I just bought this watch a few weeks ago. It was a replacement to my Rado, which was stolen when my hotel was looted following a devastating typhoon that hit Siargao Island, Philippines, in December 2021. I absolutely love it. I wasn't even shopping for a Tissot, but there it was in the display shelf. I use it everyday and don't even realize I'm wearing it most of the time.

I got the green Gentleman for my wedding last year. I love it so much, I got a second, black dial on leather version. AND I got a quartz version for both of my groomsmen for my wedding and they both wear them regularly to this day. Its one of my primary daily wearers, and it's holding up very Well! The movement is still running at about -2s per day. I have recommended the Gentleman to almost anyone who's looking for a GADA watch. The 21mm lug width is a bonus for me personally. I have large wrists so sometimes a 20mm bracelet can feel a bit petit on me. But sometimes a 22mm bracelet just feels like a tank track around your wrist. The 21mm is right in the sweet spot for someone my size for that casual/GADA style daily wearer.

Tissot achieved a rare feat that not even Rolex can pull out. They manufactured a watch with a sensible size and managed to make it look larger and chunkier than it is. Whereas Rolex, as we have recently seen, can only make their watches look bigger by increasing their actual size 🙂

I own this watch. The first 2 months it was running at 0 sec/day. Now It runs +1sec/day. Stunning watch for the price. I handwind it every day because I only wear it for 8 hours/day, and that is not enough to keep it wound. It catches the light beautifully and will turn heads. But I scratched the band and bezel, so now I have to figure out how to polish them again. :)
@docmarioce31
@docmarioce31 2 жыл бұрын
Respecfully, once you wind an automatic self-winding watch once with approximately 40 turns, you won't have to wind it again unless (in the specfic case of this watch) you take it out of your wrist for more that 80 hrs. Every movement of your wrist makes the rotor spin in the movement and winds the watch constantly. No need to wind it daily.

As someone who really loves watches but is on an incredibly tight budget, I was looking for a nice, affordable automatic watch to replace my relatively boring, sub 400$ Seiko Quartz Chronograph. Thanks for the review. My view is that this Tissot Powermatic, despite a slightly disappointing bracelet (money has to be saved somewhere) is a great offer from an historically relevant brand. For most people, including me, makes more sense buying this watch and saving a good few thousand Euros rather than buying an Omega AquaTerra or a now discontinued Rolex OP39. Given the price, you don’t feel so precious about it and can enjoy the watch in most circumstances and if you scratch the case when changing the strap, it does not ruin your week the same as a scar on your Rolex would. And if you’re lucky, it will keep time fully within COSC spec for Seiko money + services every 5 years won’t require a full month saving to pay for.

00:18 Buying substitutes for the timepiece you really want is always the most expensive option. You end up with the watch you really want eventually and all the place-holders you bought along the way. This is a great option if one is able to buy one watch and walk away. But then, that's not what watch enthusiasts do. Very handsome watch.

@@DirtFather407 Not everyone wants to save up for a watch. Some people would rather spend that money on literally anything else. Hi Kevin. Do I understand correctly that you have both a Gentleman and an Aqua Terra? I really want the AT but the price tag is giving me a lot of pause, so looking at options like this as alternatives. But if you own both, what makes you go to one over the other (and in what situations)? If you don't mind sharing, it would be helpful feedback. Thanks!
@caktaylor
@caktaylor 3 жыл бұрын
@@justthisguyyouknow42 Please keep in mind I bought the AT used in 2016. Prices were much less unreasonable in 2016 compared to today. I don't think I would pay today's prices for an AT, especially a new AT. Mine is the style with the vertical teak dial and the dial is grey. It has a very different character from my bright, blue dialed Gentleman. When I want something more subdued, I go with the AT. When I want something less subdued, the Gentleman is more appropriate. It should be obvious, but the AT is significantly better finished than the Gentleman, particularly the bracelet and clasp. If you'd like to go a bit upmarket, I suggest looking at Longines like the Conquest, Conquest Classic, Master Collection, etc. They now occupy the space that Omega abandoned, and they make great entry level luxury watches. (They aren't quite as good as Omegas were from, say 2000-2010, but they are still quite good.)

I picked up a black dial version on the leather deployant strap as I didn’t fancy the non adjustable bracelet with all that shine going on. The reason I bought it was that I was interested in giving the ETA movement a go and checking on its characteristics. Mine runs at +1s/day after about 6 months which is up there with my Rolex watches, better than my Sub for example. The power reserve easily goes past 70 hours and the antimagnetic properties are cool for a watch at this price point. I’ve got a medium sized wrist and I’d say this watch wears true to 40mm which is, after all, biggish for a watch in this style. Overall I’m very happy with this piece as an everyday beater that you won’t care about picking up marks and scratches. It works very well on the strap which is good quality and can be adjusted easily on the fly. Don’t expect JLC or Patek finishing guys, you get what you pay for, but it’s nice to have a display caseback and sapphire front and back. I’d say it’s punching way above its weight. Maybe they should also release a 38mm ‘Tissot Lady’ version. It’s a good job it doesn’t say ‘Gentleman’ on the dial or caseback which would be a bit naff. I’ve also read that this watch can be fitted with a 22mm after market strap no problem.

The PRX was just too chunky for my taste; I really prefer the round appearance of the Gentleman. It came down to the auto vs quartz movements, and again, the thinner quartz model won out. (I have thick wrists, and an issue with watches that don't slip under my shirt cuffs.) Accuracy has been impressive, within about one second per month. I got it with Tissot's leather strap, which keeps it light and thin and looks very classy. You have to be happy when the one you like the best is also the least expensive - I may get a second one, with green or silver dial (tough choice), and still spend less than a PRX would have cost me. The only downside I can think of is the lack of an anti-reflective coating on the sapphire crystal - I'd have been happy to pay a bit more for that feature.

My first watch was a Tissot that my Dad bought me when I was 12 in the 70s. I still have it and it is still fine. You take a top down approach. I however look at it from the other side as a bottom up approach. Before spending any money on such "brands" as Wellington, Vincero, etc., rather invest more money and get a Tissot, Certina or Longines. The two first ones I wear for example in Central America, where I could encounter a spontaneous ownership transfer any day.

Yup. My first watch that wasn't a kids watch is a Swatch Chronograph (I was like 10 or sth). It is hella old and I'm pretty sure the chrono movement (quartz) is broken. Recently found it again under some junk. Gona take it to my watch guy to get it fixed (even though financially it would be cheaper to buy a new one). My next watch that I got was a Tissot as well. I never really wore watches but 2-3 years ago I started to wear them again. Switched out the quartz movement for a better one since it broke too. My watch guy fitted a Nomos leather strap to it and now it looks even nicer. Now I have a Junghans Max Bill and a Werenbach Mach 33 as well. Werenbach is a microbrand from Zürich. The dials of their watches are made from the booster shell of Soyuz rockets that have actually been to space. Right now all my watches are quartz but I am saving up to get a Nomos Tangomat next year.

My friends were surprised I did you don’t half to spend a lot of money on a watch there is a lot of brands out there that are reasonably priced and good looking .😉

I’ve owned my Tissot Gentleman for about a month now. It’s been great. As she stated in the review, it’s very versatile. It’s a good looking, no frills, understatedly elegant watch, suitable for almost every occasion.

Spot on! I bought this watch with a silver dial on a leather strap. It is indeed a gorgeous dial. It is also the most accurate "non chronometer" watch that I own. It is definitely a tremendous value. HOWEVER, I bought it because it was only 40 mm. But the prominent polished bezel makes the watch look much larger. I have a 165 mm wrist, this watch is a bit of a stretch. But I will never part with it because it is just so beautiful to look at.

I think this watch’s natural competition is from within Tissot itself. I like the Ballade as well, with its COSC certification, but I prefer the blue dial and modest luminescence that are available on the Gentleman. As I understand it, the Powermatic 80 movement is pretty accurate without the chronometer rating, and the Oyster-style bracelet on the Gentleman would suit my needs just fine. I think the Gentleman ticks the most boxes for me.

I noticed the time slider bar is highlighted in segments, and a time index in the description. That’s a very nice touch. I’ve not seen that on any other vid. I wonder why that is so few vids have that. And of course, she is the consummate presenter of watches.

I am wearing a Certina Diver's Watch 300 m WR, Titanium, with a similar Powermatic 80 Movement (developed by Tissot), without silicium hair spring. The average deviation measured after three months is +0.6 sec/day, which is excellent in my opinion.

Both are Swatch Group brands. Depending on your income level and savings time, you could get this watch now, continue to save, and sell this watch at a very minor loss down the road when you’re ready to upgrade and have an AMAZING watch during your wait. You’re essentially renting it for a couple hundred dollars. If you saves $300/month, you’d have this watch in 2.5 months. It will take you 20 months to save up for the Aqua Terra. Get the Tissot, wear it for 2 years, save for the Omega, sell the Tissot for $450, and upgrade. 1 extra month of saving, but 2 years with a great watch instead of no watch. 👍🏻

Thanks for this video. I appreciate the perspectives provided. I am impressed with the level of refinement and workmanship of this watch for its price point. I wished that you could have expanded the discussion by including the other versions of the Gentleman line such as the quartz and leather strap variants. In general, quartz watches largely are overlooked in favor of automatic movement versions. I am considering a quartz version of this watch which is half the price of the automatic version!!!!! At the quartz price point, this watch is a steal for the quality and craftsmanship. If you were to make a video about the best Swiss watch under $500, then the Gentleman in quartz would definitely be a contender.

Bought this watch a year ago second hand for around 500. I could not used to wear the bracelet so replace it with really nice leather strap. This is also great summer watch with blue/red marine nationale. Powermatic 80 is at least my watch is extremely accurate. Only minus is that polished parts are real scratch-magnets...

Jenni nice review. However, I would like you to compare the Tissot to the Christopher Ward C60 Trident. I think you will find that the 38MM and 40MM sizes that are available on the C60 are bit better that this Tissot for under $1K USD.

I have this watch for about a year now. It is AMAZING! ! It loses 3 seconds a day from day 1 and after 1 year, it is still losing 3 seconds a day. That is within COSC specs. As far as I'm concerned, it can easily compete with the Vacheron Constantin Stainless steel Overseas blue dial but that one is 21K and it does not have second hack and the 80 hours power reserve. It does have a gold rotor, but who sees the rotor when the watch is on your wrist?????
