I'd bought my very first and basic DSLR Nikon D3300 with its kid lens 18-55mm few years ago. It has very similar settings to your D3400 and had been struggled to shoot low light pix in Paris. I'd abandoned it, until today after saw your simple guidelines. I immediately took D3300 out and practiced the low light shoot with my neighbours Christmas lights, and the pix have improved a lot. I'm looking forward to take this heavy D3300 back to Paris and challenge myself to reshoot the low light pix of Fontaine des Mers at the Place de la Concorde. Thanks much/Merci beaucoup~!.

Your videos are exactly what I needed. I spent a while tinkering with the manual mode and wondering why the ISO insisted on being automatic and didn't know the key combination to change it. Perhaps it was mentioned in the manual but I missed it despite looking. I also learned from you that I am totally out of luck with the kit lense if I want to take any good pictures in low light.

Thank you for explaining this in the manner that you did. I shoot a lot of wildlife out of my bedroom window and I always get discouraged over the noise in the night time shots. I never really thought about looking at the photo as a whole instead of picking it apart when I edit it. My friends all love the shots that I take and I get the best comments from them when I hate the photos due to the noise. Technically, I would rather have the running fox in low light than no running fox at all. Your explanation about using the "meter" when adjusting ISO put it all into perspective for me. I am kind of new at photography but I obsess(ed) over noise until now. Thanks again! Quite honestly, some of my most liked shots were shot with ISO 12,800 or higher on the D3400 or the D7500 (Nikon). Once again, thank you!

Tripod .....lower the shutter speed v higher iso Which do you go by in lower light
@spyrosheniadis5 жыл бұрын
Good question. It depends on the scenario. If I’m out and shooting what I generally think of as long exposure, which is to say I’m going out at night to shoot cityscapes or landscapes, or if I’m shooting in studio with things like fairy lights and EL wire, then I go for tripod because I’m actively looking for the longer shutter speed for the longer exposure. Any other time I’ll go for higher ISO because I wasn’t planning for long exposure, so I’ll jack the ISO because I wouldn’t even have a tripod with me. 😊

When u have an external flash on the camera, does the meter on the camera recognize the external flash?
@spyrosheniadis5 жыл бұрын
Good question! It does not. The in camera meter is only looking at the ambient exposure. So even with a flash, if your ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed settings are such that the scene is underexposed, even though it may be properly exposed with the use of flash, the in camera meter will still show that the image is under exposed. This video explains in more detail what I'm talking about: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iprJqo2wgdOVrZo

How do I go about taking a silhouette picture of my kids in front of the Christmas tree? And also the classic picture of a baby playing with Christmas lights?
@cookie13monster8285 жыл бұрын
Jenna Balamane for the silhouette you’ll want to underexposed the image a touch and be sure your focusing point is on the tree. If you want a soft silhouette, use a f stop 1.2-1.8 ideally, or if your lens doesn’t go that low separate the child and the tree some so they aren’t right against the tree. Moving them forward will do a couple things, 1) moves them to a different focal plane and adds some bokeh 2) adds to the depth of your photograph making it more interesting 3) allow you to separate the exposure for the tree vs the children to give you a nice complete silhouette. As for the baby in lights you’ll want to be sure you have even lighting on the baby to begin with, turn on the lights they are playing in, then expose to the baby’s skin with your focal point on the baby’s eye. You’ll want the image slightly under exposed to allow the lights to glow and pop out but still pick up enough detail to see the baby nice and sharp. An F stop of 1.2-1.8 again would be lovely here. If you have a backdrop you want to included in your image up the f stop a touch maybe to 2.2. Keep your shutter abut 200-250. Babies like to wiggle and you don’t want motion blur in your images! You can edit the exposer but you can’t fix a blurry picture lol How this helps!

@rslim55 жыл бұрын
Would you use the same approach if you’re trying to get more light in videos? Recorded basketball training in gym yesterday and video came out very dark.
@spyrosheniadis5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the same basic priciples apply, increase the ISO, use the largest aperture possible (smallest aperture setting). One thing to keep in mind is that for video you want to keep your shutter speed at around 1/60 (which is actually kinda helpful in your situation). Faster and the video get's jittery, slower and the video gets a bit weird because of motion blur in the frames.

Spyros Heniadis Just wondering if you had a solution. I’m shooting a video in a room. 3 of us at a desk with a white wall behind us. We have lighting set up but also have a bright led sign on the wall behind us. The issue we are having is that the camera is sensing the light omitted from the sign and darkening the rest of the image when recording. Is there anything you can suggest? Without the sign the brightness is perfect..

1.8 vs 5.6 its 3 staps 5.6-4.0-2.8-2.0 it means at time 1/50 iso 3 staps 12800-6400-3200-1600 But 50mm dont have ibis so we need change time to 1/100 so one stap UP so we need high iso so our final iso with 50mm 1.8 at F 2.0 is 3200 Hmm not 800 or 400

I'm trying to do star photography with this exact camera but it keeps coming up with subject is too dark. Is there anything more I can do?
@spyrosheniadis5 жыл бұрын
If the subject is too dark, then you need a longer exposure time to allow the stars to show up in the photo. If you’re already shooting 30 second long exposures, then the next step is to use bulb mode, which I show how to do in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJ6ze4uMZdCHec0

Please help. I was at a birthday party, and the lighting was a real challenge for me. On one hand i had bright sunlight in the background. And under the structure was only lit by christmas lights. Tried many different f stops and shutter speeds. But i couldn't get that perfect shot. Just for ur info, i was using a sigma 10-20mm lens and the kit nikon lens.
@spyrosheniadis6 жыл бұрын
Hey Scott! In a situation like that, where you can't get good shots, it's often good to just get back into auto mode. The photos may not be amazing, but they should be at least decent. If you want to send me a few example photos from the party at spyros@selfhelpphotographer.com, I can take a look and should be able to explain what was happening with your settings and the photos you were getting.

@michaelpodboreski59045 жыл бұрын
Mubashir Qureshi yes, use a tripod while taking some stills and shoot anything in your house and you’ll see the results. I wouldn’t suggest trying to take moving subjects at such a low shutter speed. Best advice I can give take a bunch of crappy shots to learn your camera and then keep refining until you get sharp images.

You don't do night photography in hight iso! I have a d3400 in I shoot in shutter speed "30 f 9 and iso 100 ! You can also change your settings from af to mf. .after you stabilize in af chance it to mf and then shoot ! It's a shame it's a good just a pain for night shooting!

First; my menu looks nothing like yours, so that was a hustle. Second... it shows the brightness scale, but doesnt show if the image is under, on or above zero... so im just gonna put it on your ISO and hope for the best.
