In this video I try out a new epoxy for gloss coats. Greenlight Surf Supply now has their own house brand of epoxy and it's awesome. Goes on super flat with no ripples and minimal brush strokes. No final sanding required!

Great video Andrew! I've used greenlight's resin for my last 3 boards and have been very happy with it. Like other epoxies, you will never get that unsanded gloss back if you decide to sand and polish it (or at least I have not had success yet). Excited to your other epoxy research.

Here for the paddle board. Although I'm not a fan of them, I liked the ride sessions and how it came out.

Have you ever mixed West System part A with Resin Research Hardener? Those are the only ones I have left. Before I make a disaster, I wanted to ask you. Ha,ha. I had mixed Resin Research Part A with any epoxy Hardener and had no problems. I just got West System since it saved me an hour trip to the coast to shop for it.

I prefer Greenlight epoxy. Only drawback has been their shipping times over the past couple of months. Brutally long. Good review!

I've had a bad experience with Resin Research too. Try the Total Boat. I was really pleased with that.

Hey Andrew , really enjoy your videos. I’ve been using resin research for my wing board builds , only done two so far and learning loads. Coming into our uk winter now and wanted to know if I can still laminate in cooler temperatures and then just do a post cure when finished.It would be tricky trying to heat my garage space😎

Awesome review- thanks! I used Resin Research for my latest kayak build, it's super easy to laminate with and has a nice low viscosity... but I did end up with a bunch of those little low spots in the final fill coats. They're not really super visible, only cosmetic, but enough to bug me just a bit :-p Might go for the Greenlight or Total Boat epoxy for the next one.

I'm from the EU and sicomin surf clear evo is by far the best resin you can buy!

Agree! So Stoked with Sicomin surf clear stuff, especially with usind Aditive SA300 and EP217 for filler and gloss coats.

Great info and food for thought... I'm planning on making a glider, probably xps 11footer something like a Christenson Chris Craft... what about water based epoxies. Sherwin Williams has 3 I looked at: Armorseal 8100, 1000HS, and 1K. These are floor coatings, mainly, but I gotta wonder if they'd work with glass mat on a board, too. Any thoughts?

Is that a 1:1 resin:hardener ratio or a 2:1?

I wonder if there is a difference between the fast and slow hardeners in terms of gloss and flow. I've been using entropy with the slow hardener. Viscosity looks similar to when you were pushing epoxy around in this video and it does come out very glossy. I went with slow because I like having a bit of extra working time, though timing the tape zipping can be awkward (longer wait) and I suppose there is more wet time for bugs to land on it.

I have used both the fast and slow from greenlights brand, and found them to have pretty much identical viscosity and finish. No idea with entropy epoxy though.
@greenlightsurfsupply6613

Same viscosity fast or slow... we recommend using fast with seal coats / gloss coats. Plenty of time to lay them out since it's a really quick process and the quicker it cures the less potential for dust, debris, or bugs to get in there...

Totally, glosscoats are more finicky so I wanted to make a video about it but this resin will laminate perfectly.

@@AndrewWorkshop thanks! another question if you dont mind, im on my second surfboard build at the moment and was wondering how you do to get the fiberglass weave pattern to go away once u finish laminating, are gloss coats suppose to hide them??
@AndrewWorkshop
@AndrewWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
@@jeffryhardy601 The weave will disappear once you apply the hot/gloss coats. Unless you get some areas with extra layer of glass you will notice those areas will be a slightly darker color but in terms of the weave yes it will go transparent.

Makers Muse brought me here then I notice you're doing composites. What? Sub = instant. I wanna make jetboards and a personal ultralight quad copter. Just ordered an I2R 8 CNC router for mold and press making.

Write them and see what they can do but shipping to Canada is killer for just about everything, not to mention duty.

You say "hot coat" several times but Ive yet to find what that means. What is a hot coat?
@bp3145
@bp3145 2 жыл бұрын
My understanding is the hotter and drier the atmosphere you do the final coat in it will harden quicker and look more glossy. I’m not an expert though. Just don’t put it in direct sun like sun cure. I did that once and got big gas bubbles😄
@Surfmus
@Surfmus Жыл бұрын
Is terminology. Is the State we say hotcoat. In other countries they say filler coat. Nothing to do with "hotter and dryer atmosphere."
@mickduprez9598
@mickduprez9598 Жыл бұрын
with a pu resin you could add more catalyst to make the resin set quicker which would prevent the resin flowing off the board and giving a thicker finish coat for sanding. The 'hot' part is that the pu resin gets very hot due to the chemical reaction if left in bulk in the mixing cup (due to extra catalyst), you have to get it on quickly!
@robertcain3426
@robertcain3426 Ай бұрын
The terminology of 'hot coat' comes from polyester resin (PE) laminates - hot coat in the US and filler coat in Australia. The 'hot' in hot coat comes from the fact that filler or hot coat resin is specially formulated with a higher (hotter) value of added promoter to make it set quickly. The terminology has just been carried over into epoxy laminates. Cheers
