I have been doing all my music prep for Serato and RB on my windows desktop with HFS formatted drives with it. Simple tool install once and windows uses HFS just like it's NTFS. Constantly and without a single issue ever I move drives between systems. And NTFS works flawlessly on my macs as well. Anyone with both OS's at home should look into it.

I'm really happy with using Cruzer Blades and my write time seems to be way faster than the one you tested. Do you think there's a difference in write times between mac and Windows or maybe from laptop to laptop? They've never let me down at a gig and because, they're cheap and easy to find, I have a duplicate for every key in my collection. If one fails (happened once in five years of using them), I just duplicate another. Quick, cheap and easy.

Based on the benchmarks online for that drive, the Sandisk Ultra Dual Drive Luxe is about half the speed of our Chroma Drive in random read, and 1/4 the speed in random write. You'll notice a dramatic difference in syncing out from Rekordbox between that drive and ours. That said, if you have something that works, that's great! We just made a good thing, too.

I'd be interested in seeing a comparison of the DJ Techtools drive with other very similar drives out there, particularly the Lexar D400 dual drive that has an identical design for half the price, and which I've been happily using for well over a year prior to DJ Techtools releasing their version. If DJ Techtools has indeed put the work to make their drive write even faster, they may be a worthy upgrade for sure, otherwise it's quite a hard sell at their asking price.
@djtechtoolsАй бұрын
I don't have a Lexar D400 and we've, uh, more than exhausted our budget for "buying other USB drives and comparing them to ours" for the year but based on the ratings I can find online, our drive is about twice as fast at random read operations and four times faster at random writing operations. This has a dramatic impact on how freaking long Rekordbox takes to sync libraries.

Recently saw Theo Parrish rocking the PNY Pro Elite V2. If you can live without the dual USB A/USB C connectors like the dj techtools, they seem much better value. They're a lot faster and start at 256Gb, which is cheaper than the Dj techtools 128Gb option... Currently I'm using a 512gb Philips SSD which is literally cheaper than many (much slower) thumbsticks + 2x 256Gb sd cards.

The only time I’ve EVER used SD cards on CDJs were when I was touring consistently playing B2B with 2 other DJs and we only had 2 CDJs on stage. Instead of constantly hot swapping USBs I just bit the bullet and made a back up of my playlists and sets on a 32GB (which is the largest it can read) SD cards. Came in handy for that, but I genuinely can’t think of another valid use case. Especially with the 32GB limitation on them
@MojaxxАй бұрын
That’s one of the reasons I recommended SD cards in the past - easy changeovers. Plus it is nice to have them fully hidden away safely in the players. That 32gb thing is totally a myth BTW, borne of the fact that windows could only format FAT32 drives up to 32gb in the past. I used much larger cards for years, formatted with a Mac.

Yeah, that's why - for the Chroma Drive - I made sure really get our team to test the drives for as long as possible in both writing-to but also reading-from while plugged into CDJs. I put a few of our drives in my basement and let them play on auto-load across multiple players for a few weeks. Flash memory can and will die on you eventually - that is the nature of the beast when it comes to this type of storage. But that should be the result of heavy, heavy use hours- so far, our drives have lasted for 2,000+ hours of DJ use and not shown any signs of wear of failure in our testing.

I have used usb and SSDs with Rekordbox since CDJ 2000s, i only use SSDs as the read and write-speed are beyond anything a regular usb stick can manage. Do not forget that with speed comes heat and i have had flash and pen-drives / sd card fail on me on several occasions. literally melting. Sdd drives, not so much. I also achieve a full ssd backup and reinstall in less than ten minutes +150gb. Nothing comes even close with other solutions. My suggestion is this. Keep big music collection on the big drives, and for smaller club gigs. 500 tracks or less on usb sticks, if need be. I have at least 4 - 6 ssd drives with me on tour as a redundancy. And several cables and headphones, if something happens. I only use standalone dj gear, and the only computer a bring is the one in my hotel-room. For me security and peace of mind come in first place. I have Samsung T7 with fingerprint security, so if some person would nick my drive, it's completely useless to them. Hardware would be one thing. Your tool that earns you the money are in the the collection of music. Thats *PRICELESS*

would have been nice if you had used sync manager for a bunch of changes which would take into account both read and write speeds....
@Mojaxx28 күн бұрын
In more than a decade of using CDJs, I don’t think I’ve ever had an ‘update library’ reverse sync take more than like, 10 seconds… Even on my slowest drives.
@Nite8527 күн бұрын
@@Mojaxx reverse sync? I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing here .... the way I understand the Sync manager works (in RB6 at least) is that it needs to read the state of every track / playlist on the flash as well as the state of the corresponding ones on the computer and then write the changes to the flash. I sync several thousand tracks and hundreds of playlists to my flashes. I have really fast ones but still, every time I plug them in and sync manager takes over, I'm looking at a solid 15 minutes before it has read and written the changes - a bit less if there are no changes to be made at all. This means that the read speed of the flash (for those of us that use sync) is pretty important in terms of how long a sync takes. I appreciate that most people probably don't use sync manager and just drag playlists over, but still.....

I’m glad that’s working for you, but I believe the advice from Pioneer DJ has always been to only use drives with a single partition on them. So not something I’d recommend.
@arnone1862Ай бұрын
@Mojaxx oh, out of the 1TB it only has one 60GB partition. it's all about those transfer rates. plus, everyone trips out when I plug a literal SSD into a CDJ. 😆
@arnone1862Ай бұрын
also, I wouldn't recommend it either 🤣

@@arnone1862 You've lost me now. Are you saying you have a 1tb drive with a single 60gb partition on it, and nothing else? Why would you do that? Rekordbox gear has always been able utilise the whole 1tb.
@arnone1862Ай бұрын
@@Mojaxx I've never actually owned Rekordbox gear and didn't know they supported 1TB partitions, and thought 60 GB was a safe bet. but now I do, I'll re-size the partition and throw other files on there.

beyond the advertising the USB drive manufacturers are so idiots that the only intelligent ones are the people at DJ Techtools?, I know... it's been put to me that the "chroma" USB from DJ techtools has had its places changed, the read one was changed to the write one and the write one was moved to read, I have that theory because I asked them how many MB/s of read and write it has and they never answered me, also it must be said that all the storage there is on the market is slow at writing, in conclusion I don't think that all the manufacturers of SSDs, USB drives and SD cards are stupid and the only smart ones are the people at DJ Techtools.

Hey Gabriel, our drives have their speeds - real world tests with Rekordbox, not advertised speeds - clearly listed on the product page. You'll find that file size, amount, and many other factors mean that the "read/write" speed on most drives are a best case scenario. Real world tests matter the most :)
