It was only a disaster because the net gerbils overhyped themselves. Plus, they had to recover from a disastrous flood that wiped out their studio in mid-development. That alone would have clobbered many indie developers. But, the nets are the nets and full of weird creatures.

I love NMS. Or rather, I want to love it. But without mods to fix the quality of life stuff (movement, landscapes, scanning, building) and the fact that regardless of what ship you have, the all fly the same makes the entire experience slow, and frustratingly stupid to mine and craft all that shit just to have no upgrades to QofL issues is maddening.

@GH0STST4RSCR34M Nope, you don't make a lie into a truth because you do the work after the fact after getting caught in the lie. I love the game nowadays but the truth is that Sean Murray went around interviews showing off features that just didn't exist at all in the release version all while he claimed they were in for the release version. Its not like they were a little rough or announced for future inclusion. Things like multiplayer, massive sandworms and more were not in the game. They released the game with all of those features not just missing but not even a part of the game at all. They went after massive backlash and added those features in, way after the fact. (which don't get me wrong its very remarkable!) But it doesn't change the fact that they lied initially. Attempts to rewrite history really like that annoy me to no end.

Frontier does have a unique concept of a true to size Galaxy, and a semi realistic first person approach. Many people like that, including me. The games presented here are so different, that many spacesim lovers will stick with Elite in the hope that FDev will wake up soon. I have been an Elite fan for several decades, but Frontier made so many weird development decisions that I stopped playing ED more than 2 years ago. I even canceled my order for a new Virpil HOTAS. I am very disappointed about the direction development of Elite Dangerous has taken.

i hope they get the scale somewhat right... stellaris always felt to small... even an empire with just one solar system with some planets colonized and bases in the asteroid fields and colonies on the moons will most likely have hundreds of ships in the early stage, and that will fast increase to thousands and millions of ships. just one system. if we manage fission energy and a constant g drive, the kuiper belt alone could house quadrillions of humans.

Considering the scale it wants to reach, it might truly take another 10 years. However, it will be worth it. What is already included is mindblowing, if you haven't played it yourself yet you just have to take me by the word as someone who spent a lot of time in the game, that this game if stable would already be the best space RPG available. If they do manage to release servermeshing and pyro this year, or beginning 2023, the game will reach a new height. It already offers what no other game does, there is no game like star citizen and no one will ever attempt to make a competitor based on how insanely expensive it is to make the game. Tbh, people who claim the game is a scam just didn't do any proper research. Being in development for such an insane time definitely is fishy, but once you realize what they have done already and what they want to do, it is perfectly understandable and expected to take much more time than it already did. It's the process of creating a masterpiece.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head. I think a vast majority of the Elite players holding that game together are new. I have over 5k hours in that game and I haven't played it at all since the "biggest update in the history of the game" or slightly more water to a damn near empty pool. Went to SC and never looked back. At first I was frustrated with both games one being a menu simulator and the other being buggy as hell. But CGI is really quick to get on top of things and made the game playable, I was plagued with 30k crashes but I haven't seen one in weeks. There's still bugs with the physics but I find them halarious at times. It's pretty solid as of 3.15. And the gameplay isn't focused around monotonous griding they charge you 40 dollars for (cough) which is cool. You can do other shit. Like free fall out of a cargo bay with some MOABs on their way to a capital ship. 🤷‍♂️ and space engineers... I can spend days building in that game. I wish keen would optimize the block rendering but there's mods for it at least.

For those wondering why Star Citizen is on the list: Disclaimer: I am a SC enthusiast so this is obviously biased. 2021 has been the biggest year for Star Citizen. We had 2 of the biggest patches ever, a whole new planet (doesn't sound like much, but it is), completely new mechanics that change the way the game is played (medical update), big events that lead to large groups of people working together or fighting each other (Xenothreat-event, Nine-Tails Lockdown, Jumptown 2.0-event). Many ships we have been waiting for got released (yes I know "CiG should stop making ships and work on the game". I completely know what you mean and I support that. But this year was CRAZY). We got a REALLY good look into the future of the next star system which will be huge (Pyro system). We got reworks of some mechanics and the turned out nicely. Star Citizen made a huge leap forwards and I recommend everone interesed in space games to try it out at the next free flight week. Ask me anything.

There is a distant lack of ship character in many games of today, of course SC has some options, and in Space Engineers you can build one but neither is focused on that, or have any affect on gameplay. I just want to fly around, exploring in my own ship, designed by myself. Much like customizable player homes in other games, with the difference that you bring this one with yourself.

Thoughts on a few games: Everspace 2 - Looking forward to it. I wish the spaceships controlled more like spaceships instead of an FPS in space. Still a great series. Star Citizen - They are hiring over 1000 employees but I still think it is at least 2 years off. Starfield - I blatantly refuse to buy Bethesda games on day 1. I'll wait a while. Starbase/Space Engineers - Not a fan of engineering type games. I like the customization. I'm sure some people out there will enjoy it. EvE Online - Not going back. Too much of a time and mental energy sink. Boundary - Never heard of this. Space combat in suits is actually terrifying realistically. You can get knocked off into the void from recoil. *Homeworld 3* - I feel like I have waited my whole life for this game. The atmosphere and story is really top notch.

Everspace 2 is the most interesting to me and having played the initial release, I enjoyed it but I didn't want to play it a bit at a time. So I'll wait for it's full release before jumping on board. All those employees for SC will just mean they'll 'add' more features, take more money and push any chance of a full release even further back. I've never bought a Bugthesda game but I expect the Starfield Anniversary Edition to release before any of the SC games hit version 1.0. Boundary could be very interesting but it'll all come down to how it's mechanic works. The balance between realistic and playable could be tricky, get that wrong and the game will fail right at the start. One to keep an eye on though.

You missed Empyrean. I almost feel dirty mentioning it I've been so disappointing with its development over the years but it has recently had a massive facelift and expansion to game play. For years you were stuck in a single star system and no real story line to follow, now they have expanded it to possibly hundreds of star systems and an extensive story line. In addition there is a major mod for the game, which drastically revamps the story and game mechanics basically making a second game adding that much more to do and explore. Sadly due to years of neglect the multiplayer base is sparse at best but it may pick back up with these new releases.

For example, star citizen has 6 dof controls with pitch, yaw, roll, heave, sway, and surge; where as in even online it is nothing like that and you pretty much dont even control the ship) for each game. The flight model is very important as you are flying around a ton and the flight model can have a major impact on the game. But nope there does seem to be a repeated pattern of gathering , attack then falling back. It’s probably why enthusiasm has drained some what to race out to rescue . For me it would make it more fun or appealing for them not only to attack the space station but anything else round be it capital ship , fleet carriers etc not that I have 1. Many space games are centered around fighter type craft. I'm missing some type of game that emulates you being the captain of a ship, executing ponderous manoeuvres, sending out troopers, launch fighters, negotiate deals, pursue other diplomatic missions, etc etc. There once was a game called Battle Cruiser 3000 that attempted this, though the execution was rather poor. Then there was Artemis as a multiplayer option, but the scope of that game was rather limited.

FYI Eve Online does that. Something this review didn't clarify - all the ships you see in this video in the (not very new) trailer footage are flyable, from frigates somewhat over 100m in largest dimension to carriers launching squadrons of fighters and 13-18 km long titans with skyscraper-sized guns. On the other hand, it doesn't look and feel as immersive as in many other games on this list. I've been playing it casually for several years and absolutely enjoyed it, but the nickname "spreadsheets in space" is completely true. The trailers used here are cinematic, not gameplay-like. Also, it's a heavily PVP-oriented MMO, with less diplomatic missions and more ganking.

As usual, more issues are coming up but the progress currently being done is good indication that server meshing is under way. Of course one has to assume that even if that's the case, gen 12 or any of the countless other back end techs will hold up progress from there. By then we may very well be looking at a release of Unreal 6 and who knows what that is going to do in terms of dated graphics. I will say that the confirmed direction salvage is currently going for FPS gameplay is extremely sad. Using beams to hoover up metal ship "skins" (not cosmetics) to use to repair your own ships with another beam gun sounds so uninspired I'm about to drop all interest. And now that's been said, I'm sure if I look at a few more screenshots of the game I'll be wanting to load back in anyways.

Lots of great Sci FI Space games in 2022. Was excited to see that Everspace 2 EA is on GamePass!

IMHO, Homeworld could quite well play in the universe of EVE Online.

A game concept I'd love to see is basically the opening mission of HW Cataclysm except you're a mercenary fleet so you pick your side. You could pick up missions from boards/NPCs or drop into active conflict, pick a side and wade in. Perhaps you're a combat fleet and directly aid in the battle, perhaps you're a mining fleet and provide resources or maybe you're a ship making fleet and sell reinforcements to the highest bidder. In an MMO it'd prolly be something like EVE by way of Homeworld.

Starsector is another brilliant space game. Yes it’s 2D. But it’s still a good game.

A shame not to see any mention of Hardspace: Shipbreaker - It's an EVA based game like Boundary but based around the idea of breaking down starships and scrapping them to pay off a billion-dollar debt that you start the game with. - Currently in Steam early access.

@@npc6817 but it also has larger updates coming out in 2022 such as updates to the story, new ships, and new mechanics. half of the games on this list have been already released but are mentioned because of the content updates. (although elite dangerous is going to crap and at this pace its going to die out)

Everspace 2 is almost perfect but they have the enemies level with you meaning leveling up just results in looong bullet sponge battles.

I've played Star Citizen, Elite Dangerous, No Man's Sky, Eve Online, and Space Engineers, and enjoyed all of them from time to time. In fact, I was just playing Star Citizen a couple of hours ago. All great games (I haven't played Eve Online a lot, but seems pretty good so far) that I will continue to play as the mood hits. Great to hear the Everspace 2 is on Gamepass! Going to check that out starting tomorrow!

Star Citizen is awesome. It is raising the bar beyond the limits... wait til server meshing is achieved... everyone that plays online multiplayer games will owe S.C. a HUGE thank you because it is going to change online gaming forever.

Very nice overview, thanks a lot. I wonder if you never tried Dual Universe, or didn't like it. Despite it being in Alpha, I spent some good 3.000 hours in it and have seen the most amazing things people have built with voxels and coded in LUA. Steep learning curve, tons of features missing, but absolutely worth dumping countless hours into it. :)
