I had the privilege of knowing him shortly before he died. All around super nice guy. I went over to his house and helped him tune up a drum kit that he had won through a competition. At the end he paid me a hundred bucks, and refused to take the money back. A week later he died of a heart attack. I will always remember him as the guy who charged $5 for the kind of drum lesson that an equivalent calibre master-class would charge $100 for. He was passionate, kind, and charismatic- just the kind of guy who could get along with anyone.

He's a pipe band drummer, I play this style aswell. The sticks are way way lighter then marching band sticks and are made of softer wood lol our drumming style is very much oriented on the rebound of the drum. So soft sticks and really tight kevlar drumheads is how we get that sound.

@@GabrielBenay can u tell me what to look for pipe band drummer and different sticks I suppose ive not had the experience id like to get some of those and the marching sticks are indeed bigger than they look most can see and hear the drums easily enough in a stadium with 73k people less than 1k can relate the actual size of the sticks used. I thought "wtf" when I got to hold my first pair of marching sticks I mean I played quads in high-school because nobody else there could when indeed they were so easy the snare takes control sound wise and the visuals are constantly evolving I love this challenge I played since I got my first drumsticks I was given at age 3 lol im told I hit everything I seen with them and I taught myself to read music my schools were 2 different worlds one was not concerned with that band stuff they were focused on the bullets flying by (there was a ton of gang violence i was left there by my family) the other I was blessed with but it was a small school I managed to end up with barely enough skills to get a music scholarship at a major university I am 43 now and never go anywhere without my drumsticks. Please return with a recommendation of the sticks u mentioned id like to try them with my new pearl marching snare thank u and have a great day

Talent is talent, and there's no doubt this gentleman exudes plenty of it. Debatable means only that...best in the world really comes down to personal interpretation. How can that truly be measured? One person may believe he is, another will disagree...it's really just a matter of taste. Some would argue Niel Pert is the best, others may claim Buddy Rich is the all time great, and others still may argue Gene Hoglan. The list is endless...it's just a matter of personal preference.

Many are writing him off for ridiculous reasons. This ( I understand) was either a competition or a demo' of some kind. That does NOT mean he has no sense of 'soul' or 'feel'. He just doesn't display it here. A top technician, sadly no longer with us.
@cosmicdankhead91716 жыл бұрын
I disagree. You can see the soul he's put on the craft just by the way he plays. Definitely comes off as a technician, though. The soul comes from the beat of the drum, back to the drummer, and outward to the audience. You can't go far with drums if you're not willing to put even a little soul into your drumming.
@cosmicdankhead91716 жыл бұрын
@@Gandalf721 ahhh, I see. I can't really make an argument back lol I agree with you. It seems he spent a lot of time practicing this more than he listened to himself. But only because It was a competition, not because he didn't have a passion. Are we on the same page? Lol

It's how I learned. He said when the guys played together ( Rich, Krupa etc.) they would put a dime on the table and see who could play it longest. This guy is that good. Both of my teachers are long gone.

Via Facebook: Today February 11th at 2 a.m. the most amazing father, Wayne Oien of Jen, Kriss, Paul and Myself has joined god with all the great musicians in heaven. Wayne Oien, my father, brought so much love to my life. He saved me so many times, was there through the absolute worst in my life. It didn’t matter how horrible life got. He was right there to make it better. He changed so many life’s in the best ways. Always willing to help those in need no matter how big or small. Always putting others before himself. Changed the drumming world by proving a man of any age can achieve his dreams. Had so many friends that loved him dearly. Was the best dad I could ask for ❤️ I still can’t believe you are not here to crack a joke, to go to for help, to make life that much better. You were taken to soon. This is not fair, and Miss you so damn much. Love you dad! I love you more then you will ever know... Gonna miss you!
