I absolutely adore my ESV Study Bible. I also adore the Thomson Chain Reference Bible because it connects scripture without commentary. It is my only KJV Bible and refreshing to go back to. I basically stick with the NASB, NKJ and ESV Bibles. I totally agree with your assessment of the Life Application Bible. In the end, we need to rely on the Holy Spirit to show us truth when we delve in the precious Word of God.

I'm a Lutheran (LCMS) so my primary study Bible is the Lutheran Study Bible ESV from Concordia Publishing House. It's a great resource from my theological tradition. I do also use a NLT Life Application Study Bible and I must say I like it a lot. The NLT is nice to read and I find it along with the notes can be very illuminating for my understanding! Very interested in that CSB Holy Land Illustrated Study Bible as well! The images look nice and it looks like a good resource.

Great list! Here are a few more to add at least as honorable mentions: * NIV Archaeological Study Bible. It has solid information on culture, history, and of course archaeology. * CSB Apologetics Study Bible. Good material in defense of the faith. * ESV Systematic Theology Study Bible. Although the ESV Study Bible is also at heart a systematic theology study Bible, the ESV Systematic Theology Study Bible is more tightly focused on systematic theology (though if I could only pick one study Bible it'd have to be the ESV Study Bible which is easily one of my top 3 favorite study Bibles of all time).

I noticed that you appear to prefer the NIV. I have a "Study" Bible in the KJV, NKJV, ESV, NASB, and more recently the CSB. I only recently purchased the NIV large print reader, to make it easier for me to follow along with a pastor/teacher I listen to. I was saved in a King James church so it remains my #1 preference, followed by the NKJ. I appreciate looking up verses, words, and topics in each of the translations to give me a more rounded view presented by the various notes. I appreciate the many translations, but I must admit that I am a creature of habit.

@@franklopez2744 First, we need to know the meaning of the Bible in one sentence. Here it is. “God’s plan to redeem the world through Jesus Christ means eternal life and abundant life and a transformed life for all who believe.” That’s the Bible in a nutshell. The next thing to do is to figure out the meaning of each individual book of the Bible in a nutshell, in light of the meaning of the Bible in one sentence. For example, Matthew. The main point of Matthew is “The uniqueness of Jesus Christ and his life and ministry and message, and death and resurrection prove that God is with us and is a message that should be shared with the world.” Notice how that fits in with the overall theme of the Bible. And each passage of Matthew has to fit in with the overall theme of Matthew. So, when you preach about the virgin birth, you’re preaching about the uniqueness of the virgin birth, and how it shows that God is with us. When you preach about the temptation of Jesus, you’re preaching about his unique encounter and victory over the devil, and that it anticipates his victory over the devil on the cross. When you preach about the sermon on the Mount, you’re talking about his unique teaching. And so forth. Hopefully the study Bibles will help you figure out the main theme of the other 65 Bible books. But otherwise I recommend the book by Gordon Fee and Doug Stuart “How to read the Bible for all it’s worth.”

I think what you’re doing is great. Sometimes I read the Bible straight through without notes, sometimes I consult the notes, and sometimes I’ll read all the notes. They are all legit ways of spending time with God. And it’s OK if it takes a little bit longer to get through the Bible, God is going to use everything you’re learning to transform you and equip you to do his work.

I love the NIV’s readability, and its dynamic equivalence to the Greek and Hebrew. I have been reading the 1984 NIV for 38 years, I have memorized out of it, I have grown in the Lord in that translation, that is the translation that God has used in my life. The 2011 NIV is better in some verses, but I’m a 1984 guy. If the ESV had been around in 1985 when I got saved, I probably would’ve chosen that. Head to head in the places where they differ, I usually prefer the ESV. But in Bible study, when my wife reads her ESV, it’s usually pretty close to the NIV, and when it differs, we always look at the Greek UBS 5 and the Hebrew to see which is better.

@@sassybanjo3586 that verse doesn’t appear in the earliest Greek manuscripts, and only in one Greek manuscript before the 14th century. It first appears in Latin translations in the late third and early fourth centuries, and it appears to have come from a scribal note that Jerome had written along the side of 1 John 5. New Testament scholars today are largely unanimous that it was an accidental addition in the TR, not an original verse.
