My first RC car was a Tamiya Rough Rider. I bought one when they first came out (I know, I have dated myself). A few years later I got a Team Associated RC-10 which I still have (somewhat modified from it’s original layout).

wrong choice. Grasshopper II, purchased aftermarket shocks, a Traxxas 12 turn 540 motor, the rear end suspension upgrade, and put on stickers and you would have spent less money and had a better car.

You will buy a grasshopper eventually when you figure out you can't have a hornet without the OG of the Hoppers as well. I have both. Both running hot brushless systems. I like mine better than my Traxxas bandit as far as buggies goes.

I was that 14 year old kid that walked into a hobby shop and saw three Tamiya buggies fro sale; the frog, the hornet, and the grasshopper! My dad agreed to let me get the hornet simply for the reasons you stated… It looks a little more aggressive, and it had a bigger motor and more aggressive tires, so dad was cool with it. It was the first thing I ever started and finished completely. I was so proud to have accomplished the build, let alone the fun that came with it, when trying it out for the first time. This may sound crazy, but it’s one of my greatest accomplishments in life at an early age. I built it, I painted it, I applied all the decals, installed all of the electronics, and drove it until I was able to tune it, and it just kept getting better and better. It helped me decide what I wanted to do with my life. I’ll keep that to myself but you can only imagine. Guess what?? I still have my very first Hornet from 1984. Thanks for the memories!!!

I started off the the Hornet and loved it. I haven't got a bad word to say about it, for its time it was a good buggy. I don't think that it can be judged as a badly performing, it's just iconic of its time. ❤️

I agree! The Hornet was my first RC car! Got it in the late 80s and my Dad helped me build it. I agree about not judging it’s poor performance due to when it came out. I made such good memories with it. My other friends had a Stryker and a Blackfoot and together we would just bash all day!! #simplertimes

I had a Hornet as my first real hobby R/C. I had a great time with it. I burned through those stock tires pretty quickly. Mine had the old "wiper arm" style non-electronic speed controller complete with resistor to bleed off the heat. Only issue I had with it was the battery cover would come off, but I built a simple brace across the bottom out of an aluminum can to keep the cover from coming off.

I have one of these, I've had it for about 35 years. It is a real ship of Theseus though, I can't tell you what is the original car and what isn't, other than the driver. They are the greatest RC car ever made, and they are the worst. Looks cool as hell and delivers a fun driving experience if you know what to expect, cheap, easy to work on. The back end is really bouncy, the fluid shocks don't dampen, the steering is flawed by design, it's a tad light on the front end and it is one of the only cars I've ever experienced that can both understeer and over steer in a turn. I love these things.

I got the Hornet for x mas in 1986, My dad had the hobby shop guy build it and paint it up, one of the best x mas's ever. If you want it to settle down in the rear, remove those black plastic spacers on the rear shocks, helps a bit, and get bearings for like $15! Great buggy for the day, you should try a Frog, much better suspension.

I still have my Grasshopper II of the early 90s. I made some custom mods on the body which I was pretty proud of, lmao and it has a 3 step speed controller operated through a servo. It was the best budget car, imho as all others were very expensive due to things like 4WD or oil shocks back then.

This was my first buggy back in 84, after having tandy cars that were lucky if they could do 4mph this was a rocket and amazing ( they get faster as the gears and motor bed in ). Interestingly I took Hornet, a Arrma Granite, and Losi Rock Rey to a park with my mate and his 3 sons ages ranging from 6-13 and they all wanted to use the Hornet rather than the 2 modern super fast one's, they just enjoyed how it looked and it's lower speed way more. Full ball bearing set is a must. Put grasshopper 2/super hornet front lower arms and steering rods plus Super Hornet front and rear oil shocks to transform it, plus a lower turn motor, steer clear of brushless as it will just wheelie and flip all the time.

In my neighborhood, if a kid was lucky enough to have a Tamiya car, I noticed that the car somehow represented the essence of the kid that got the car. Let me explain. A friend of mine got the Frog, and somehow he resembled a frog and his personality was frog-like, in that he had a tendency to smile broadly and smack his lips. Another friend had the Grasshopper, and although nothing about him resembled an insect, he was one who always aspired to the higher levels , thus the Grasshopper as an entry level kit described him well. I recieved the Fox as a gift, and the Fox somehow suited me, although I am not sure how or why. Everyone had their 'RC spirit animal'. So you are somehow a Hornet in your RC spirit, congratulations and may it suit you for life.

The bouncy rear end is because of the freakish back suspension set up. The motor forces the springs to max out as it accelerates, causes the rear wheels to become massively springy. Us hornet drivers love and loath it! They're are mods available. Great car...! Great vid.

You have to also remember, this was a low end model. Not only is it very old, but it also was one of the budget models. Same era, but higher end, try the hotshot, wild one or fox (all of which have been re-released). Still not as good as modern kits, but much closer and way ahead of their time.

I just came across your channel. At the time when this the grasshopper and the avante came out these were so much faster and more advanced than other cars. Tamiya has stuck to what got them there. Problem is everyone else past them and kept innovating. I had a avante kit back in the late 80s. It was light years better than what you could get at the big box stores. Parts were replaceable. I just wish I still had that car. I had alot of great memories with that car. I thought about trying one of the newer df03 kits but it still kinda antiquated.

Was the likes of the Lunchbox/Grasshopper and Hornet that peaked my interest all those years ago, my first decent Rc was the Tamiya Tnx Pro nitro, back then i didn't want the hassle of batteries and also had seen the vids of it winning a world championship !. My other half wanted to get it as a surprise for Xmas but the Hobby shop guy wouldn't sell it to her without giving a demonstration on how to run it in and tuning it etc... !!
@beyondRC
@beyondRC 3 жыл бұрын
haha love this Phil and i used to feel the same about nitro. Not having to wait for batteries to charge was a great thing. Getting them running, maintenance, tuning and up keep is what put me off these days and getting back into nitro. Brushless is now more affordable than ever and the best way to go fast which has meant a huge reduction in new nitro models being made. Its a shame but i do feel nitro will be dying out soon and they will only be primarily found on tracks with the racers. Sad times mate

@beyondRC

I totally agree! Bearings and metal gears should be a standard part not an option for them to try and keep up even just a little with todays market.
