So smart to include the micro-SD card! It can be treated as built-in storage for backup, much better than just having one card slot. Nikon are really showing that there are valid solutions if the maker really wants to, unlike certain other brands that exclude important features just for artificial market segmentation.

They're going to sell a ton of Zf cameras. The broad spectrum of people will always want to get the most capability they can for the least amount that they can. The true definition of value. This is a superb video. The Zf appears to be squarely seated on that plain. When you realize how easy it is to fairly flawlessly double the resolution of a NEF in Lightroom or Photoshop, you're not even really missing out on the resolution. Even the media it uses is more reasonable. I think Nikon has knocked this one out of the park. Huzzah! 😀

As a long time Canon shooter and now a Fuji shooter, I’ve always respected Nikon as a company but never been tempted by any of their cameras. Until now. Wow. This Nikon Zf looks like such a beautiful camera - especially when paired with the 40mm f2. I love my X-T5 and particularly the Fuji glass, but if Nikon can expand their lineup of small primes then the Zf might just be my new best friend.

Matt, between your review and Hugh Brownstones, I’m happy to say I just got the Nikon Zf last month. I traded my Fuji XT5 (which was great but I craved a change) for a mint condition Zf, in the box with the 40mm f2. The camera only had 500 shutter actuations and was flawless with the warranty intact. I’m absolutely thrilled with the Zf. I also got the incredible 50mm 1.8 S Nikkor and the very capable 85mm 1.8S. The Z mount S lenses are astounding. Now I’m saving for a 35mm lens. I’m so sold on Nikon that I’m considering getting a Z5 for my girlfriend who frequently second shoots with me. Nikon is crushing it. I still have my beloved little Fuji X100V, but for my daily carry it’s the Zf. I’m 53, trained on film (Nikon FE and FM2) so the Zf feel like a homecoming. The ergonomics aren’t perfect and I wish it had a joystick but these are minor issues. I really hope Nikon makes more small and affordable retro primes like the 40 and 28. And I do miss the Fuji aperture rings. Hoping Nikon makes that a reality. The Zf is as fun as it is capable. The files from it are gorgeous and it just feels good to hold and shoot. It’s the best of the old and new. I call it my “Back To The Future” camera. It’s terrific.

Nice comparing video. For an FM2 shooter, which i am, it seems like a good camera. A few months ago, I was deciding which camera will be my first digital and I got an X100V. It might have been much harder decision if Zf had been around but I´m glad for X100V because I can still use my FM2´s. I´m sure if I had got a Zf, the old cameras would stayed on the shelf.

Got the ZF over the weekend and the FTZII adapter. It's nice to see the compatibility with the F mount lenses, the older ones have to be manual focused and the others have auto focus working. Like you said in a video its because the older lens require the body to drive the power and a FTZIII adapter would be perfect (if they released one)

Very interesting and very informative . Thank you . The fact that I kept my FM2n because it is so gorgeous ; but my F2 was my true favourite . After carrying bodies and lenses around the globe in the past , I now keep it small with three lenses and one body . Megapixels are really not required above 12. Any with 16, 24, or higher can do the job . Few will make big prints and if you doubt that you can live without full frame should look again at the display boards produced by an iPhone and tell me you need full frame and more megapixels . A nice camera that does so much so well , like the new Nikons are very desirable and who could argue otherwise . But do we need them ? Well, that is subjective and be mindful of GAS. It is a nice camera , but I am now too old to be able to carry it for all day without suffering neck ache . In the studio and on a tripod then I want a mid formate body and lenses or even a 5x4. As I say; it is a lovely piece of work and looks like a camera .

Hey, Can you check how it deals with ftz adapter? The Z8/9 focus the f mount lenses faster than the z6/7 mk 2. How does the zf compare in that regard?
@tolga1cool Жыл бұрын
The only grievance I have is that Nikon really doesnt offer any lenses with an aperture ring. When shooting film with my FE / F3 or even digital I mostly shoot in aperture priority. This mode wont give you any of the prized "retro feel" on the ZF sadly since youll be using control dials again... In that sense for aperture priority only even any of the Sony a7 cameras will be more authentic / retro from a user's perspective since they have loads of lens options with aperture control. A shame really. Otherwise an absolutely amazing camera that I am actually considering to buy
@Jviotr Жыл бұрын

From everything I've seen the Pixel Shift feature does not stitch the images together in camera. You need to use Nikon's NX software in post processing to combine them. Ideally this may eventually be done in camera, but hoping you can also do it via LR/PS or other image processing software rather than only being compatible with NX. Don't see why you wouldn't be able to to the stitching in other software.

I didnt want this, but that backup micro SD, metal top and bottom, brass dials and proper engraving may just deliver the retro hit i get with my old film Nikons. Great video Matt! This let's owners of Z6II see an upgrade path if they don't want to wait for MK III, with possible 6K video recording. For most buying this camera, the new features will be fantastic and having up to 60p (even with a crop) is great as most people aren't going to be doing high level video with it anyways. With color choices, this will appeal to young and old alike, I think Nikon has a it with this one.

I still prefer the "usual" Z5/6/7 form factor - just the Goldilocks mirrorrless size right there for me. I think the Zf would be problematic with even slightly bigger zooms like my 24-120 workhorse due to the fairly miniscule grip*. Not even going into how much tacking on a (limited capability) FTZ and an F lens would mess with balance.... Feature-wise it's very, VERY compelling, no doubt about that - and at that price point it's going to sell stupendously well (Unlike the Df did :P) But I still would rather wait and see what the Z6 mk3 will bring us. My semi-educated guess is that if you can wait a bit longer, you will eventually get all the new stuff (and probably then some) in that with even better ergonomics. If you can forgo the retro style, obviously. *I have to add, this is very much a personal preference - but I have found that having a nice deep grip so one can comfortably hold a camera just by the fingertips matters in my shooting habits a not insignificant amount. Horses for courses.
@Ruylopez778 Жыл бұрын
Nikon would be crazy not to release a retro battery grip for this camera in the style of the old motor drives for that very reason - better ergonomics with bigger lenses or adapted lenses.

One thing not mentioned: if you want the ultimate in low light performance in 2023-and native high resolution is not important to you-then the Zf is the clear winner here. I paid 2299.95 for my Z7 II in this summers Sale. If Nikon follows it's form that will be the retail price after next January. BTW, if the Zf offered 46 MP that would have been my first choice for a mirrorless because it so resembles by beloved F2sb from the control standpoint. Don't really need 46 mp but one thing that extra resolution provides is a much wider range of crop space. This allows me to use my 37 year old EDIF 180mm f2.8 AF-Nikkor as a 180-360mm zoom in a very light weight package. Note, Nikon really dropped the ball by not offering a 200 f 2.8 S line prime. While the 80-200 is an excellent lens it is much heavier than a 200mm Prime would be. Good news is that old 180 is every bit as good as a modern S line lens in terms of image quality.

The Zf is the best value for a do-everything camera that doesn't break the bank (still does 4k video, improved IBIS and AF) but the Z5 I feel is the ultimate value in FF photography in the Z line at least, especailly when it goes on sale for $999. It's not the fastest, but if you want a capable FF camera with IBIS and dual card slots, it's hard to beat, unless you need the faster AF or the 4k video (which the Z5 obviously does that too but with a crop, but I think the Zf can do 4k30 without a crop). But for stills-only, the Z5 is st ill a very good value, and between the two, someone could get a primary and backup body and a lens probably for less than a single Z8.

I always felt like both Nikon and Canon would eventually win people back, once the market was fully in the mirrorless era, even while they were relentless mocked for being 'behind' Sony and Fuji. While the Fujis were vague imitations of the TX-1, Contax RTS and Leica M, I think this is much stronger proposition in terms of film camera legacy and brand identity, combined with actual 'full frame' performance. Being able to flip the screen away and switch to B&W so easily adds to the effect.

I can just speak for myself and say i bought a zfc as a 2nd camera that i felt was more portable than modern mirrorless

Except that it's not free in other markets.

I show them grip in video. It won’t be free though.

It is is a silly point, but why do reviewers keep stating these retro Nikon cameras are based on the "FM2"? The FM2 (I don't own an FM2, but I do own an FM3A) is ergonomically identical to the FM (I own), so why is it not based on an FM? The Nikon Df, and Zfc (I own both) are clearly more similar in design to the original Nikon FE (I own) launched in 1978, a year after the original Nikon FM. I would say all three cameras, the Df, Zfc and Zf (I have pre-ordered) are all actually based on the original 1978 Nikon FE.

Because Nikon states it’s based on the fm2

Missing the z7ii vs zf comparison. Z7ii has more mp, but lacks the newer features. That's the more difficult decision to make

Yes more MP and better cards. Zf smokes it otherwise.

Wonder why they don't release this in Silver colour.. 😢
