I've skated my whole life and still learned a few things from this. Also made me realize how much of skateboarding is fashion. Brand loyalty and aesthetic play a huge part, but it's also not a bad thing. We are coming to a point where it's cooler to support a small brand owned by skaters. Quasi, Alltimers, Hockey, Carpet, Sour, Cleaver, etc. Whatever your preference, reserve the judgement and spread the love.

I picked up skating again last year after about 11 years off. It's wild to me that the biggest names back then don't seem to have much of a presence anymore. I assume they got bought out or absorbed by a parent company, but companies like Element, Toy Machine, World Industries, Flip, Girl, Alien Workshop, Blind, etc. just aren't nearly as common as they once were.

I’m about to pick up skateboarding back up as well and I totally agree! I’ve been out of the game since 2005 but with my first kid on the way I wanted to get back on a board and be able to pass on the beautiful culture I grew up with. I was a Santa Cruz deck, Indy truck, spitfire wheels dude and I guess Indy moved operation to China now and changing their logo?? Well see what my LCS has in store for me to choose from. What’s been the biggest hurdle to overcome since getting back in the game? Dif the screen name lol cheers mayne!🍻

@@hoonyur5973 biggest hurdle? I guess that depends what kind of skater you were before. I skated a lot of ramps and transition, minimal street so i was focusing on learning the street fundamentals. It is super fun for cruising, but doing tricks gets really hard because it is heavy :) So be careful while going up the sizes. one of the most important things to me, as a skater and an artist, is the graphic, *but* I also have a couple super rare/custom graphic boards from Lib Tech, that are fancy because of the graphic on them, so I've personally preferred graphic, sometimes even over shape and size, but that's been like, twice [Edit:] There's a (somewhat) local skate company near me, Gluefoot Skateboards that are specially designed to not chip. I've kicked mine into cement walls at my local, (multiple times) to prove it, and the guy makes them in his backyard. They're super cool, everything about skateboards interest me, from the art on them, to the way they're made, to tricks, everything. I love sk8

Example, I gave up skateboarding after high school, that was 45 years ago. I recently bought a couple of Penny boards just for crusing around, and I think they're pretty cool for this purpose. But, maybe after I regain my skills, and I'm looking into more bitch'n longboards, I'm thinking about Arbor dropthrough longboards for longer-distance longboarding. Opinions?

Since you've been skating for 20 years, I'm wondering what your thoughts about smaller boards (7.5 etc.) were back when they were the size to go? Yeah, I was curious what board size Dan skates. I skated back in the 80s when boards were all pretty much 10". Then, I got a board around 2001 that was a 7.75". And this year, I tried 8, 8.25, and 8.5. I much prefer the 8.5 over the smaller ones, though I generally suck, so, your mileage may vary, but, I think of think people shouldn't be pushed into narrow boards. when i was a kid in the 90s i had a friend who owned a Variflex Breaker Skateboard which lived up to it name another kid asked if he could have a go on it and said lets do the flex test he jump on it and the thing snaped in half it was as if the conpany had intentionally weakened the board becuase im telling you now Variflex are normally strong boards

Would a new skater 7yrs old benefit from a flight deck, i haven’t been in scene in awhile, my last board powell wide boat single tail, slime ball wheels independent rear and tracker front. I am assuming that the lighter, better pop, might help him pick up some things easier and earlier. Don’t really know, thanks for your time and sharing video. Nice hearing about multiple boards in one shot

A lot about brand decks are about how dense or heavy the deck is. Besides the common maple wood, Brands prefer to get picky about 5ply or 7 play, or even mix these. Also different brands focus on either street, or more vert focus. BUT overall, any name brand deck and stock deck that bottoms to 30$ or so dollars is plenty good for 90% of people. I like Girl, Blind, Mini logo. Ive used those three and Real, Black Label, World Industries (super fan when i was a kid), Zero, Baker, and "Maple Boards", which was a brand at walmart where the deck was okay but the trucks and everything else were a laugh. Blind is super light. Girl has super good feel.

Im going to start skating again this season after about 15 years because i have a young nephew who wants to learn and no one to skate with and i have been wanting to get into skating again for a little while. Looking for a new set up now. Edited to add, i love the shape of Andy Andersons deck.

Almost impacts had something weird in them too. Can’t remember if it was carbon fiber or fiberglass but they were sick as shit. I used to go through decks so bad. Like I was having to buy only blanks cause I was skating through one a week easily and someone suggested I try an impact and I got one and that thing lasted forever. It eventually finished out but is by far the longest I’ve ever had the same deck and that was pushing maybe like 9-10 months. Before the blanks I was buying deathwish and baker. Mainly lizard king and Ellington pro decks but they were killing my pockets

I like dwindle but had a primitive I liked, stepped on on an April it felt great. I think cause a short wheelbase compare to real with a longer wheelbase. And non shaped boards have fatter nose and tail.

I wish i would have seen this video before i got my most recent board. I’ve been away from skating for 15 years and recently picked it back up. Brands have all changed and i just gravitated towards Dark Room because my last board 15 years ago was an Alien Workshop deck. My next board will be a Baker. Thanks for the very informative video man!

Great review. Woulda been cool to add thoughts on Bamboo decks as they are pretty popular and a bit different.

Great video and advice there. You should def do trucks, wheels, bearings etc. "Board shapes really became cool a couple of years ago"...........erm..........what? I've been skating since the 80's and all I can say is boards shapes only disappeared when the popsicle arrived. Best board I ever had was a Plan B Sean Sheffey(the troll one). The shape and geometry of that board was awesome. I did jump on the early double kicks though - I had a Mike Vallely Farm Yard and the Tony Hawk double kick(I believe the Andy Anderson board is an evolution of that). Squarer tails make for really controllable flatter ollies but make tre flips etc. harder......I think the inbetween is king - a squarish tail with rounded corners and a slightly pointed nose. Just my preference - but say for example Nora V's board - now that's my kind of shape. Welcome didn't invent it they just brought it back. And thank God they did. Every board being the same(popsicle) shape is boring and removes choice.

I can't skate but I love the artistic imagination that go in some boards.

It used to be that some wood shops had better boards than others but today you have to look hard for actually bad decks. Early breakage is hit or miss with any brand if you don't land bolts, but most shop or local brand decks I've skated always felt a bit heavier, a bit less snappy than, say, an Almost, which is what I usually get now because of how consistent their shapes are. Couldn't say if the 'single pressing' thing is anything other than marketing, but I have bough the exact same deck of other brands twice and found the shape and feel to be totally different

Been skating for about 20 years on and off. Always bought the cheaper mini logo or whatever skate shop house brand because they all break or chip no matter what. All the decks feel the same to me except you can get different shapes with big brand ones. I started riding independent trucks a couple years ago. No other trucks turn like independent trucks do.

Ngl my favorite deck is the green and gold tinted baker board, though I’m considering getting a ripndip board. Any thoughts and if ripndip boards are any good?
