Hey Guys, I love your videos! I'm planning to hit the road next year and am considering going with a small fifth wheel. I noticed that a Grand Design (Flagship) model, which seems great in terms of quality and durability its very different than the Small models. For someone planning to live full-time in a smaller fifth wheel, what brand/model would you recommend? My concern is that while the top-of-the-line models appear to have excellent construction and attention to detail, the smaller ones might be relying on the reputation of the larger models and might not be as well-built. Could you share your thoughts on this?

RV manufacturers often try to appeal to different kinds of buyers. So they may have some models that are geared toward the higher end market while others are more targeted for the entry level crowd. But generally speaking, most quality brands want to keep the reputation they have built without compromising too much on their lower cost products. I created a guidebook on 5th wheels that can be very helpful for you, as it lists all of the brands and models that I recommend if you want a better quality RV. And it includes smaller size 5th wheels too. You can find it here - payhip.com/b/82KPO I hope that helps.

Hi Michael. This channel is actually all about RV travel, so that's why I approached it from that angle. Much of what I said also applies to stationary living though. It's best to choose from quality brands to get the best long-term result. Thanks for watching!

What about Ember....All composite exterior construction? Also has a independent suspension to have less wear and tear. Any thoughts on this company?
@RVInspectionAndCare

I can't really comment one way or another about Ember RV. They are a relatively new RV builder and so I usually wait until a few years have gone by to determine what kind of accurate picture of their quality and customer service that I can provide.

What type of ev has the best material and construction overall? Classic a?
@RVInspectionAndCare
@RVInspectionAndCare Жыл бұрын
Usually you need to follow the money to find high quality. In other words, if you are buying an entry-level travel trailer, it's clear from the price you're paying that higher quality materials, components and construction methods could not be used in that kind of RV. The money paid for it just doesn't allow for that. On the other hand, when you are buying a Class A diesel pusher or a Super C and you spend $500K or more, you should expect to see a huge upgrade in quality in every aspect of the RV. The old caveat is generally true - you tend to get what you pay for. I hope that helps.

thoughts on Lance? i've heard good things about them

Yes, Lance makes RVs that are generally a cut above their competition in many ways. But there are other brands that are better suited for fulltime travel and use. However, Lance is a great choice for the weekend and part-time RVer.

Hi Bob. As I said in the video, the brands I mentioned in the video aren't the only ones that can be used for full time travel. And the GD Reflection can be considered in that category too.

Indeed, Reflection, Solitude, and Momentum are all warrantied for full time living. I believe that Alliance does the same with most of their models as well. That's the thing with most media that has words like "best" in the title, they're usually fairly subjective and a lot of weight tends to be given to opinions. There are anecdotal examples of ALL RV brands failing at some point or another and all manufacturers do put a "sterling" unit or two that somehow lasts forever. Also, not suggesting or insinuating anything negative at all about Dwayne, but reviewers and presenters all have preferences and biases. Some of these biases are based on statistics and some are based on experience, brand loyalty, and experiences relayed by their own trusted sources. There are also some reviewers, and again, NOT suggesting that Dwayne falls into this group, that are easily influenced by manufacturers with kickbacks, swag, "demonstration unit" loans for "evaluation", discounts, invitations to media events with food and lodging provided as well as travel reimbursements, and many other things that they may or may not be required to disclose (by organizations like the FCC) and they may or may not actually disclose those things. You probably already know all that, but in case not, there it is. Best practice for a consumer is to observe multiple sources for information on subjective information to see where they overlap. If I had to offer one criticism for Dwayne, I think that he limits his lists to be a bit short, like this one, but I also think that he might be aiming for a more casual audience than me, one that isn't necessarily familiar with the industry and is hearing some of these brand names for the first time. If I was clueless about RVs, I think I'd rather only be introduced to a small number of the "best" options so as to not be overwhelmed with trying to remember so many new names all at once. Once I'm at an RV dealership and looking at units, if I'm lucky to get matched with a good salesperson, they can help me dial in on what I really want with the style/brand, floorplan, and features that mean the most to me. Just like with buying a car, there's something to be said for getting more education and all that, but I believe Dwayne's goal is to help folks just beginning their "high altitude" search before narrowing down to their final choice. I would also like to see more complete or exhaustive lists from him, but that's not his usual style. Ack, sorry for the wall of text. :(

@@Brigand231 Wow! That was a mouthful ... 🙂But you are so right about much of what you said. One of the advantages of listening to my channel is that you may not always agree with my opinions which are subjective, just as you say. But you can always be assured that my opinions are honestly mine. They are not bought and paid for by being associated with RV brands and products that are too close to allow me to be completely objective about my conclusions. And that is never going to change. Also, you are correct that I limit my lists on KZbin so as not to overwhelm some RVers with too much information that becomes difficult to process. But I also do it because I have found by experience that KZbin video viewers tend to tune out after about 10 - 12 minutes of watching the kind of subjects that I cover. And there is only so much information I can convey in an understandable way within 10 - 12 minutes or so. Thanks for the feedback though. I always like to hear what my long-time listeners are thinking.

I bought a new 2019 Grand Design Reflection 297RSTS. It was a lemon. They cut corners and used a 1/2" floor board in the kitchen slide out and the edge trim rubbed a hole on the main floor. The spec calls for 3/4" and they didn't have it she they used 1/2". They never fixed it properly. The roof had granular pebbles under the TPO membrane because they were too lazy to sweep it. It polled a hole in the TPO membrane. The tandem axles were out of alignment. The furnace squirrel cage and the ceiling fan cover gear box were made of plastic and broke apart just after one year. It was a disaster. The best thing I did was to get rid of it. I feel sorry for the poor schmuck who bought it. Follow up customer service is only good for people with YT channels. All others are put on mute. Grand Design sucks. Will never forget.

In addition, for larger GD units, many are having lots of issues with the Schwintek slides. The manufacturer does not warranty the repairs and it would not surprise me if there was a class action lawsuit regarding this manufacturing and design flaw. Do a Google search on this issue before buying a GD. Of course, issues with slides are not unique to GD but for the price and perceived quality, one would expect better.

Everybody has their opinions about Grand Design and I find that those opinions vary greatly. My experience with GD RVs is that they are built very well and as I said in the video, build quality is going to cost more. Whether they are worth the money they sell for, that's up to each consumer to decide.

That's just not in their wheelhouse. Airstream knows who their buyers are and what they want. And they have been extremely successful in meeting that demand for almost 100 years. There aren't many RV companies period that can claim the success that Airstream has had with their product line.
