My girls free range thru summer and spend half a day under the citrus trees and part time on the patio. They claim one 4 x 4 area that I spray off each evening At supper time they head back to the large enclosed chicken yard. They put themselves to bed around 7. I put frozen half gallon plastic bottles in their coop once Temps reach 3 digits. I also hang toys in the bush in the larger chicken yard. Small swimming pool with a few inches of water and frozen watermelon rinds help their Arizona summers. Whew! Just thought I'd share

Thank you so much for sharing Chickenlandia with us. I found 3 abandoned ducklings who apparently told me I need to raise chickens with them. I didn’t even know I wanted chickens until the ducks came waddling by. You are the wealth of knowledge that I need to ensure my feathered friends stay healthy and happy. Much happiness to you Ms. President of Chickenlandia!

Love how happy the birds are, and how loveable vega has become. If you do this again you might want to put down some radish, kale or other brassica seeds in the rough patches. They will help break up the soil, grow fast and my girls love eating those leaves!

Two sizable runs isn’t in the cards for us, but my husband and I are knocking around ideas for moving the run to the opposite side of the coop. That side would have a chicken door and buried predator proofing that we could attach to the run after we moved it in place. We’ve done crazier things for our animals! 🙂

I have the best story ever about my favorite hen. Her name is Ten. Yes Ten. I ordered my Buff Orphingtons through the mall from a reputable company. They arrived approximately two days after being hatched. I had everything ready. I was so excited. I haven’t had a flock in about eight years. So anyway back to the story. I opened the box, taking each little chick out, dipping their beak in water and placing them under my hen warmer. As I counted I got to nine, ( I ordered ten) and I only had nine. I counted again. Only nine. I used this company last time and they were great. Never any dead chicks. I counted for a third time looked in the box nothing. Then I proceeded to remove the nesting pad and there was Ten!! So small, definitely dehydrated and oh so cold. Oh NO! I’m going to loose this baby. I warmed the water just a little. Dipping her beck several times. She drank. A lot. Then placed her under a warming lamp I added just in case. Within just a few hours she had rejoined her two brothers and seven sisters under the hen heater. Removed the just in case lamp. As I checked on them several times that day she was easy to spot so small. As time went on when I came out she would immediately run out to me for a cuddle. So at about seven weeks they started picking on Ten. Oh no you are not. In the dog crate she went next to the larger brooder. I tended the bleeding area twice a day until she had completely healed. I’m happy to report she is now 14 weeks, almost as large as the other hens and she still runs to me to be picked up. I never thought I would be in chicken love however I am. Oh the others are okay. I have three hens that are just not nice but the others are nice. I chose this breed because I do want them to go broody and sit on a clutch of eggs to grow my flock. Okay thats my story about Ten. She deserved a better name, but since they all look so much alike It just stuck.

The aerating shoes probably would have worked better if you did one of three things... The first, least likely without doing one of the other procedures, was place all of your weight on one foot at a time. The second is to jump (landing on one or both feet) -- which due to bad knees I cannot do. The thrid is to increase the wieght on the shoes, either by becoming over 250 pounds (like me) or to wear a backpack filled with extra weight. 😀

I'm sorry to ask this here but it's the most recent video and I'm hoping you'll see this. Or maybe a fellow chicken lover will chime in. It's about my 1 1/2 year old hen that had bumble foot. I soaked her foot 5 times in Epsom salt and each time put vetericyn after. Her foot continued to look swollen so I decided to be bold and carefully oh so gently cut the center out. To my surprise it came out fairly easy and there was a gaping hole left so I sprayed vetericyn in it and filled the hole with hen healer. I thought I'll go ahead and spray the foot with blu kote just for good measure. The hen was wrapped in a towel during the procedure and was not seemingly stressed. As I started to wrap her foot with the non stick gauze and vet wrap, her face turned very deep red and then fairly purple and she died. Right there in my arms. Please could someone tell me was it anything I did? Was the blu kote toxic, or was this whole thing just too stressful (I know they hide their stress well.) I feel awful but still would like to learn from my terrible experience. Any advice, suggestions is appreciated.
@WelcometoChickenlandia4 ай бұрын
It was nothing you did, I promise. When chickens have things like bumblefoot, there's more of a chance they have something else going on, something underlying that you can't see. She could very likely have had a systemic infection that was too far gone. You didn't do anything wrong. You were doing everything you could to try and help her. She was super lucky to have you and I believe she will go to the next place with the memory of the care a kind human gave her. ❤️

Question for everyone: I have Jersey Giants and four of my hens went broody this spring. First one sat eggs for 26 days with no hatches. We just took all those eggs and opened them. No sparenty development at all. Jen’s seem to be getting bred regularly but none seemed fertilized. Will pull the other hens eggs at about 25/26 days to check results. Any opinions? 0:48

I have a 6 week old baby chick limping. She won't put weight on it. She is eating and drinking. When she walks, she uses one foot, and hops. I don't know what to do. It's only been 3 days.❤
@WelcometoChickenlandia5 ай бұрын
You should probably separate her from the flock and give her a chance to rest her leg/foot. Put her in an area where she doesn't have to travel for food and water, and give her some good vitamins. You can try Arnica 30c in her water if you think it's an injury. ❤️ You could consider creating a splint for her if you think it might be splayed leg/spraddle leg or if it's broken.
@tamasitarod31765 ай бұрын
@@WelcometoChickenlandia I'm definitely thinking it's sprained, broken, or maybe out of socket. She is not getting picked on and I worry about separating her she does stay to herself sometimes to rest, and I have the food and water close by. I am keeping an eye on her eating and drinking.
