Thank you, very pretty, but for me - it's live in toyko 1987 that moves me as his best rendition of this record. Like a light bulb that glows bright, right before it burns out.
A bit of joy, a bit of angst, rolled together into something lovely

Go listen to The Last Great Concert album. Just weeks before his death. His solo on My Funny Valentine is heartbreaking, wistful, haunting, lonely and on and on… his finest moment with many on that double Album. 🎺

He oido a los grandes de la trompeta 🎺 pero ninguno como Chet Baker por su entrega en cada nota su impecable técnica y sonido magistral. Un genio.

Although he led his own quartet, he was not a born leader and seldom asserted his authority.

“I like to play in the deep register. I was never a high-note specialist. My range goes from the bottom of the horn up to around C or D. High D is about it for me … about two-and-a-half octaves, I think. But in these two-and-a-half octaves, I can say everything I have to say.” 10:10 Chet Baker.

Siempre digo que Miles, te ametralla con diez notas y te deja asombrado. Pero Chet, te clava una sola y te deja mirando lejos, escuchando el eco...Admiro a ambos. Prefiero a Chet.

"My Funny Valentine" by Chet Baker is a love song praising the imperfections of one's beloved. It speaks to the idea that true love means accepting someone even with all of their flaws. The lyrics express the narrator's admiration of the other person and how their “unphotographable” features, and imperfections, still manage to make them smile. The song is a declaration of unconditional love and appreciation and ends with an affirmation that they’ll stay together “each day is Valentine’s Day”. 10:01 [Songtell]

He has a light tenor voice, not dissimilar in range to people like Nat Cole or Mel Torme. But Baker's voice was all “head” and no “body.” Source: The Arts Fuse

Was Chet's death (in Italy?) on another trip to the country? This is one of his longer, more intense performances. (I love that both he and Miles never fooled with the flugelhorn, which has become overdone---a smooth-jazz sound which every trumpet player seems to be enamored of these days.)

Entering the studio for the first time as a singer, Chet Baker gave “Valentine” what just may be its definitive treatment. It's certainly the reference recording for most of the vocal performances made since. 2:02 [JazzTimes]

My Funny Valentine: It has been recorded over 1,600 times by more than 600 artists, both instrumentally and vocally, and is permanently associated with Frank Sinatra, Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker and Miles Davis, among others. 5:05 [The WholeNote]

Chet's vocal sounds a little more improvised than the one he did in the 50s I heard here earlier--which was more like Sinatra's reading in the same period. His trumpet is great here.

Too bad the heroin got him - but then again he was probably high AF when he blew this. Pat Metheny wanted to have him join his tour.....he was so far out there pat's tune Chet's Call turned into a GR300 blow because Chet couldnt handle the rigors of tourin at the time..... Circa '84 only played live. Pat has never taken a sip of booze or did drugs and yet he was still willing to accommodate Chet.....Chet just couldnt make "the call". Sad. Sad AF.
