I am Canadian and this has been a problem for the last couple of decades. Companies have come in and got bought out by the big 3. I am with one of the sub company for one of the big three and I pay $42cdn a month for unlimited text, calling but I am at 3G. After my 4GB alotted it gets throttled down from 3G. Unless you go into a contact, go into 5G and be on a contact with a new phone I would be paying more than $100.00 a month(CDN) Great right! Come for the health care, stay to get screwed by the cell phone companies. They have a Monopoly and do everything they can to where there is no competition. The Canadian Government has said they’d push back and never have. Yeah! We are a free country. And in this free country to get screwed by just a few people who make loads of money off of us. Oh Canada!

Question for Sherry....For 10 years I was a snowbird spending months in Venice Fl. As I only use my cell phone when on the road, I purchased a T-Mobile Prepaid package for $100.00 and did annual top up for $10. Due to COVID I sold my home in Fl and did not continue the service with T-Mobile. I am planning a road trip mid March to mid April and would like a low cost, low use plan for 30 days 9no renewal) while in USA. What do you recommend? I still have the t-mobile SIM but no service. Include cost of SIM if required, activation of a phone # and 30 day call (data + text interested but not absolutely required.

I lived in the States for 14 years and returned to Canada in 2006 and was blown away by the cost of cell service. We opted for Virgin's prepaid plan $10 per month and 10 cents a minute. We hardly used the phone so basically for emergencies. We are now searching for alternatives and the search is frustrating and looks like it is going to be expensive!! A couple of years ago Verizon wanted to get into the Canadian market and after a year of research and thousands of hit/negative/fear ads by the big three, Bell, Rogers and Tellus Verizon decided it wasn't worth their time so again Canadians are screwed!!

I spend a fair bit of time in the UK and well -misery loves company - so to all my American friends I suggest looking at what a UK cell phone plan costs (and you can come to feel some our pain too lol) - unlimited talk/text and 5G for 20 pounds (or 30 bucks)per month -- and when they say unlimited your first - get ready - 650 GB or 1,000 GB (depending on carrier) each month is full on 100% 5G speed. Once you've burned thru your 650 to 1000 GB of data you get throttled. Brits buy a sim and stick it in a hotspot a their primary home internet.

AT&T unlimited plans say in Canada may be limited to 2G speeds, but it's usually not. I'm sure it's just AT&T's way to cover themselves in case the roaming agreement changes and they do have to throttle. As for the 50% usage for two or more consecutive months this limit was removed in June 2018. This was reportedly done for competitive reasons. Makes sense, Verizon and T-Mobile still limit Canada roaming to this day.

🤔Would an American plan work in Canada as I live in Windsor, Ont. across from Detroit Michigan ( cell towers are on Renaissance Center about 600 feet tall building)? 😻 Detroit River is 1/2 to 1 mile across to either city. 🤗
@StephenClark
@StephenClark 2 жыл бұрын
Airwaves don't honour borders, so it should be possible to turn off international roaming and use that plan as much as 40-50km away from the nearest tower. However, wireless signal quality drops exponentially with distance, so your download speeds and call quality can drop QUICKLY the further you get. If you leave international roaming turned on while in Windsor, your phone may prefer to connect with a stronger signal in Canada, and you lose the benefits of a cheap American 5G plan.

Visiting Canada soon and checked the rates for a SIM card with apx. 10GB of data.... Suffice to say that I am still on the floor after falling off my stool. I am truly surprised the exorbitant and unjustified rates of regular mobile phone services... In Europe we in CZE have one of the most expensive rates on the continent and still I am paying 14CAD for 10GB of data and unlimited calls/sms + you gotta love the no roaming charges in the whole of EU = Doesn´t matter if you cross the borders.. calls/data runs normally as if you were at home without restrictions. One question comes to mind though... Doesn´t Canada have an antimonopoly or antitrust laws to combat market share control by a couple of companies?

ONly issue is calls/texts have to be done thru their app.. if you can live with that it seems like a no-brainer.. just about to switch from Fido after a month of crappy service -despite their Network Coverage map showing I'm within their area it turns out I'm only in the the Extended Coverage area with limited connectivity (also shown on the map but nowhere near me) - and after dumping Koodo for treating me like sh*t over erroneous roaming charges after 12 years with them. I'm using my dual sim on my pixel phone, one of which I've kept as a US sim my parents pay for (part of family plan from T-Mobile). I don't just the data here (though I did for a while) and I was told that after a few months if your usage is mostly in Canada they put a stop to it (never happened yet), but it's there and used for calling etc and works great. Afaik Google Fi didn't even have the small print stuff that tmo and the others have (which, again, they're very good with not being assholes about it so far at least). I was in India for 3 years, visited the USA maybe 2 times a year week or two each time and that was it, worked great even data (this was fi). Before I got the Canadian number I was using the us one for a while, but again, they do tell you outright that if your usage skews too much into roaming after a certain time they'll cut your data so ymmv on that. The sad part is, other than that small print it's actually cheaper to pay for an American plan on USD after conversion than to pay for a Canadian one even if you're in Canada most of the time. For us talk and text, freedom of by far the best. $5 addon for unlimited minutes USA talking from Canada...
