If I did it over, I would have backed off on the stake criticism somewhat. They are not that bad compared to the majority of actual tent stakes. They do really well in soft and even saturated soil. They don't do as well in hard, dry ground. I actually bent one badly the first day I set it up because the ground was like concrete so that skewed my opinion. Overall though it is a good quality tent at an amazing price.

@Boomer's Outdoors Your point about the stakes is well justified. We do most of our camping near here in Wisconsin. The soil tends to be soft dirt or loose sand, which our stakes excel in. Finding a solution for rocky/hard terrain remains to be tricky. Perhaps a hardened slender pole stake would do better for that terrain, but narrow stakes don't work as well in sandy terrain. Maybe we will offer various stakes in the future? -Jonathan

Very fair review. I completely agree with your assessment. I bought this tent over a year ago and I am very happy with it. I slept in it last night with 15-20 mph winds and it was solid.

Thanks for the feedback. I really tried to be objective and look at the pros and cons. I realyy liked this tent, although I would have liked just a bit more room in the floor and a little wider at the top.

I know nothing about overnight camping or the gear you would need. But you sure do! Talking about vestibules and seams and stuff. Excellent review! Very thorough. Awesome to hear they sent it to you for free too!

I would have re-shot this part of the video, but I didn't notice it until editing. I would have had to drive all the way back to the mountain, and then hike half down the side to get to that area. So I just went with it.

Several things can be done to lighten it a small amount. You said that the guylines were "substantial." You can replace them with 1.8mm Fluorescent Reflective guylines, which should be lighter (60' for ~$10). You also don't need the stuff sacks, except for the tent stakes. Maybe you can find lighter weight stakes. But at 2.63 lbs., it is already a UL class tent, in my opinion. In fact, it is in the same class as the Big Agnes HV UL1, which is nearly 4.5x the price, if you pay full retail. The big issue that I see with the tent is the narrow walls. This could be a problem when condensation collects on the fabric, so maybe carry a sponge or microfiber towel to wipe them down.

It did develop quit a bit of condensation on the two nights that it rained. However, none of the moisture dripped into the tent. If you guy out the fly on the back side it keeps the fly off of the tent body and gives you pretty good ventilation. Before testing it I thought that the condensation would be a big issue, but it really wasn't. The only thing that I really didn't like about this tent was the narrowing at the top. If you put it in a compression sack it would take up very little space. Of course if you were 5 feet 9 inches or shorter you wouldn't be nearly as confined near the top.

Im guessing that was a windscreen for a microphone in the corner. Cool tent though! Very small and compact.

@@boomersoutdoors8898 I had the same thing happen on my tent liner review (on patreon). My big ol dead cat kept popping into the shot. I just ordered a new, more streamlined windscreen. Its the black foam that fits it nice and tight (for the Rhode videomicro). Its literally about 1/5 the size of the giant mop I had hanging off. Just got it yesterday! Fits perfectly and is so much smaller. Cant wait to try it out.

$99 ain't bad at all. For a 1 person tent I just want something that is lightweight,will protect me from the rain and is easy to get in and out of. I've been using a solitaire which is an absolute pain to get in and out of. This tent might be my next purchase. What can you do to reduce the weight of it?
@boomersoutdoors8898
@boomersoutdoors8898 Жыл бұрын
I don't think that you can make it any lighter. The guy ropes are pretty substantial and you could probably get by with just one. So you could probably get it down to 2 lbs 6 oz

You know that the Solitare weighs 2 oz more than the Trail Lark
@daviddrake5663

I reduced the weight a bit, no bag, no ropes, 4 stakes. But yeah the weight on this one is nice.
@boomersoutdoors8898

@daviddrake5663 yea, the problem with the Traillark is that it needs to be staked to help spread it out. Your pad would probably do that so you could cut 8 stakes down to 2. You differently need to stake the vestibule and the fly on the backside to have good ventilation. You could also cut the guy ropes down to 1, and that would probably cut 4 or 5 oz bringing it down to just over 2 lbs.
