Great tutorial! Most complete by far. One question I did have was how do you access the other custom modes? C1-C3 I get but what about the other 2? C3-2 and C3-3

Thanks! If you save to C3-1, C3-2 or C3-3, then Select 'C3,' then press the MENU/SET button. This will open the menu to select which one you want to display, C3-1, or C3-2 or C3-3.

Hi! I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to. Partly because my lack of experience in the professional camera realm and partly because of the lack of information out there. I want to buy a Lumix S5 and I also need a lens for it. I want to film super wide angle at 4k60 ( so the image will be cropped ) and I am looking for a lens that will give me roughly the same image as an iPhone 11/12/13 on the ultra wide camera in video mode ( iPhone crops in ultra wide video mode ) and from what I understand the focal length of the ultra wide on the iPhone is 13mm ( in photo mode ). What lens should I buy for the S5 ( preferably prime ) for this effect aka iPhone ultra wide video mode ( 13mm cropped ). Thanks 😐
@charlesn
@charlesn 2 жыл бұрын
You could get an 8mm Rokinon EF lens (or Meike) which would give you 12mm cropped. There are plenty of EF to L-Mount adapters. The manual one is about $35, while the MC-21 (powered) EF to L-Mount adapter is about $175 on Adorama right now. Hope this helps!

Hi Charles, great video, certainly the best about setting s5 for video. I have one question. If I understand well, the mov format is the best because of loseness quality towards the editing. But does it make sence to capture the video in mov and after editing export it to mp4 format? doesn't it lose more quality because of converting from mov to mp4? if i want to make videos just for youtube and i want to achieve the best quality as possible, does it still mean that the best way is to capture and edit in mov and then export to mp4?
@charlesn
@charlesn Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! You will always have more information with the .mov file vs the mp4 equivalent, so I don't believe a conversion would lose information through the editing process. 4k 60 in mp4 has a bit rate of 100 Mbps, while 4k 60 in .mov has a bit rate of 200 Mbps. Double the bit rate means double the data to edit with. Everything out of this camera looks great so if you are happy with it for your videos then I think mp4 is definitely good to use, but .mov will give so many more options. Here are a few other places .mov wins: .mov records timecode, mp4 does not, .mov can record 422 while mp4 can only record up to 420 (more color in .mov), .mov has a maximum of 3 hours and 4 minutes (or 96 gig) for a single recording while mp4 will automatically parse your videos every 30 minutes (creating new files). All of that being said, they both use Long GOP so they both have compressed image, but I just don't see any advantages for mp4. I always export .mov files from Davinci myself, but KZbin is going to use their compression regardless how I export so....if you're happy with how it looks on KZbin then definitely use either one, but I think you'll have more information to edit in Davinci (Premier Pro, etc) regardless of the export format.

Hey Charles, I too have a Lumix S5 but I'm not exactly camera savvy. I'm heading to Iceland and New Zealand soon and plan to record everything on my S5. Will Vlog be the best setting for color grading later? And do you have any tips btw?
@charlesn
@charlesn Жыл бұрын
Definitely use vlog to get the most dynamic range out of the camera. It flattens the color profile, but requires a LUT to convert the vlog profile to Rec709. If you use davinci resolve (highly recommended), the LUT is built in and super easy to apply. If you want to see a more natural color profile while still filming in vlog just turn on the Rec709 LUT in camera. Gear Icon > Camera Icon (5th down) > V-Log View Assist > LUT Select > Vlog_709 - then > LUT View Assist (Monitor) > ON

I ordered sigma 28-70mm 2.8 with my s5, is it good or I should buy panasonic 50mm f1.8 ? Thank u
@charlesn
@charlesn 2 жыл бұрын
Either lens is great in my opinion, just depends on your use. You definitely have more flexibility with 28-70 to shoot anything from landscape to portrait. 2.8 is still a great aperture. There is quite a bit of Canon L glass (some of their best) that is F4 and they are still great to shoot with. I haven't used the 28-70, 2.8 L-mount so I'd be curious to your thoughts after you shoot with it for awhile. I love my Sigma 18-35, 1.8 on the 6K Pro.

HLG (Color Space Transform-> Rec2020/Rec2100(HGL)/Rec709/Rec709) or V-log (much more manipulation) ? Or is it more a philosophical question, like Nikon vs Canon, Windows vs Linux?

@charlesn
@charlesn 2 жыл бұрын
The S1H's biggest advantage that I can tell compared to the S5 is the in-body 10 bit recording modes with unlimited 4k and 6k and the Optical Low Pass Filter to fight Moire over the sensor, which might be why it was added to the approved Netflix list. If you can find a good deal used, it would be a fantastic camera for sure.

What is the best video setting for AF on the S5? I have issue with it when shooting person and just move away or closer to the subject is instantly loses focus on the face. I would've expected at least to track the face when I am moving really slow.
@charlesn
@charlesn Жыл бұрын
This is achilles heal of the S5 sadly, but...these are the steps for best results: (1) light your subject well, it doesn't work as well in dim light (2) Select 'C' on the autofocus dial for continuous (3) Select AF mode > "Tracking" (4) half press the trigger to lock the box to 'green' on a subject. Autofocus is a little faster using Lumix native lenses as well. Hope this helps!

Hey Charles, I have a question. I am using the same film settings but when I bring the MOV files to my computer, quicktime and DaVinci resolve wont recognize the files. I can only view the files in VLC. I am trying to figure out if I am missing a codec or something. Do you know what might be the problem?
@charlesn
@charlesn Жыл бұрын
That’s a weird one for sure. .mov are native for QuickTime. The only thing I could suggest is to try to see if there is a update for QuickTime and/or your computer’s operating system because of a missing codec or plugin, especially if Davinci isn’t recognizing them either.

@@johnboy10 You can try changing the shutter from 180 degrees to 181 or 179 possibly to help if that happens. But you might also run into issues if you are trying to use those files on software/hardware in your region that isn't compatible. I admit I don't where that issue might be more prevalent but you might double check where you're using these types of files and test them there first.

Hi, what happens when I have filmed in two different frame rates, one in 4k 25fps, one in 4k 50fps ? I would like to include both in the same timeline, so what timeline frame rate speed do I select at the beginning when creating a new project and what output speed do I select to make sure it plays correctly, and plays both normal motion and and slow motion ? Total beginner, cheers.
@charlesn
@charlesn 2 жыл бұрын
No worries! If your timeline is 25 fps (we use 24 or 23.976 in the US) you'll get your most natural looking motion blur with those shots, as opposed to the 50 fps, the motion blur will be reduced...if you're using the 180 degree rule (recommended). Try to only film high frame rate shots you are looking to slow down (speed ramp, etc) in post and film the rest in your native fps to the timeline. Also, 30 fps is usually the 'soap opera' or 'tv news' look. so unless you're looking for those type of shots, try to avoid using that frame rate. Hope this helps!

@@charlesn Thanks so much for the information. I think I know what you mean now....Try to film at 25fps ( here in Australia) for most of my shots, and only shoot in higher frame rates for slow motion stuff, but drop both of them onto a 25fps timeline in the editor ? And would I be also exporting in 25fps as well ? Thanks bud, your a champion.

Is there a downside to using lower iso sensitivity in Vlog? Like maybe added noise or something? Lol just realized with your video that you could bypass this.
@charlesn
@charlesn 2 жыл бұрын
I do not think there is a downside using the extended lower iso, only an upside because you get less in-body processing for light which is better processed in your video editor. Every comparison I did showed lower ISO was cleaner to me. that being said, you can still get some good looking shots with higher iso on this camera.

Charles I just wish that at least in Super 35mm mode the Panasonic S5 has unlimited recording time limit in 10 bit 4K. Granted I do know that in 10 bit HD 1080 and 8 bit 4K it has unlimited recording in all it's formats I just wish it has unlimited recording time limit in 10 bit 4k in all formats instead of a 30 minute time limit in 4K

The secret to the S5 is even though the body doesn't record All-i or RAW, the Atmos Ninja V or the Blackmagic Video assist does. It essentially saves you the money from purchasing the S1H (same sensor) but using an external recorder for those added capabilities. Most of my work isn't recorded in RAW so LongGOP looks great.
