Every single mitre gauge on both budget and more expensive tools is not good, unless you go for something like a Felder, most people get an aftermarket gauge or fettle the old one to suit. These Jobsite saws are never great on dust extraction.

All the reviews I've seen agree the stock ones are basically next to useless. Most just say buy a better one, the end! You didn't just write it off. Instead you offered ways to mitigate it's obvious flaws and possibly make it usable for a newbie like I am who isn't going to use it often (at least at first) and so doesn't want to spend a small fortune on a better one until I know it's worth spending on one.

I did a small mod to the mitre slide to fix it a little. Deepened the slots to lower it onto the bed, flattened just a little the bottom of the plastic base and wrapped a single layer of electrical tap on each end of slide. Just as an experiment before maybe making a sled. Surprisingly much better, virtually no wobble and really accurate.

What a great review and super thorough and well presented video. Subbed and looking forward to more videos. About the rubbish mitre gauge, it’s possible to use a punch or nail set to make a dimple at a few points along the bar which (by displacing material) makes the bar a little wider, works better on a steel bar of course, but may help. For the vertical angle it would need shimming. Best of luck with your channel, I am sure you’ll do fantastically well!

I've had mine now for about four months and it hasn't missed a beat. There has been quite a bit of talk about the differences between this and the DeWalt and the only thing anyone has given me is that the gearing screws for the height adjustment are plastic on the Rutlands and metal on the DeWalt. My very budget Workzone saw has actually served me well and is surprisingly accurate for a £100 saw. Unfortunately the pressed tin table has non standard mitre grooves so I snapped up the Rutlands mitre gauge offer and am looking for a saw which was going to be a Dewalt but what a price. I think you have convinced me and I assume the Rutlands upgraded mitre gauge will fit the slots which I also assume are standard 19mm.

Excellent review! I bought this saw too because of its price and its features and have also bought the Rutland Mitre fence to be sure it would fit. It makes a world of difference with the adjustable slides to take out the wobble. The flip stop works well with no movement when making repeat cuts. It has locking points every 5 degrees and you can set it anywhere in between by locking it manually. It’s a really solid piece of kit. It would stop small slithers of wood falling down the gap, but I don't think a 0 clearance insert would help much with dust. The blade guard would help reduce the spray of the dust and keep it contained but I don't like using a guard especially cause it has no hole for extraction aswell. My Scheppach planer is okay, it's getting old (approx 5 years). It's not been used tons in that time but I've found the dust extraction pretty poor and the fence likes to move a tad. It all looks like so much plastic and thin metal though, but I like the lightness, the throat plate won’t last very long, but even wood ones need replacing, be good if manufacturers left a copy template to make it easier to make your own. Having a locked riving knife is good idea, though I occasionally take mine off when doing rebates but that’s only because it’s too tall. The horrible brittle plastic blade guard is awful. Be good to see if the fence moves with the machine locked to the floor, but that looks good especially for that kind of money, is there an extending fence? I still use an old ELU which is great with extending rods for the fence so I can rip 8x4’s but not the most accurate thing in the world mind you it’s nearly 30 years old!
@SplitbarkStudio8 ай бұрын
It does have a few plastic parts to it, although the parts that are necessary like the surface and fence seem to be strong enough (at least for what I need). This might be a dumb question, but can the riving knife be lowered much below the height of the blade? I've been considering buying this saw for cutting fret slots using a crosscut sled and a specialist fret slotting blade, in other words making multiple non-through cuts. The thing is, those blades have a tiny 0.6mm kerf, so the riving knife would completely block the cut if it can't be lowered out of the way. I'm assuming that others who use table saws for this purpose simply remove the riving knife completely, though I note that you say this model doesn't seem to allow that. Excellent review, by the way!
@SplitbarkStudio8 ай бұрын
Very good question, the riving knife can only go to the 2 heights as shown in the video, as far as I'm aware you aren't able to take the Riving knife out. For me, I have had the worst budget saws possible and they even include the ability to take it out so I think it is a small flaw you cannot do it with this saw. Although I do like the ease of adjusting it
@gregbatchelor92058 ай бұрын
@@SplitbarkStudio thanks for the reply! I actually got a response from Rutlands as well after asking them the same question, they said: "The thickness of the riving knife should always be slightly thinner than the kerf of the blade, as you mention, if the riving knife is thicker than the kerf then the wood will not pass by the knife. The riving knife can be removed but for safety reasons we would never recommend this, it is an important safety feature of the saw." So apparently the riving knife *can* be removed (no idea how, as I don't have the saw yet) but good to know it seems to be possible. And whilst I commend Rutlands for their adherence to full health and safety/liability guidelines, for the purpose I'm looking to use it for, there is virtually zero risk of kickback etc, as may otherwise be the case when using the saw without this feature. Think I might just go for it!

Very nice overview ! How noisy it is ? If you've worked with other saw how is it on the noise level compared to others? I ordered it yesterday but I'm still not sure if I can use it in the garden of my house or should I rent a space to work on it ? Thanks anyway

It is quite loud, but any table saw with this type of motor is gonna be like that, its just one of them unavoidable issues I'm afraid. I used to have a cheap titan table saw and it was louder than this however

Im quite sure all tools from Rutlands are rebranded WEN products, this in particular is identical to the WEN TT0811

You can either use a square and place it against the blade or you can use a digital angle reader like I used here

The new Evolution job site saw looks almost identical to the Rutlands unit in so many respects that I assume they both come from the same source. There are some significant feature differences which may explain the extra cost of the Evo unit and makes choice a matter of personal choice. However, having had dealings with Rutlands in the past over an issue with their router and router lift, I found their insistence on conducting a dialogue via email and refusing to talk to me on the phone (try finding a phone number for them) very frustrating and unhelpful so that I would think very long and hard about spending my money at Rutlands on anything more than a cheap set of chisels - expensive machinery - most unlikely. Evolution on the other hand were very helpful and via the phone sorted a problem out for me very quickly and with little debate, and I have no link to Evolution. That's my experience of the two companies.
@SplitbarkStudio9 ай бұрын
As many have said, it does look very similar to the evolution. I cant fault either company, I've got the new generation cordless mitre saw from evolution and I love it. I did notice that evolutions table saw has less power than this table saw though

So there’s no way of removing the riving knife? You couldn’t then make a zero clearance insert plate eh. Do you know if there’s a zero clearance insert plate available to buy for this saw? Love your channel.
@SplitbarkStudio5 ай бұрын
Doesn't look like you can pull it out, don't get me wrong there's probably a way you can but I wouldn't be comfortable in doing that. Doesn't look like they do zero clearance inserts either. Been thinking of making my own out of wood. A lot of people have been comparing this to the new evolution table saw, that might have a removable riving knife?

Excellent review, thank you, but please stop spreading the ‘no dado blades in the UK’ myth. If you want to buy a dado set, they’re freely available. Extended arbour saws aren’t as freely available, but that’s because these saws would struggle to meet other EU (UK) Regulations (braking and guarding), NOT because ‘dado sets (or groove cutters) are illegal’. 👍
@SplitbarkStudio9 ай бұрын
Every day's a school day, I thought it was the same rule for all saws, thanks for letting me know
@richmiller5409 ай бұрын
It isn't a myth, dado sets are in practice almost impossible to use with our health and safety laws, even if you could somehow manage to satisfy all the health and safety requirements relating to the dado itself you would only be allowed to use it if you have no other possible way of cutting the dado. I had the HSE round to my workshop, he went through all the things I would need to do to make using the dado 'legal' he then said you have a router table and as that is safer and available to you you must use that instead.
@gbwildlifeuk82698 ай бұрын
@@richmiller540which is why table saws for UK have a shorter arbour, to prevent you fitting dados!

I did not know this, not used a dado set in a long time, is there a good reason why this H&S is in place? What was wrong with using a dado set?
@Stu815 ай бұрын
@@thomasbroker69 it only applies to commercial use, you can do what you like in a home workshop, in a commercial setting you cannot by law remove or interfere with safety equipment and that applies to riving knife and guards, but you can buy a dado compatible table saw.

It's the same as the Skil saw even down to the push stick. Only big diffence is the Skill has a 4 legged stand.
