I bought an Explorer at a military exchange in 1965 ($300), It has been through two tours of Vietnam along with tours of duty in Korea, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and the Horn of Africa. Somewhere in the middle of all this I was able to pick up a Submariner ($450). I have,over the years spent far more on servicing the items than their initial cost, but I have never skimped on maintenance. They belong to my two stepsons now, and have been through additional tours of Iraq and Afghanistan. I think I got my money’s worth. However, I recently purchased a Christopher Ward Sandhurst. It appears to be just about the best purpose built field watch I have seen. Easy to read, accurate and tough. I don’t think it will out live either of the Rolex watches, but then, neither will I.

I had watched a previous video from Teddy about building a watch collection and thanks to that, I realized that my theme/fav watches are vintage inspired. Circling back to this one, I enjoyed it tremendously because it showcased different categories and price points for vintage inspired watches. That Omega Seamaster 300 is starting to grow on me 😅

Glad you mentioned the SPB243...I got it a few weeks ago and am totally in love with it. The grey sunburst dial turns slightly brownish under certain light condotions. The little details and level of finishing are also great. Nothing flashy but it grew on me quite a lot in this short amount of time

They don't do anything for me and they're excessively expensive. Edit. They also just look like what someone *thinks* an overly manly mans watch should look like. Busy, chronographs and subdials everywhere. Doesn't appeal to me at all.

If you are the kind of person to only spend a couple hundred on a watch then they are indeed expensive, but people saying they aren't worth their price tag while they are willing to put down 20k for a Rolex on the Grey market are kidding themselves.

The blackbay 58 line from Tudor in some ways it seems is the Rolex heritage line. I love it. Really like the big crown pointer date too. Especially the bronze case with the ox blood dial on leather strap. Very cool. Also, honorable mention Hamilton Intra-Matic.
@michaelniemer44492 жыл бұрын
Maybe it’s too much of a given, but the field watch category would be nice to see here; eg Hamilton Khaki Field being inspired, if not outright based, on the military spec’d US army watches of the 1960s and beyond. What else is out there in the mid to high categories for vintage inspired field watches?
@technologist14122 жыл бұрын
Another great looking vintage watch is the Bell & Ross BR V2 Series, namely BRV2-93 GMT. I own it and love it.
@anthonystevens86832 жыл бұрын
Some great options Teddy. The Oris pointer date (Ox blood dial) is one of my favourites. As an option to the Explorer if you are concerned about the 36mm size it's worth a look at the Tudor BB36, I did and it looks fine on my 7" wrist. Seeing the Monaco is an interesting choice, personally I slightly prefer the look of the now for sometime discontinued modular calibre 12 version but it certainly looks great with the Heuer branded calibre 02 within. The BB58 and Heritage Divers are great diver choices as is the Hamilton Intra-matic. There are so many retro inspired watches out there to list but as you say the video would be too long. Is that the Longines sector dial on your wrist in the video? It would be interesting to look at other options including new and current rectangular/square, GMT, manual wind and quartz watches.
@VictorGuillen_FRC2 жыл бұрын
Hello Teddy, can you get Oris bracelets? I need to replace the rubber strap for a bracelet on my Oris Aquis; and replace the leather strap for bracelet in my Pointer Date, I can't stand rubber and leather, but when I purchased mine, they had no braceletes. I'm willing to pay the price for bracelets.

Teddy, I think you should consider the Certina DS Super ph500M, the black dial version, design straight from the late 60's, Swiss brand and model linked with NASA and the US NAVY because of the Tektite project in 1968, some completely unique features with the bezel security system and the sapphire glass, 50bar water resistance, Powermatic 80 movement and under 1k. 43mm diameter and 48mm lug to lug makes it big but very wearable, the AR coating is amazing, the sector dial, I mean... such a solid and well built professional tool watch, but I see very little or almost no reference to that watch outside Europe, only Hodinkee briefly. I would love to see something it on your channel.
