UPDATE - DEC 18/18 - Sony has released new firmware (v2.10) for the a7 III & a7R III that "Solves the problem caused by a specific third-party memory card, which would not be recognised by Sony cameras." I know that some of you had problems with the SanDisk cards in your Sony, so hopefully this update will fix it. Please post your results if it does/doesn't. 🤞

sadly it isn´t as popular as it should be...but it´s the title, it´s to long and there are many non-important words. Instead of: "The BEST SD Card for VIDEO", he should´ve used something like: "BEST VIDEO SD CARD"

yeah, exactly, the extended contacts SDXC II never seen before; I thought that I know everything about SD, but not here... probably(sure) not usefull for video but yet another difference is random access IOPS for small files writing/deleting mostly ... 10 years ago, some cards used even SLC flash chips and Kingston Ultimate was the beast...

Here's the card I was holding in the video - SanDisk Extreme Pro 64GB SDXC V30: geni.us/PwlC Also, one thing I didn't mention in the video is the "x" ratings you see on some brands of cards. (e.g. Lexar 133x). This number is just like the 95MB/s you see on the face of cards--it's the read speed of the card when taking the files off and putting them on your computer. It was based on old CD-ROM read speeds, which had a base of 0.15 MB/s. You just multiply the number of x's by 0.15. So a card with a 166x speed rating would be 166 x 0.15 MB/s = 24.9 MB/s. Alright, now I'm really done. 😜
@geraldundone6 жыл бұрын
@Vadim - Sure! 😃 I would recommend the Sony a6500 (geni.us/l53ssL9 ). It can do everything you want and includes 4K. If it's a bit out of your budget, you can consider some DSLRs from Canon, some of the Rebels aren't too big, but they are bigger than mirrorless sytems. The Rebel SL2 (geni.us/9aTvbFq ) or T7i (geni.us/RVZJ5su ) are strong, but don't have stabilization in the body and only do 1080p. Same goes for the less-expensive Sony systems like the a6000 (geni.us/SON6cmx ) & a6300 (geni.us/9oU61zc ). They have everything you want except stabilization. For phones, the best cameras right now are in the Pixel 2 and the iPhone X. They are good, but not as good as the dedicated cameras mentioned above.
@geraldundone6 жыл бұрын
No problem! 😃 As far as point and shoots go the G7 is pretty good. But keep in mind that there are no upgrade paths with cameras like that. You can't get lenses, build out your kit, etc. Basically it's a single use item and when you're done with it or you out grow it, you have to start all over again. I think they are good for side cameras or travel cameras, but I don't like them if you are trying to get a serious start on photo/video. Here check out this video I made last month. It might help you: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmnGf6x-o5etbKs
@GregMcCall6 жыл бұрын
Perhaps you should have added to check the specifications of the camera as you might be spending unnecessary extra money getting a faster card if the camera could not handle it (eg. not handle UHS II and falling back to UHS I ) - Unless you have multiple uses for the card and one of the devices could use it.

This video is very concise and easy to understand, and again, now I can just forward this video instead of trying to explain things; usu ppl just listen to 1 or 2 points, then TLDR (R=Listen in this case). SD cards have so many critical details that are important to get right, it pays to be meticulous; looking at you neewbies. I've always decided on the price point I wanted to pay for cards, 30-35.00, and waited for the price to drop to get the good cards, (yes, exceptions, but mostly true). I reuse older cards, with low bit rate recording, for audio equipment because audio doesn't ever change, 16bit is top quality, and no one records in 24bit; there won't ever be a 4k audio, just additional tracks; also most audio recorders max out at 32Gb. Nothing on Hoodman or Sony Tough cards? The card you recommended is top quality & reliable; also I own these cards. As a side note, I've included older cards with the sale of older cameras to set them free.

I forgot to thank you last year when I first watched this. It popped up today. Since then, I bought a few 64GB SanDisk ExtremePro SDXC II, 300mb/s cards, like the ones you showed here. Great cards.

I concur with the overwhelming consensus regarding this video, extremely informative, clear and concise. I recently picked up a Fuji X-H1 and have been debating with the idea of needing a UHS-2 to handle this camera's 4k 200 bit rate. I understand from Gerald's explanation, the Sandisk Extreme Pro V30 UHS-1 card maxing at 240bits should handle the H1, but was simply curious if anyone has had any real world experience shooting the xh1 at 200bits with the extreme pro mentioned.

Hi Gerald, love your videos! Just wanted to add in that if you have an SDHC card, you can use a Windows PC to manually format it as exFAT, skirting the 4GB filesize limit you mentioned. Formatting it in camera will default to FAT32 (as per the spec) but it's only a default & not a hard requirement. I tested an exFAT formatted SDHC card in my a7 III and was able to record a 30 minute, 20.2GB 4K video file in one go. Hope this helps someone frustrated with broken up files save some money by not buying an SDXC card!

Thanks, Nicholas. That's a good point. I've done that before, but because I format in camera frequently, it always gets reset! Haha. 😃👍

Thank you so much! I was trying to figure out which card would go with the camcorder that I just bought. The description read: Max 128 GB Class 10. Wellllll, what does that mean exactly and how am I to know which one to choose? Sooooo, I watched several video's about these card, by several different people. You made the distinction between the SD cards clear and understandable. Why can't they all be like you? I chose an SD card that is 128 GB, 150 MB/s, V30, 3 in the U, and C 10 (class 10), so I can start to make video's that might go over an hour, so not the 64 GB SD card. Whew! That's out of the way. Very Helpful, thank you so much! I often need refreshers on SD cards etc. All I need to do is be capable of recording 4K at 60 fps. Since the higher speed-rated cards are double the price, I'm going to be ok with a SD that is rated C10, 128 GB Capacity, SDXC V30 I, I don't care about the download speeds once back at the editing station, so at 170 MBs, I'm fine with that. Thank you, all great information well presented.
