One likely explanation for why the Burst seemed to perform better than the Sonicare is that he became aware that his brushing technique was leaving so much plaque behind so on a subconscious level he brushed that tooth better without even realizing it. He needs to expand his experiment to include more people and then repeat it a few more times for the results to have any real meaning.

The plaque always builds up in the same spots because those spots don’t have much mechanical activity happening in them. For example, that tooth that’s slightly out of place has a crevice where your tongue won’t make contact with when you run your tongue across it. The inside of your lip never rubs against it. It’s a spot where things can chill and grow

In fairness, you didn't use the Sonicare like they recommend. You aren't supposed to go back and forth, you are just supposed to run the toothbrush on an angle along the gumline. I love my Sonicare Diamond- which was recommended by my dentist. He now says I'm of no use to him, because he can't make any money off me anymore! (He's a character)

I would like to see the images of the exact brush heads for each toothbrush he used. I have a Sonicare, and have noticed despite how similar the brush heads may appear, I get greatly varying results depending which I'm using. I'm wondering if there are Oral-B ones that would perform better or worse for different tooth alignments than what he used. I would also like to see all brushes he used lined up for comparison.

This video helped me decide on a new electric toothbrushes after my trusty early-edition Sonicare finally died after about 5 years or so. I also had sone sensitivity with my Sonicare over one tooth that had a shoddy crown job, so between that and all the types of electronic toothbrush out now, I didn't just rush out and get the latest edition Sonicare. I had read some great reviews about the Burst in various comparison articles, so I was glad to come across this video made by a dentist with objective results of the plaque test. I ended up buying the Burst a few weeks ago and LOVE IT! The vibrations are not so agrressive to make me sensitive, it is sturdy (doesnt feel like a cheaper version to me like he said, but I'm also comparing to a 5-6 year old Sonicare), the head is small enough to easily reach my back teeth, the bristles are soft enough that I can really get at the gumline without sensitivity. Even after my first brush, it had removed plaque that wasn't even being removed by my Sonicare - plaque I didnt even know I had! Teeth felt like a fresh dental cleaning from a hygienist. The heads are also less expensive to replace. I am really happy with it! (Note: I am not a paid promoter - wish I was lol. I just showed my family this toothbrush and shared this video as well.)

Thanx Doc. I emphasis to my clients the most important oral hygiene tips are, “flossing brushes 40% of the tooth” (pink areas in the corners are only cleaned by floss) and “it is a tooth brush(Oral-B) not a teeth brush (Sonicare).” Teeth brushing may result in a tooth, tooth brushing should help you keep your teeth. I wish dentists would go over toothpaste allergies, it took over 25 years of suffering for a dentist to go hey could you be allergic to your toothpaste? I then switched to another brand not colgate or crest, and my gums are 90% better than they were. Dry mouth can also lead to irritation and gum issues, dentists simply just saying you aren't doing a good job isn't very productive.

I had been using a manual after accidentally dropping my sonicare and dirtying up the brush head on it and too lazy until now to buy more but thought hmmm maybe there is an even better electric brush that does a better job of removing plaque while being gentle at the same time. Thus my watching these videos . Should I stick with my sonicare?

This video was really well presented. The results for the v-brush were pretty much what i expected (maybe good in a pinch like working 12hr shifts like i do. better than not brushing at all and more portable) I bought my first electric brush last summer. I went with oral b and the results have been great. I do like the round design myself because it does make you focus on getting the brush on each tooth as the video says (seems I'm a bit of a perfectionist lol). People should remember the problem is you can’t guarantee that with each day you brush exactly like the day before or night or however many times a day you brush. Regardless of the toothbrush, thats human nature the same as you are not the same person psychologically that you were two, five minutes or an hour ago - things occur in that time. It’s a test with variability, so you could use the burst brush again even after having the better of the four results this day/morning and then the next day miss spots. Not every day do you apply the same movements/directionality or pressure on every spot evenly/ with exact precise distribution. Best way to look at it is how clean your teeth get on the parts where you truly try / know you brushed well - that will give a reading of how well the brush can actually perform, human error / nature cannot be blamed on a technically working product if the product does what it actually claims really. Thanks for the posting the video though, it was interesting to watch and see the results when using the pill. Can you buy those pills to use to show where the plaque is if they are available and use them daily, or is that not advised / could have adverse affects on oral health even?

Looks like those pills are available on Amazon! Just type in “disclosing tablets” :) I totally agree with you about human error. The truth is you can do just as good a job with a manual brush (which is what I use) as with any electric. The important part is proper technique!
@simplyonemortality8122
@simplyonemortality8122 4 жыл бұрын
Ask A Hygienist thank you, I’ll have a look! I have refused to buy an electric toothbrush for years for basically that same reason (and a few others). Last week however, I bought an electric toothbrush on sale (not a top model and it was quite cheap - Oral b 2000) and so far have been pleasantly surprised at how clean my teeth and gums get and have gotten used to using it quicker than I thought it might take. I mainly decided to try one as I had an issue reaching my back teeth with a manual toothbrush head and every time I brushed I became a bit unwell. I just thought for the price I could try and if i decided to revert back it wasn’t a huge loss financially. I’ll wait longer to make up my mind as to wether its money well spent or not :) I agree with what you say about technique, I think one of the potential issues is that some people become quite lazy with brushing and see using an electric as if it solves all problems / requires less effort to use. If i don’t put the effort in either with a manual or an electric, well then that my own fault if my oral health suffers really.

I still like my dual action Braun from twelve or so years ago. Regular looking brush covers much more area than the tiny round ones. Sonic Care was touted by my dentist seven or eight years ago so I ordered one from Amazon. Felt cheap and again had a tiny little brush but more importantly the first one just failed to turn on. Then the replacement also failed to work. So much for that garbage. My dual action is still going strong although I have to say that I brush while watching YT and it generally is at least six or eight minutes. For other reasons I do not use tooth paste so there is no abrasive action. I also only brush once a day. Seems to work for me as my checkups are very good. I only hope I can replace my Braun dual action when this ones poops out. I have no trouble getting the brushes on line for it. I have no faith in gimmicky products that have no quality control and are built and sold for and by advertising. Flashing lights on a tooth brush for more than a hundred dollars!! P.T. Barnum sure had it right. Take care. Doug

In my opinion Oral B is better than Phillips. Something about that circular brush head. Definitely a great choice for people who have problem areas. For instance, the lingual surface on the lower mandibular. I used to have problems with that area so I switched to oral b and it's much better. Yes, I floss but switching the toothbrush helped alot. Maybe I'll try Burst tho. Seems pretty good.

I tried the Burst after seeing this and for 9 months I was pleased, until the battery lifespan ended. After only 9 months, the battery would not hold a charge and one can get 1 brushing before it needs to recharge. I can not recommend based on battery lifespan.

Great video! Concise and informative. I've always been bad about keeping my teeth clean and it results in more frequent trips to the hygienist for cleanings (3x/annually). But since the last cleaning, I've gotten a lot better and one of the things that helped was getting a Quip toothbrush. The timing and the comfort of it along with subscription head replacements have made it easy to keep up my dental hygiene. I'm flossing more consistently too because I love how clean my mouth feels and looks. I'd be interested in seeing a comparison between the Burst and Quip, if you get around to it. Since I've already made the investment, unless it proves to be junk like that v-white (which I doubt), I'll probably just keep it, but it'd be nice to know I made a good choice. Also I would like to hear what you know about hydroxyapatite. Just ordered a toothpaste called Rise Up, which replaces flouride with hydroxyapatite. I'm not afraid of flouride; I always use a flouride toothpaste and grew up in California drinking flourinated water. I have a great teeth with only two minor cavities filled, but they are sensitive. I had read that remineralization that hydroxyapatite does helps reduces sensitivity. I don't like overly sweet toothpastes either and it seems weird to me that toothpaste companies keep making their pastes so sweet (and promoting sweet addiction) when we all know sugar is bad for your teeth.

Oral-B clearly requires multiple techniques judging by the size of the brush, When that's done efficiently surely that's the best toothbrush as your cleaning every tooth back, to front and to the sides?

Kizzster as a hygienist I’d say oral b does a better job, but honestly what’s most important is proper technique. I use a manual brush with no issues.

Thank you so much! Just bought a Burst after getting an awesome teeth cleaning. It seems so soft like it isn’t doing anything. But my teeth feel so clean . I did notice that despite my vigilant brushing and flossing , some of the tea stains are returning to my teeth after only a couple of weeks post cleaning. I’m So sad . Any tips to keep the stains down ? I’m 45 and I drink a lot of unsweetened chai tea . I switched to chai from coffee a couple of years ago and I’ve noticed that tea stains my teeth worse than coffee did . Or is it that I’m getting older and my teeth stain more easily.?Wonderful video!!! I’ve considered trying this experiment myself. But hadn’t looked into where to get the special teeth dye . They used that stuff when I was a kid to show us how to brush properly. I’ve always taken care of my teeth . You only get the one set of adult teeth . It pains me to see people flat out not brush their teeth ! I’d go insane ! Just the bad taste in my mouth and the furry feeling of plaque would drive me nuts ! Thank you 😊

I know this is old but I hate completely straight toothbrushes. I have Invisalign and my gums aren’t as great as they were before. I use manual toothbrushes with the flossing effect (some bristles are thinner and softer) which burst has, this clarifies my decision. Thanks for making this video!

I purchased the Burst toothbrush and received it in the mail today. I like that they send you a brush head every 12 weeks for $7. And if your unit stops working, they'll replace it for free. I also read the brush is not made out of nylon like other brush heads are. When i used it today, my gums didn't feel cut up afterwards. It's just my first day but I like it!

Thank you for the good video, clean, clear and true Ordered my new Burst set this week, and will be getting it next week We are a family that uses regular tooth brushes but feel like bringing something new will reinvigorate the process of "wanting" to brush teeth. I am hoping for aaah this is new and modern and fun, in the beginning and then the process of letting the equipment do the work will give into cleaner mouths and less stress for us as a family trying to get our kids on top of dental hygiene. And a BIG YES, that flossing is still a must no matter what new toothbrushes you get. Appreciate your time and helpful video content! Thumbs up on your quality video, good lighting, audio and editing.

I am using the Burst and find that it cleans much better than my Sonicare. I have a place on one tooth that is always missed and have to scrub it with floss to remove the plaque. The Burst gets that spot. The reason the Burst cleans better is the longer, softer bristles. They get between teeth and along gum lines much better than the stiffer bristles. I can even feel them getting under the gums.

There is no point buying a electric toothbrush if you are going to scrub or use it like a conventional toothbrush. As I like to tell my patients, think of toothpaste as sand, and your teeth as your car paint. Now would you brush with light pressure or heavy pressure.

I feel like a giant sucker because I spent A LOT of money on the autobrush (one for me and one for my kids) and it was a total bust. Trust me, even if he had done two minutes it wouldn't have mattered. It doesn't clean at the gumline and leaves food particles and plaque in between teeth. They of course don't offer refunds either. 🙄

wow, great job doing this test! I feel the need to suggest that the test would have more terms through which we can make sure we don't really have any artifact discussing the results. so maybe the sequence of toothbrush use had an impact, so repeating the same test with a few different sequences and comparing them would solve that issue. if the result would be the same for the Burst toothbrush when you start the test with it, then I'll truly be convinced that the results are valid. Thank you for the video !

The reviews on target and Amazon all point out the batteries dying within 1 year with no product support.
