I think people have a fixed mentality of the "black struggle background" stereotype so much so that most black people have adopted the stereotype therefore when a black family doesnt fit into that "criteria", it is automatically perceived as being "whitewashed" or "abandoning your culture/roots" which is rarely ever the case.

But realize the key word being "portrayed". Just because white families are majorly always presented as close to "perfect" damn sure doesn't mean that they are. And I feel Precious understands that. She's saying they wanted a "white black family" in the sense that they wanted this family to be depicted the way white families traditionally are depicted to show that we too can have that family dynamic- successful and non dysfunctional. But I'm quite sure she knows that white families/people aren't all perfect the way they are portrayed, just like not all black folk are unlike the Huxtables contrary to how we are mostly portrayed in the media.
