Miri (my preference) would be at Sin Foh cafe in the suburb of Krokop. There is also the Wet Char Kueh Tiaw with sticky ketchup flavoured sauce and egg drops - Sin Yakin Cafe also in Krokop. For special chicken flavoured kolo mee and braised chicken, try heading to Open Air market Stall No. 6 at night 7.30pm onwards - these 5 brothers have been operating the stall together for all of their lives - think post world war 2. For beers, head to Ming Cafe for some night life and the Roti John stall next to it!

Laksa is my favourite Asian dish, I've had it in over 30 different restaurants around Australia. I also cooked it many times using a special mix of spices for laksa that I found at a asian grocer, shrimp paste, water and coconut milk for the broth. My flatmates all loved it. There is no better soup in my opinion, although I also like Korea's army stew.

Also go to Semenggoh Nature Reserve to see the orangutans. You may consider Basaga Beach resort near Lundu, Malaysia as well. They often hire foreigners on a temp basis and you could live at the beach for free and make a little money. Consider Siniawan Night Market, its a preserved old Chinese town just a few miles past the Kuching airport.

You girls did missed a dish in West Malaysia, it's the Bak Kut Teh. However, there is a different kind of Bak Kut Teh in Sabah. Maybe you girls can try it.

I am sure you are right. Unfortunately I haven't been to Kuching since 1988 so, if this restaurant was there then, I cannot remember eating there. However I can say that I have never eaten an indifferent laksa, and one up there with the best was, surprisingly, In the basement food court of the QV Building in Sydney Australia
