The R231 is far better-looking (and technically superior) than the R230. The R231 is the first monocoque aluminum chassis in SL, rather than body-on-frame. I’ve owned both, still have a R231. This new AMG SL you reviewed is outstanding.

R230 and R129 are unibody construction - not body on frame. I can't think of a manufacturer that has used on body on frame construction in many decades for a coupe or convertible.

The R230 SL65 still had a spare tire, fog lights, more articulate AMG "Direct Steer" hydraulic rack and pinion steering and a power leather roll bar. Plus 8 locking interior compartments complete with heated and cooled glovebox and center console. Of course it was Bruno Sacco's last car to feature his sleek design language and it shows. I bought the R230 because it was also the last with a mechanical console shifter for intuitive driving.

Before you say this R232 is the best SL consider the refinement of the glass roof convertibles of the past two generations. They're quieter, more secure and don't require replacement every 4 years for $12,000 at the Mercedes dealership like this archaic fabric roof. Forever. That SL65 you drove wasn't nearly as noisy or rough riding as this new SL63. Yet was just as quick on modern tires. A later year would be even better.

Now they have an AMG you don’t have to screw up with oversized wheels and spacers that don’t work properly and rub the fenders or fender wells. It has a good exhaust and is designed to have those tires and wheels

At the risk of sounding biased, a Turbo S would eat that Benz for lunch. A more appropriate challenger would be the .2 911 GTS. I would still give the GTS the edge. Having said this, the SL is beautiful, again, with an exhaust note that brings a wide smile every time.

Too small for a Mercedes Roadster amazing attention to detail clearly not mass produced like a Mazda Miata needs to really pick up its game big time to keep pace with battery electrics as the performance of 2024 batteries and electric drive trains continues to dramatically improved with batteries become materially smaller, of less weight/mass, great power output and of course effectively 100% reliable add to that improved range and no need for fuel in the USA anymore not even a plug actually solar panels have become so efficient and in the modern vehicle design such as this said panels could be integrated into the soft top so will be interesting to see how Mercedes-Benz integrates literal free power into their vehicles going forward as hybrid drive systems starting adding an electric *"kicker"* to the ICE platform😊😊
