TBH, around every corner in Amsterdam, there's at least 5 people smoking weed or marowana or vaping. I should know. I've been in Amsterdam for a vacation about 4 hours, and I've already seen 4 different "e-smoking" shops, complete with refills and liquor

Most of the places in this video will actually be packed with tourists. My number 1 tip for visitors is to get out of the city and visit one of the other beautiful towns The Netherlands has to offer. The country is quite small and there is excellent public transportation so everything is just a short and comfy train ride away. Haarlem, Alkmaar, Utrecht, Leiden and Delft are all less than an hour by train from Amsterdam central station and all have the canals and old buildings (and yes, even "coffeeshops" if thats your thing) you can see in Amsterdam but without all the tourists. Almost everybody speaks English very well and prices in these towns are usually alot lower than in Amsterdam, so if you really want an authentic experience of Dutch city life, go and see these places. You can even get your hotel there and save some money and go and see Amsterdam on day trip, instead of spending your entire trip there.

Two friends and I are going to Amsterdam next November using it as a base. I was there for three days November 23. It was second time in Amsterdam and in those three days managed to visit Haarlem and Hertogenbosch because Den Bosch had the mega record fair. Both cities where great. We'll go to Den Bosch again for the fair and also Rotterdam for the modern architecture. As you say the public transport in the Netherlands is great and so many places easily accessible. I should check out those other cities. I love photography so anything that looks picturesque is great. My favourite actor Rutger Hauer was born in Utrecht area so that might be a good place to visit. What do you think of The Hague? From photos it seems nice.

Tourist tip: watch for the damn bike lanes, its so frustrating biking in amsterdam with all the careless tourists, legally a pedestrian is in trouble if something happens on the bike lane. 2. Dont rent a bike and go around biking if a. Youre not a good cyclist and b. You have no experience cycling through crowds, busy roads, and dont know the signaling used. DEFINITELY dont bike high or drunk. And if you want some good weed go to Boerjongens - they are synonymous with quality. You wont regret it. Avoid any street conversations, pretty much all thieves and scammers. Ignore the whispering drug dealers at night. Thats all i can think of rn

For sure thank you so much for the endorsement and for keeping watching :) And yay for Tome! What did you try over there that was inspired by our locals in the video? For what concerns the home dinner... Really sorry to hear it was not available for so long! I know you can't cover everything, but I think the Oost got shorted in your picks. I was glad to see Ten Katemarkt make the list. It might not be the best street market in Amsterdam, but it has the best prices and some really great baked goods.
@Withlocals
@Withlocals 5 жыл бұрын
Definitely we could not put everything in. Actually not even half! 😅 but at least this is a start! And for those who want to try, we host plenty of amazing locals on our platform, who offer truly interesting activities, tours and workshops to explore a different sides of Amsterdam (so as many other cities worldwide). This said, you got it right with Ten Katemarkt: cheap and great baked goods are also the reasons why many locals recommended it to us :) And the Oost... Oh well: here @ Withlocals we are big fans of this beautiful lesser-known district! Now though we are very curious: What is though the best street market in town according to you?
@richardbeck2631
@richardbeck2631 5 жыл бұрын
I am sure that my friends and neighbors from my time on Wijttenbachstraat would expect me to choose the dappermarkt, and that is a great street market. However, I have to say my favorite is still Albert Cuyp Market. I know this is the busiest and most touristy, but there is a reason for that. The real reason I love it though is I rented a studio overlooking the market for a month one summer. The first morning I lived there, I was cursing the early morning noise of the market setting up. By the time I was leaving I had become accustomed to the sounds and timings of the market and starting my day with coffee, overlooking the shoppers and merchants became special to me.
@Withlocals
@Withlocals 5 жыл бұрын
Reading your reply this morning was truly heartwarming :) We could hear the same sounds, smell the same coffee scent and see the same shoppers setting up their stalls! Beautiful, precious, authentic memory. Thank you for sharing it with us! And yes, we agree: both the markets you named (Dapper and Albert Cuyp) are valid suggestions, for different reasons, that divided also our locals 😄 Maybe a good suggestion for anyone willing to see the same beauty you just talked about, would be to slow down, give yourself the time to soak in the city's rainbow of atmospheres and vibes, get accustom to the sounds (noises sometimes eheh), smells, people's gestures... But if they do not have so much time? Well, maybe meeting someone that is willing to walk you through, help you to choose a portion that is special to them for some reason and listen to their stories, connect to their places. Because there is no better way to get in touch with the beating heart of a city than managing to actually meet their inhabitants, don't you think? :)
@richardbeck2631
@richardbeck2631 5 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree. On every trip I have taken to Amsterdam I have made friends. Some have become family. Each of these wonderful Dutch friends has added to my love and appreciation for Amsterdam by sharing their perspective of the city with me. Cafe nes, Radio Plantsoen, and even places like Dappermarkt are all things that I would not have come to love if it weren't for one local friend or another.

You just embodied the spirit of Withlocals in one comment, Richard 😍 We could not agree more with you! It is only with and thanks to the locals that travelers can actually go beyond the surface of places and tune to their same heartbeat ❤ This is also what we are working for: to change the way people travel and approach cities, to reconstruct the connection between visitors, local inhabitants and places!

For anyone who lives or travel to the netherlads: any recommendation of cities to visit around December? I plan to travel for a week and would love to know of places to see. Gracias!

Just Google for the cities below to get a better picture: Utrecht - 20 min train ride from Amsterdam. Utrecht also has canals, but wider. It is a city with a lot of students. My favourite city for a day trip or a night out. There's a nice vibe over there. Leiden - 20/25 min train ride. It is just like Amsterdam, but smaller and more beautiful in my eyes. Also a lot of students! Rotterdam - 30/40 min train ride. Totally different, very modern, high buildings but good restaurants and bars. Groningen - 1,5 hour train ride. In the north of the Netherlands. Groningen also has canals and nice bars. Volendam - 30 min train ride. An old, typical Dutch fishing village. There will be a lot of tourists, but you must have seen it. I don't know if it is a good place to visit in the winter. Other options: - Den Bosch - Maastricht - Den Haag/The Hague

The most annoying thing about Amsterdam is the young male tourists looking to get high and get laid. Boring and irritating.

The Withlocals philosophy behind is the following: let's try to move beyond the same highlights, venues, shops. Let's try to shift from mass tourism to personal quests to discover the essence of cities. Everyone has the right to travel, which is the best way to overcome barriers and stereotypes (so relevant nowadays!). At the same time inhabitants of cities have the right to live their space in tranquility. Tourists cannot be stopped, not to mention the huge inflow of money into local economies! But we must find a balance: how to do it? Our answer as Withlocals is: let's join the locals! Let's learn together to love a city like its locals do, to respect its inhabitants and culture, to distribute across town without overcrowding one specific spot. We firmly believe it is possible and we are working for this ideal :) How does it sound to you as a proposition?

Luckily most rental bikes are painted in bright colours so locals can easily spot them so they can take there skill in navigating the traffic into account.
