This series even though it’s about a kind of mundane subject, is the best thing going on Fishtube right now. Thanks Bentley!

First-Class content as always, many thanks! I used to use these after feeding aquatic turtles as they REALLY mess up the water. Comprehensive information always gets my vote. Thank you!!!!

Loving this series. Yep - genius. Picked up a couple from someone downsizing their fish room - will be moving my 20L into my office and planning to use internal instead of hob due to space available. Love the idea of using as a polishing tool for another tank or a hospital tool to clear out meds.

We have this one, but a slightly older revision. The suction cup mount sucks because it has a clip on the mount that can break off, so we need to zip tie to keep it upright. Other than that, it's awesome and fits filter floss and a purigen bag quite well. The variable flow, as well as the high flow in general is awesome. If we could buy another mount for the slightly older revision it would be 10/10. They are super super quiet too!

This fluval u4 is the only filter I use and like u said I took the trays out and cut up sponges and filter wool which I get off Amazon so it works out much cheaper without trays and get a lot more in there with the bio and find it works great for me I get crystal clear water good airflow and don’t have to worry about overflow or power outage. Also never had any problems with it and keeps water chemistry and does what it’s supposed to. 😊The only downside side is with this particular one it takes up quite a lot of room but having said that my hillstream loaches love climbing all over it as well as the shrimp and I hide it with all the plants so u can’t see it. Btw I’ve loved this series and is a good base line explaining all the different filters out there 😊

Silence, media capacity between a big sponge and a hang on depending on model. Fill it with bio media and sponges and filter floss if you want polishing. And flow, as you said. Silent operation is probably the biggest plus though, at least for me. The amount of sponge material you can put in it is way more than a big sponge filter depending on model of course. The really small ones would be good for temporary polishing or even better, medicine removal. I do run these in 3 tanks, in the bedroom I wouldn't tolerate anything else. The other 2 are in tanks with Corydoras.

I have 3 tanks currently set up with internal filters. All are eheim filters that use sponge inside. They really do a great job of polishing the water, and you can attach an air tube to them so you can get extra air into the water. You can visibly see when the sponges are clogging up by the reduced water flow, and usually pretty easy to remove the top for cleaning. (Sometimes needs a little bit of effort to get out). Overall, it’s a good filter method for mid sized tanks.

Very wise to describe it as a tool in the aquarium, I use mine for polishing as well as water movement! It's a great alternative to a power head that has the benefit of not getting clogged with debris as quickly. Great for my cories!

Im a big fan of internal filters for the reasons you mention.they are awesome for mechanical filtration, circulation and they provide plenty of bio. People tend to blame bio for all aquarium ills and way overdo it when something like this is plenty.

Love this type of filter. I use 2 Sicce Shark Pro 900 in my 40 long and have 0 complaints. These units have magnetic cartridges so they pop off without having to remove the entire assembly from the tank. Sure, it takes up some tank space but not having to worry about leaking or power outages is fantastic. Mainly used for mechanical filtration with sponge and filter floss, BUT…. I’m able to toss in some purigen or similar when needed (adding new driftwood). Nice review.

I have enjoyed the heck out of this series. Yes, even the episode where you blasted my beloved undergravel filter hahaha. My only concern with this series is for anyone in the future running across any of these videos and not realizing you are good cop & bad cop depending on which week it is in the series hahaha. You know two years from now someone is going to say "look, even Bentley thinks the box filter is the greatest" or he hates sumps. Oh well, hopefully they'll watch more than that one or two videos. I know you still want to look at matten filters. Do you plan to keep this series going with over tank weir, bucket filters (lots of DIY), or wetland filters? Either way, I'm enjoying all these my friend 😁

Im curious about the potential of an Internal UV filter for quarantine tanks, but not nearly curious enough to buy one yet. Nice Hillsboro Hops hat!

I'm kind of seeing this as a solution to a bit of a puzzle I've got, as I'm setting up what'll be a heavily planted tank with about a 4-6inch substrate for just snails & shrimp, where said tank is plastic, so as this'll be in my bedroom I need something quiet, lightweight, no real "plumbing" used, that'll be fine if power is interrupted multiple times a day for the seasons that'll happen. After the tank is stable & at least somewhat seasoned, I'll be stopping using any mechanical filtration but until then the Mystery snails minimally should enjoy the variable water speed this would give me. As I get more snail/shrimp tanks, this'll be moved to start them all off.

I like these comparisons. I use a more like hang on back but it's inside the tank. I fill the cartridge channels with silicone and put whatever loose media I feel like inside.

I'd much rather have internal filters then HOBs. I started with under gravel filters back in the mid 70s. Went to HOBs in the late 80s, then internal filters and external canisters. I do think that internal filters vary greatly in design and capacity, you can't cover all the variations of course. They are, however, more versatile then just for quarantine and flow (I do use my spare internal filter for quarantine tank). I think I will have to do my own video on internal fiters now even though I'm no genius and it will be just to hear myself talk. 😂

The internal Eheim’s and Fluval’s in the late 80s and 90s were so good. Now the design is horrible, and clogs up so fast, providing very limited flow soon after cleaning them.. The worst of them all are the small Oase filters, and the first gen shark pro (oval shape). I’m tempted to try the new square shark pro that many people have raved about, but not sure I believe it after dealing with the previous horrible design

I’ve had the U series for years. I have to say the flow is awesome. I can’t stand the cartridges. The sponge is too thin to do any real mechanical filtration. I would pack the blue bio cartridge with biohome or seachem’s media. Great flow

I'll need to test the 20L theory, I'm not sure it would fit. 🤔 I have three of these, 2 laying around, one being a work horse in a 29 with rainbows. I think I'll take you up on the suggestion of floss and move them around other tanks that could use some polishing up. Might even replace a few HOBs, as I really have to clean those so often, compared to the Fluvals. I'll get back to you on the genius thing.. 😆 Thanks Bentley, next to my Sunsun, these really are my favorites in my fish room. 🐟

Thats the idea of this series to show a video of the negatives backed up by a video of the positives so you get the full picture of each methods merits and flaws.
