As a black guy, the thing I appreciated most in that movie was that cop Roth answered to. Too many movies at the time portrayed their black characters as forgettable and disposable...I love Heat as much as the next guy, but what happened to the driver (i get it, it's played like a real tragedy but the guy never really had a great stand out moment) was very common in those days. But in Reservoir Dogs, my guy isn't only dope as hell but he's actually schooling the white guy on how it's done. I've always appreciated Tarantino movies for things like that, and he's given me many heroes of color to root for in his movies that are true standouts.

I kind of liked it, but I get what you mean. Weirdly the comics, both one and two, are even more mean spirited and heartless. They actually *are* about how all the people trying to be heroes are stupid, insane and pathetic. The first movie is miles better than the comic it's based on, and even the second one improves upon its source material.

The Blob is definitely one of the best remakes. Frank Darabont always makes sure that no one is safe in his films. The 80s Blob is great, yeah. I was absolutely floored when one of the twins died. Like, usually kids are safer than safe in movies, very rare for them to die. In the Blob? Nope. Keeps introducing characters only to kill them off, every action scene is basically the "red wedding" from GoT. Craig S. Zahler's movies are pretty mean-spirited. I love them, but gosh darn are they dark. The Mist was mean-spirited. I hated the twist, it felt needlessly cruel after everything prior.

Sono Sion's S*icide Club is a good movie that's also mean spirited. The third act betrays the main detective character in a way that has almost no foreshadow and it doesn't get any better for any characters. (i love the t*rture song-performance, bur is really sadistic and long) . Your point about reservoir dogs is something i haven't consciously considered but i felt very much on the first watch when i was 13. I loved that scene and other people tought i was feigning it to seem mean but i felt exactly what you described.

Someone already quite rightly pointed out "Kick-Ass 2", so I noticed that there's a trend with sequels that either got more cynical than their predecessors or just lacked the heart from the first one, making the mean parts stick out even more. Thinking of "Kingsman 2" and "Dumb and Dumber To" here. It's especially bad for comedies. "Hangover 3" is bizarre in that regard: it's not a retread of the original, like the 2nd one is, but a weirdly sinister and humorless story that's tonally inconsistent with that world. It ramps up the protagonists' unlikability to 11 and in the end even kind of makes fun of the audience for not wanting this to be another wedding story (I think Todd Philipps even said that this mockery was the intent - now that's spiteful!)

Funny story about Blair Witch. My sister rented it when it came out with the intent to scare me. It was the last 5 minutes where the lead character is going into the basement of the empty house to find her male friend, but my parents came home and our dad came in. Ofc he asked what we were watching and we were like “Shhhhhhhh!!!,” still engulfed by the movie. Eventually the camera turns to reveal the male friend standing in a dark corner facing the wall after a scuffle. I’m scared shitless. Then my dad asks if he’s taking a piss and i just lost it. My sister was so mad he ruined it and i was making it worse with my non-stop laughing. Sister: 0, Dad: 1

My wife and I are huge horror fans and you named a lot of films we love like Funny Games and Eden Lake. I think horror as a genre has moved away from the happy or hopeful endings of 90s and early 2000s horror. So much in the world is so bleak and fucked up, its a reflection and a reminder that not everything works out and not everything is always going to be ok. Black Mirror episodes and films like Vivarium brought about interesting responses to the shared trauma of the pandemic.

To me, there were no satisfying emotional pay-offs for anything happening. A genuinely scary kids movie is fine as long as it has its heart at the right place. But nothing gave me that sense of connection in "Monster House". Particularly the origin of the house feels cruel with no release of any kind. That's what makes it mean-spirited in a non-enjoyable way for me. I couldn't get into it as a kid and rewatching it years later didn't change much. In contrast to other movies named here, I can sort of see the appeal of "Monster House", so I hope you enjoyed it! Have you ever read Dan Harmon's letter about the movie? It's entertaining no matter how you feel about the film.

One of the most mean-spirited stories I've ever come across is The Brigands of Rattleborge, a screenplay by S. Craig Zahler (not surprising if you've seen Bone Tomahawk). There is a point in the script where it devolves, and every subsequent page becomes vile and depressing. It makes Oldboy feel like summer camp in comparison, which I guess is fitting since Park Chan Wook was attached to direct the movie at some point.

Coming up with good examples of movies with heart by your definition is difficult because a certain amount of that should be included in all good stories. But when thinking about mean-spirited movies/shows that balance out the nastiness, I had to think of a lot of Britcoms! "Blackadder" for instance is nasty and mean-spirited throughout but you feel the frustration of the main characters, even if they're mean or stupid. I think a lot of British comedy films and shows feature that amount of cynicism... and interestingly, most of the ones that are forgotten or put on the "10 worst sitcoms of all time" lists, are the ones that are TOO mean and didn't include that kind of heart. Wrapping up: I think "The Cable Guy" is underrated and has enough heart to balance the nastiness, but audiences weren't prepared to see Carrey like that yet. And "The Last Jedi" is an example of a movie that's not heartless but spiteful towards its fans and set an annoying trend (that other franchises followed) of "Oh, you wanted to see THIS? Well, you'll get two minutes of it, then it's gone and we'll serve you something inferior, depressing and boring. Subverted your expectations, huh?"

2:06 applies to a recent oscar script I read, but it was the anti-hero always getting away with the most implausible stuff... and the resolution in the end wasn't really a resolution cause the antagonists could easily legally get out the situation the anti-hero put them in to end the movie. It was like to the degree of the anti-hero knowing the plot. If there's anything that gets to me in a movie, it's that.

I noticed in many of your pitches you take alot of inspiration from Tarantino. Taking the point of view of (what we think is) a nobody and making that character be a plot point. It's these kinds of story beats that make a movie rewatchable. One of the many reasons why Tarantino is my 2nd fav director(just a tad behind Hitchcock). P.S. Your shirts always reminds me of a script i wrote when i was 12. Of Ace Ventura smoking pot to be able to communicate with animals. And is the son of Navy seal retired vet and former governer Jesse Ventura. Ace is always told he won't ever amount of anything. Until one day he is exposed to extra terrestrial pot that gives him the ability to communicate with outer space animals. An invasion happens. With the CIA are trying to get Ace because he smoked all the alien pot in Area 51. But Ace is on the run because he thought he's gonna get locked up for life for breaking in. It's an invasion movie. With the heart of the story being about reconnection between a father who just misses his deceased wife. And wants their son to continue their legacy. Not knowing that Ace will always land on his feet because they raised him right. And Ace seeing his dad more than just over bearing boomer. But also someone that just wants the world to see his son for the great person he is. Ace Ventura: Space Detective.

i also like reservoir dogs a lot and i usually say its my favorite tarantino too. i saw it when i was 10 yo alone at night and the ear scene caught me off guard. it was pretty shocking and i didnt get the point of the scene. but i saw from dusk till dawn the same night and that was way worse for me as a kid, the suspense when the vampires reveal themselves and the first impact is over was soo insane, i didnt even know it was a horror movie. funny you mentioned martyrs since that movie was the worst for me.. it feels mean spirited but it comes around in the end for me but it took me 3 viewings to even finish it, so i watched the mean stuff 3 times. i would never watch hostel tho.

Logan to me is the king of mean spirited movies. Take a charismatic, charming protagonist, and spend the whole film with him as a wheezing, coughing, slowly dying mess. It's a great film, and I never ever want to see it again.

A good mean spirited movie that came to mind is the Korean film Old Boy, as for a movie with heart also from Korea would be the Host

Martyrs, while deliberately disturbing, is in no way mean spirited because the most disturbing qualities of the narrative are also the most strangely touching qualities of the story, when viewed through the prism of the evolution of the two main characters and how they relate to each other…if that makes any sense.

Exactly why I singled it out here! You hit the nail on the head. Plus, I really think any movie that ends with the bad guy getting a huge dose of "GET FUCKED IDIOT" can't be totally heartless.

James Gunn's early stuff is quite mean-spirited, sour and angry (still is to an extent, but one can see the tone evolving and softening). One of the best examples is his "Humanzee" short and of course "Super". I find that movie well-made, with great performances and direction but also thought it's incredibly disgusting, going way too far, totally confusing what the message or emotional stakes are and just aggressively sneering throughout. It's an interesting film for sure but I never got how people can enjoy the experience of watching it. 3:47 No wonder Gunn let the director of "Wolf Creek" film his Belko Experiment script, if they share those edgelord sensibilities 😂

@@Uptomyknees True, though I'd say that style works well with The Suicide Squad (I know you said that movie shouldn't exist in the first place) and to a degree with Slither. It's frustrating because he is a talented, impressive and inspiring filmmaker, especially considering how he completely worked his way up from the bottom and is now literally at the top creatively. Hoping for the best but expecting the worst for Superman: Legacy.

I always thought (and continuing to do so) that there was one actually "real" scene in Audition - when we see a guy in the bag. It is a main character trapped there and the rest of the movie is his brain trying to rationalize his actions (first half) and come up with a fantasy happy ending to escape into it (finale). Basically japanese version of Lost Highway, where the only real scene is the guy in prison getting to the electric chair.

Topher Grace insults in American Ultra felt a bit mean spirited, I obviously don't know if that was the writer (who's that anyway? ;)) the actor, the director, or the editor really going for it but somebody really went for it, I feel.

I think Hereditary is mean spirited. Not to say it’s not well done. But the fact that, when you take away the supernatural elements, it’s really just a movie about generational trauma and tragedy successfully destroying an entire family. The entire community around them is literally planning on the family’s downfall. All the coping mechanisms they are given are just literal poison that makes their afflictions worse. All the trust between the characters just breaks down by the end. All the emotional hang-ups from the past are confirmed. It felt like I was watching a cam-rip of a family member beating their kids. Just brutal and mean. Well shot. Very memorable. Not saying it’s poorly done. Just feels mean-spirited.

If I may ask, how would you say Micheal Bay’s filmography falls in the realm of “mean-spirited?” Cause my first thought was that most of his films fit that description, but there’s a little doubt in that idea floating around in my head.

I found Evil Dead Rise to be mean-spirited. Not a bad movie at all, but the idea of the goodly single mom bringing in her down-on-her-luck sister, becoming possessed and murdering most of her children, is pretty cruel. Sorta compound that with how, of all the Evil Dead movies, EDR takes itself the most serious (relatively) and, yeah...oddly cruel
