We just got our Kubota B2320 TLB delivered and when we were ordering the bucket for the backhoe, we decided to pick the largest one we could order (16")😀👍. We figured if the finance rate was 1.77%, it would make more sense to finance the larger one and pay cash later for the less expensive smaller one for narrow trenching. Glad to hear we got the best size first.
@daveknowshow5 жыл бұрын
that was a smart idea on financing the more costly one. I hope to get a narrow trenching bucket at some point myself.

I agree with you that the 16 inch bucket is a good all around size. Another factor is the type of soil you are digging in. If you are in a rocky or heavy shale a narrower bucket my be better especially with a small tractor.

I’m in the procedure of buying a backhoe attachment. I’m going w the 2’ bucket because my main project is digging a trench to move water from an old pond. It’ll end up being roughly 500 yards long when it’s all done. It’s only going to be about 2’-3’ in places. But it needs to be wide. I plan on feathering out the sides w a rear blade. I have some stumps that need to go but by the time I get to them I can get a 1’ bucket. However if I can sweet talk my dealer I’ll go ahead and get both buckets. This was an informative video! Thanks for sharing
@daveknowshow6 жыл бұрын
if its a big tractor a 24 inch bucket is nice to have. I like the 16 because its easy to make a 24 inch wide ditch with a 16 inch bucket and its less strain on the backhoe. infact a 16 inch bucket ends up leaving a 18 inch wide ditch depending on the soil conditions. check my video on stress points of a backhoe the wider the bucket the more stress put on the hoe. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJfcnJeBpdJ2n9E

Dave...you have some very good advice spoken from much experience, no doubt. I suspect your setup is similar to what I have, a Kubota L3800 and a BH77. When you measured your bucket and said 16” is the best, I said alright, that is what I choose for mine. I must admit, I choose that not knowing what you described in this video, I think I was lucky making that decision. Thanks very much again for your videos, I appreciate them. And get well soon if your health is not 100%. We all have our health battles to one degree or another but I truly hope you are 100% soon if not now.
@daveknowshow7 жыл бұрын
thank you for the kind and thoughtful words. yes the l3800 uses the same size BH as mine just a newer model. a bit more HP than mine but same frame size and backhoe size. the bh77 does dig 2 inches deeper than the model I have. I love having the 16 inch bucket and if I could only have one bucket to use for all applications the 16 is definitely the one to have. with that said I would love to own a quick connect for the backhoe bucket and pick up a smaller trenching bucket like a 10 inch maybe. I been wanting to build one for some time now. maybe in the future. I'm striving to get healthier each day its a slow process. thanks for asking and thanks again for taking your time to comment. peace, love and respect Dave

Where do you live . Here in pa we have large rocks and a small bucket is a waste as it won't go past the rock
@daveknowshow3 жыл бұрын
I'm in Virginia we have clay and some rocks as well but not so many where I'm at. the small bucket has more power / digging force in the clay and roots. I use a trenching bucket a lot when digging out trees.

Thanks Dave! Your video came at the perfect time. I ordered the BH77 for my Kubota B3350 (getting it on next week). My dealer asked what size bucket I wanted and I asked him what size for good all-around use. He said the 16", so that's what I ordered. Whew! I would like to get a trenching bucket somewhere down the line so that I can put electricity to outbuildings for security cameras. 16" is just too much mess for me for something that narrow lol. And keep up the faith. I'm praying for you too.

Hey Dave! Thanks for the shout-out! I do indeed love the 16" bucket. I was afraid it was too large for my little tractor, but it has been great. I have put the 8" back on now for a couple of projects digging trenches (like you mentioned). It is really nice to have the narrower bucket, but it is frustrating because it packs full of mud very easily. I think a real "trenching bucket" with shorter sides would work better than my 8". Anyway, glad to see you doing well!

I disagree. I believe a 24 inch bucket does a better job as it is small enough to work and big enough to more dirt
@daveknowshow3 жыл бұрын
depends on what you are doing. digging a pond or grave for a casket vault then yes wider may be better. but if your digging trenches for water lines electric lines and so on then a 24 would be way to wide to use. way to much soil to move. the purpose of the video is to average out the best size bucket if you can only have one bucket. 16 inches is perfect for drain lines covert pipes electric lines water lines and you could still did a grave or small pond or tree out a stump. with that said its best to have a narrow trenching bucket a 16 inch a 24 inch and a 36 inch or 48 inch if your machine can handle something that wide. change buckets as needed. but again I firmly believe if you can only have one bucket to start with the 16 is the best option for the money.

Dave, I'm thinking of getting a Woods backhoe for my 45hp Massey Ferguson 253. I haven't found anything but 3 point for my tractor. I'm thinking either the BH80 or BH90 with pump and 16" bucket. I will use it on a 28 acre hobby farm. Might bury a cow if needed; dig some stumps; some trenching; etc. There's only slight differences between 80 and smaller unit, but significant differences in the 90. Any opinions? Thanks.
@daveknowshow6 жыл бұрын
I'd get the best bang for the buck! being able to dig deep for graves of livestock is a good target to shoot for. that Massey is a beast and should handle the larger BH with no problem. I'd love to see some video footage of it once its all set up. I'll go ahead and subscribe to your channel so if you shoot some footage of the backhoe I will get to see it. keep me posted.

@daveknowshow6 жыл бұрын
I prefer to use the front end loader to back fill when at all possible. that don't always work out. sometimes you have to use the backhoe but be very careful there are major stress points that can break when pulling side to side during back filling. I have a video on here someplace about that. its here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJfcnJeBpdJ2n9E

Glad to see another vid Dave! I hope you continue to feel better. I have a question on my BH76. I now have 150 or so hours on the backhoe, and have noticed slop where the boom connects to the dipper. The dipper will slide on the pin between the 2 welded plates on the boom. There are a couple brass shims that float between this area,but there is probably 1/8" or so play on either side. I didn't notice this when I bought the tractor with 78 hours on it last year. Is this play normal?
@daveknowshow7 жыл бұрын
most likely not normal. I'd like to see a picture of it. can you send me photo? send to daveknowshow@aol.com try to get a shot of the brass shims. I will go out and examine mine in the morning and see what it looks like. sounds like the brass shims have wore down and created some slop. if that is the case you may be able to buy replacement shims / bushings cheap. if not I may can make you a set and ship them to you.

Hey Dave! With my little BX25D I trenched 100' for a direct bury cable to my shed, the 12" bucket (the max size for my tractor) worked great. I had a lot of fun and the tractor handled it with ease. I'm glad I have a small bucket anyway because as you've seen in my videos, if it was bigger I'd just dig myself a huge hole that wasn't needed. I think that a 12" bucket could dig a drain line, but as you stated, I'd have to work the sides a but to widen the ditch. Great info and insight as always!

thanks Steve, mine is an L2800, I think the backhoe is a BH75. I think its equivalent to what would fit the L3301 but the numbers did change. about the same digging depth. the bh92 is a larger hoe that fits the larger L series near the 40 hp and up.

the best bucket for a backhoe is a quick attach an an assortment of buckets hammers tanpers thumb as they all are made for the job they are made for, who wants to pay you 5 hours to dig a 6 foot deep trench 18 inchs wide for a 1 inch water line, time is money an its a lot of digging, on the other hand your being paid to dig out for a root cellar you don't want to be there digging a 10 foot deep hole 10 x 16 with no 16 inch wide teaspoon bucket. then digging footings you don't want a bucket with teeth, same with ditching, people don't want yu digging for hours for a fence post hole 4 feet deep with a 30 inch buckt, the right tool for the job, then you have clearing brush an roots, you don't want someone there with out a thumb an a 10 inch bucket
@daveknowshow7 жыл бұрын
sure if you have plenty of money and running a tractor business then by all means have multiple tractors, track hoes skid steers and so on. but for the person who is on a budget and looking for the best bang for the buck in an all around 1 size only bucket that is a 16 inch bucket. which is the point of this video. to answer the question " if you can only have 1 bucket what size would I want? " 16 inch! all the other debate is not a factor because its not the question that was asked.
