India reluctantly participated in 2009 and the results were disastrous. In maths it was second last and in science it was last. Students of 8 grade weren't able to tell a fraction greater than 2/7......it's just media hype and branding that India is good at maths. After 2009 they don't even participated in Pisa saying the results were bad because of "cultural and linguistic bias" . But this doesn't explain why Japan China and South Korea perform much better than India because they too have cultural and linguistic differences more than India. India is the second largest English speaking country.

China doesn't actually do better as a whole, they only test in the 4 most educated cities, so the results there are misleading, as the countryside does much worse.

Competition will likely make the participant better than without competition. And East Asians as a whole (Confucian ethics) thrive on competition (meritocracy) since ancient times. So "cultural bias" could be right in a sense. haha

It participated for the first time in 2012, each time the result comes out caused a lot of conflict even though it was not Vietnam's fault, weirdness or miracle? Anyway, it is an unprecedented exception for the participating countries, they need to study more about the case of Vietnam. This year too, the economic gap makes it different

@@RoylabStats You probably didn't know that, about 30 years ago, only about Asian universities were in the top 500. But after 30 years there were more than 100 Asian universities and this rate is increasing. In addition, in Asia currently in many fields of technology, Asian students have chosen the US as the best study abroad destination of this industry. We have had better technology schools than in the US, like schools in Singapore, China, Japan or Korea.

All of the countries in the rankings have historically had education and examination systems. Europe implemented modern education from the Renaissance after the Middle Ages. Northeast Asia (Sinosphere), such as China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam, took officials as an exam and had an education system since ancient times. Although Singapore is a Southeast Asian country, 80% of its population is of Northeast Asian descent. Although Vietnam is geographically Southeast Asian, it is homogeneous with Northeast Asia by accepting Chinese social systems like Japan and Korea. There is not a single country on this list that has not had education in the past and has started doing so since the 20th century. This is an example of how important culture and history are. Rice farming is much more difficult than wheat farming, and requires a lot of planning, diligence, and patience. In rice farming, missing a planned time by one day ruins the year, and requires more than 10 hours of work each day. In a rice-farming society, if you are not diligent, you cannot survive or get married, so most of them are diligent. In the current education system, sincerity is more important than genius, and this may have affected East Asians' ability to study well. Moreover, it is very important for countries that have adopted Confucianism from China to respect their parents. In Confucian culture, parents do a lot for their children, so it is natural for children to obey their parents and not disappoint them.

Interesting stats but very misleading graphic representation. If you are not looking carefully, you might assume that the length of a bar is proportional to score, but this is not the case as the bars do not start at zero which is very misleading. For example, at the very start Hungary is listed last (1464) and Japan is first (1629). This score for Japan is roughly 11% higher than that of Hungary, but the bar shown for Japan is nearly 250% the length of that of Hungary (!) Also - for absolutely no good reason, the scale actually changes throughout the video. The scale contracts meaning that a constant score would be shown to be decreasing in size. This is highly misleading as it gives the appearance of overall worsening scores. For example, at the start of the animation Canada has a score of 1596 and at the end it has a score of 1550. This is a drop of about 3%, but due to the false zero AND the changing scale, Canada's end bar graphic is only about 50% of the length it started at.

Thank you for precious comment. I admit that this graph is scientifically bad graph, specifically in this PISA video I moved start point and changed scale. Main concept of this channel's video is showing rank changes using animated graph with time series data. If I wish to make video for academic purpose I should use standard deviation and decide whether the differences of mean score of each country are statistically siginificant or not. But please understand my circumstance that I should make video for many people can enjoy. All 20 countries listed on screen has been established very good education system. In 2018, there are 59 countries outside of screen. Canada have excellent education system. As you know, all people have different feeling about Canada's rank. Some can say "Great", other can say "Enough" the other can say "disappointing". But I am sure many people will think Canada have been educated their children very well. I am not satisfy with my current video, I am trying to make better looking video. I promise I will make more academic and sophisticated video suitable for researchers and educators in near time. I am really thank you for comment!

I´m a bit saddened to see Finland beat out by the Asian countries. Not that I have anything against them, they´re beautiful countries that have implemented some really good educational policies to earn the scores that they got, but I don´t want the best way of educating your children to be working them to death with mountains of essays, math problems, and facts about every subject. Although there is a bit of hope, I actually looked there the PISA insights on their latest results(2018). In the report they show a nice chart where they compare Reading performance and total learning time per week(They only show Reading performance for some reason). China wins out with a score of 555 and what looks like about 58 hours per week. Remarkable however Finland is an outlier on the left side of the chart with the least amount of learning time(about 36 hours a week) and it has a higher score than most countries at 520. I did a bit of math and for every hour a week that China spends in educating they get 9.568 points in the PISA, however for Finland it´s 14.44. This shows that the Finnish system is significantly more efficient and that at that rate they would only need to spend 3 more hours in school to surpass China´s score. Although The scores most likely wouldn't work like that, ti shows that Finland is still doing something very right in their education system, even if they only got 10th place on the most recent assessment, down from their former 1st place ranking in 2008.

China's also got 590 and 591 in science and math, compared to Finland's 522 and 507 respectively. It's also capped at 600, so diminishing results likely apply. Finland does strike a healthier work-life balance, though, imo. Thankfully, mental health has been a growing concern is east Asia.

I think the most common mistake is to judge China by developed countries standards, I dont know why, I mean China's GDP per capita is still just 1/6 of most developed countries, and the current Chinese workforce is only the 1st generation of being actually literate, everybody has to work harder to catch up to the rest of the world, thats the societal agreement deep inside our conscience, we can't afford the luxury of living in a relaxed environment, at least not for another 2 or 3 generations, just like how the Americans in 1900-1960s worked extremely hard, now Americans dont have to and they get to enjoy the benefits.

@@father88888 : Virtually majority of ethnic Chinese that live in Taiwan and Singapore come from Fujian and Guangdong, and of course Hong Kong and Macao in the past were of Guangdong province, and majority of them do extremely well, so i don't see the cheating here.

@happy mass shooting usa ; It is fact that the smartest Chinese since the ancient time come from Eastern China(Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui) and they're much more smarter than the jews. Eastern China produce more people that are extremely good in science and thinking compared to Southern China, but of course the Southern Chinese are on average more capable in some areas like business and making money. (note : just an average generalization) One more generalization perhaps can be true to certain extent is about war, while the Eastern Chinese(Wu speaking Chinese) on average are mellow, but they are better at being the commanders due to their quick wits, while Southern Chinese(are usually more ferocious in battlefield and make a better soldiers, but not many good commanders) save perhaps for the Hakka people which usually excel in both(commanding and fighting), but the Hakka on average are not good in business or making money, hence most are less wealthy compared to other Han Chinese. It will be hard to find people who excel in virtually everything, even though some do exist.
