I am required to wear a watch on my wrist at work for its functional purposes - and feel naked without one at home or on the weekend. Consequently, I have developed a personal relationship with my wrist watches. They are so much more than an article of clothing or a nice pair of shoes. Somehow, they mean more to me. For some unknown reason, I cannot imagine wearing an electronic 'smart' watch in place of my "old timey" one - they just FEEL different to me emotionally. When I am tempted to stare at my watch in public when talking to another - I simply cross my hands in front of me and hold my watch in my hand. This feeling of security I get from my personal connection with my watch comforts me somehow. I cannot explain this affection I have for them. I don't know if others feel it also. I just know that my watches are my personal friends, and I enjoy the affinity I experience towards them.

Interesting what you said about germans getting jealous easily when a colleague or a sales person wears an expensive or exclusive premium watch. I am Dutch but since 1990 I have been working in Germany, My perception is that in the Netherlands you have to justify yourself for wearing a nice, expensive watch ("You are charging me too much, that is how you've paid for that watch/car/suit etc.) whereas Germans appreciate people (even sales people) wearing luxury items or driving nice cars. Long time ago, I talked about this with a German friend. That might not always be the case imho, nonetheless an interesting argument.

Great video, Jenni. Another one is to avoid overwinding your watch. An automatic watch only needs a few winds to get it started. Overwinding puts wear on the gear train. Also, never wind it while it is on your wrist. This puts stress in the crown stem.

All interesting stuff. Where do you stand with wearing two watches, one on each wrist? For many years I've worn a 'smart' watch on my right wrist, a Garmin Fenix Pro, and a "smart" watch on my left wrist, Oris/Omega etc... I've also noticed a few other people doing this, so I'm not alone. I often get asked "Why do you wear two watches?" and my general response is that "I have two wrists..." :) Thanks for the excellent content, as always.

I knew when I returned to Toronto after several years working in NYC that I would have to re-adjust to the Canadian culture which is more discrete, less aggressive, but also has a bit of "tall poppy" element. Even knowing that, I was surprised when, at the end of a meeting with a senior recruiter, she advised me, kindly, not to wear the Cartier white gold tank with diamond bezel that was my everyday watch, as many interviewers might be jealous, and it would not serve me. In NYC, and Wall Street especially, announcing your success was expected. In Canada, it's considered offensive.

I very much appreciate your tips. I personally see that watches are well considered by what they have of heritage, fucntionality and elegance. The matter of luxury depends on the person's budget and his love of luxurious ones. BUT watches are well worn for their value as I previously mentioned.

Let me say this about watches generally... I am a great appreciator of many things: art, mechanics, micro-biology, religion, history... you get the picture. I have had the opportunity to actually hold many things in my hands like famous paintings, mechanisms that went to the moon and back, items created to sit in the body and prevent it from dying and other items that only a select few have the opportunity to actually touch. But the ONE thing that always impresses me - to the brink of tears - is a well crafted wrist watch the design of which is only to keep track of and measure the passage of time. Time - one of the things that mankind is and will always be only a casual observer. Yet, we can only discern the passage of in a completely passive manner. To actually witness a mechanical watch either opened or through an exhibition case-back is no less than magical. If I have to explain it to you - you will never understand and cannot share my experience. There are only a few 'magical' things in life that are real and tangible - things that you can touch and hold in your hands. A mechanical watch is one of them. To actually wear one on my wrist - is an extraordinary - almost supernatural experience.

I don’t even have to see it to appreciate it. I have an old pocket watch that I do love to open and watch run, but my wristwatch has a steel case back and I still love that it’s mechanical.

@@granthaller9544 You know, I purchased an old cheap watch from an antique store once. It was so delicate and beautiful I got curious as to what it looked like inside. After removing the back I had to sit down. It was complete with pearlage and blued gears. I took it to a watchmaker and he found an exhibition case back that would fit it. Of course, he warned be about the usual but the extra caution is well worth it. It 'may' be that you can procure an exhibition case-back for your watch as well. Take it to a watchmaker and see if he can affix one for you!

Just a thought about #4 : if you’re wearing a watch, you should « own » it, as in own your choice. In my opinion, if it makes you feel self conscious and you’d rather people not notice it, then the watch probably isn’t right for you. Or you’re wearing it in the wrong context (for you). And with some watches, you KNOW you are going to get some attention. So just deal with it! Of course, it doesn’t mean you should be obnoxious when noticing someone’s watch. But I really liked your video!

My long-time dentist always wore a gorgeous-but-discrete salmon-dial JLC Reverso. I may have the only one to ever compliment him on it. I think he got a bit offended when I commented that it was the perfect watch for a dentist. When he sold his practice his new wife bought him a Tag Formula1 and he put away the JLC for good. I actually had to show him used Reverso listings on a popular resellers website to make the point that his old JLC was really special. His replacement dentist, in his late 20’s, was the only person ever to compliment my Parmigiani on one of the days I happened to wear it. He was a Grand Seiko kind of guy. Also a great dentist’s watch.

Rule #2 - wear on non dominant wrist. I have high cross-dominance. I mostly do intricate stuff with my right and bullish stuff with my left (as I said, mostly, eg: shave with left, oddly) Some things either for convenience (use a mouse with left at home vs. right at work). I would swap over depending on what I'm doing but my R wrist is 7" and L wrist is 7 1/2" so swapping my watches with bracelets over to the other wrist is out.

I don't have a lot of watches, only a few. Each of my watches tell a different story - have a different history. Though I consider my watches another 'piece of jewelry' - they really are not. They don't feel like another ring, bracelet or necklace. There is something more to them. I can lose a ring or bracelet. I can misplace a treasured pair of ear rings. But NOT my watches. I guard them with my life. They are not expensive and I suppose I could replace them tangibly. But, not the memories they hold and the experiences we share. I don't know why - but I truly feel that they have a personality all of their own. Perhaps other people feel that way about other things. I feel that way about my watches.

Thanks for the fun video Jenni! I'm probably going to continue to break #4, as I've had some enjoyable conversations stem from commenting on a stranger's watch. Weird that your orthodontist reacted negatively to your compliment; you think he'd be aware that wearing one of the world's most exclusive and desired watches would be likely to draw attention. But I guess there are many owners of expensive luxury watches who are not actually collectors and therefore might not realize this. Concerning #7, no one in my workplace notices my watches, but Rolex is the one brand I'd be reluctant to wear to work. It would only take one person to see it, and the entire office would be talking about it the rest of the day.

Interesting on which wrist to wear your watch on. If I had a thicker watch, no doubt I'd wear it on my less dominant side. However, a thinner watch very much alleviates chances of banging it on something. Also, since I carry with my left hand, it makes sense to wear on my right. Cheers 🤙

That was indeed an odd encounter with the orthodontist (great results, by the way). Perhaps it had been a gift from someone close to him who had recently passed away? I had a consult recently with my cataract surgeon who asked me, "Is that a GMT?" We spent the next 5 or so minutes talking about his Speedy and other watches and my Grand Seko Katana. I know that since I subscribe to Jenni and other KZbin watch channels, I get the feeling that the world is filled with watch enthusiasts. That's not really the case, so I enjoy meeting a fellow enthusiast "in the wild" so to speak.

Thanks for another interesting video. I was interested to see whether we agreed - and we did, of course! I would add a possibly OCD preference of my own, which I have also seen expressed on watch channels - not keen on a watch worn on the wrist bone, or on the hand side of it. Why does this irritate me? Possibly I am a bad person, but still it irrtates me!

You sort of touched on this one with the leather strap but I would add "do not wear a watch that is not fit for the purpose/environment". Humidity, water, magnets etc or a dressy occasion like a wedding or black tie event when a daily driver may not fit the occasion.

I had forearm surgery that required me to switch to wearing my watch on my dominant wrist and I was, indeed, smacking it on everything all the time. I think Rolexes have a particularly weird place in society because while they are by no means the most expensive watches you can get, they are, for the public, synonymous with luxury. Watch enthusiasts understand that Rolexes can cost anywhere from a few thousand dollars (still not cheap!) to well over a hundred thousand dollars, but to - well, to normal human beings - it just conjures the idea that the wearer is wealthy. Someone else mentioned inheritance, but there's also simply the fact that the watch market is so inflated now compared to where it was 20 years ago. My cat's vet wears a beautiful steel/gold 16610 Submariner. I asked him about it and he said his wife bought it for him 25 years ago and he doesn't think about it at all. It probably cost her about 1/10th of what they go for on the secondary market now. Now *I* can think through all of that, but a non-enthusiast (assuming they notice it - which is a big assumption) probably sees it and thinks, "Wow, this guy is loaded."

Whats over the sleeve. This use was mutuated from the famous Italian industrialist Gianni Agnelli. As Gianni Agnelli was a style icon at the time (and for a long time) men were trying to imitate him wearing the watch on the cuff. The reality is that Agnelli wore the watch on the sleeve for a very specific reason (or at least started like that). His watch of choice was the Rolex Submariner. The sub always had quite the sharp bezel and anyone that wore it with dres shirts knows that the sharp bezel ruins the cuffs. It literally tear into them, so to avoid ruining his hi end bespoke shirts he would wear it on the cuff.
