You know what? That cheap bracelet is still better than 90% of expensive fashion watches, my only problem is the damn small lug sizes that some of these 5's come with, makes it little tricky to get them replaced and often limits your choices.

I wear the SNK809 almost daily, it's one of my favorite mechanical watches I own out of several Vostok, Invicta Pro Diver and other Seiko 5 models. Hard to beat the 7S26 movement in them.

Yes, i am wearing one from 1969 now. Also have my grandfathers and fathers. Dads was missing the case gasket, very dirty, still kept great time. Servicing both now. Dad gave me his Navitimer when I was a child and we were at Clark AFB as he flew in combat, jets in VN. He wore Seikos exclusively yet owned very rare watches.

I have a Seiko SNK793 in my collection and it's a fantastic watch. I would definitely suggest upgrading the strap with a nice tan leather one. That small change turns it into a fantastic dress watch. Ice cold.

Its not a very shiny blue unless its in the sun so its very versatile but having a one watch collection would be tough because of its very low water resistance. For a single watch collection, I would look into the Orient Ray 2 in blue or black. In house movement, 200m water resistance, beautiful dial with a day/date complication and very affordable. One of my friends has one and its gorgeous and a great every day watch. Not to mention there is no need to worry about getting caught in the rain, taking a shower, or washing dishes. Good luck!

I bought a Seiko 5 Snxg47k1 earlier this year and it has such a poor power reserve issue. I wear it all day and when I go to bed I put it on the bedside table. In the morning it's often stopped at 4am. I am 74 and not exceptionally active. I have 3 Sea-gull automatic watches and don't have any trouble with them. I took it back to the shop and they could find nothing wrong with it. I will stick with the Sea-gull watches and get rid of the Seiko even though I like the looks. I have a Seiko 4r39a which gains over a minute a day. I had to replace the Hardlex chrystal on the 4r39a as it was badly scratched. No more Seiko's for me Now I will get the 4r39a regulated. Two automatic watches which I love are; Sea-gull flying wheel retrograde day date and a Sapphire chrystal which is accurate to 2 seconds per day and my Sea-gull Ocean Star diver with the 28800bph movement and sapphire chrystal which is tough and accurate.

@@darrenlee1480 I think its a case of " less is more " Darren , don't get me wrong I love the Breitling , but the simple charm of the 5s along with the timeless looks ( excuse the pun ) which makes for a handsome time peace that seems worth a lot more than the asking price , its a lot of watch for not a lot of cash.

That said though, these are great value for money - my original 7009 was about £95 in 1983 so these priced about the same 37 years later makes them a good buy. They do have the look, the quality and reliability. I might certainly buy one.

I bought this exact watch as a gift for my father a few years ago, it's really durable...he is a lumberjack and wears the watch even when he uses the chain saw. He use to have a different watch in the past (not sure what brand) and the hands of the watch fell off after a few usage with the chainsaw.

Had a couple of these, really good automatic piece for the price. The accuracy for me had been decent, gotta keep the watch almost fully wound for it to keep the best time. The absence of hand winding didn't help, but for the price I'm pretty happy with them

I have Seiko 5 SNZG15J (Japan)! I love the watch, it takes one year for me to upgrade the stock outdated 7S36 movement to an NH36. For an additional $30 (regular eBay price for the NH35/36. Which is OEM version of Seiko 4R36 movement ) I have a hacking, hand-winding and 45-hour power reserve. The local watchmaker who's done movements swap is a skilled person. He has regulated the new movement to a + 2-3s a day. I bet he would even agree to strip the movement down, re-oiled it and put it back to together if it calls for it. I can't be any happier, having my Seiko 5 became the watch)

I love your honest and fair review of this watch. I have considered this for months but a few things do concern me that you brought out. First thing is the blue dial being a bit dark. I've purchased other watches from other brands where the blue looks brighter online but when you get it it's almost closer to black. Keep up the great work!

Mike Hynes I have the same watch and If you live in sunny climes the blue dial will be amazing. It shines a really rich, vibrant shade of blue in direct sunshine or under good lighting. It’s my favourite coloured dial out of all my watches.

Seiko 5's are ice cold. While the bracelets leave much to be desired the watches are usually really great in my opinion. I have an SNKK29. I got this one because I had been avoiding seiko for a while because I always saw my grandfather wearing a seiko (not that that's bad or anything, but I am usually one who really would like to avoid copying a style that fits someone I know). I still had to try seiko out, I had 14 watches in my collection and none were seikos. I also kept hearing all the praise from reviewers. I decided to buy the SNKK29 because I had never seen anyone wear it before and it was so odd in its color that I thought it would be a good piece for the collection. I ended up enjoying it a lot with more luck on a nato strap than the original bracelet. Overall it was very impressive for the price and something I didn't have to sell.

In most ways, the simple Seiko 5's are the mechanical analogue equivalents of Casio F-91W. The only features of the F-91W totally absent from the Seiko 5's are the alarm, the stopwatch and hourly beep.

As someone said, "the Seiko 5 is kind of a 'gateway drug' to the world of automatic watches." My first was the Explorer-esque black dial SNKE63 with white 6,9,12. My next was the black dial SNKL23 purchased right after Hodinkee proclaimed it, "A Seventy-Five Dollar Watch That Looks Like A Million Bucks." Both are great pieces that were less than $75 shipped each. (More $$ now.) So I say 'Ice cold' assuming that means the best.

The bracelet of seiko5 may be cheap in the eyes of watch enthusiasts, but I find it wears comfortably on my wrist, and I think it looks not bad at this price point, really. Of course, if one can spend $ to get a decent bracelet, then it will no doubt be a nice upgrade to the watch.

Very honest review Ben . I put my Sieko 5 on a nice black leather strap . I moved up to better watches because I like to hand wind them ( still automatic ) I also prefer the crown at the 3 o'clock . I like the black/red second variant a lot. It is dressy/sporty and the matt/sunburst difference stands out very well. It is one of my favourites. The white silver one is a bit of a let down. My other favourite is the snk615 with a lovely bright blue yellow colour scheme and sporty appearance. The lume is delicately placed inside the hour indices, in stead of just on top of and it has a special marker for 12 o’clock, helping you at night to not rotate your watch while reading. You got to love the bracelet though and be lucky with it’s quality, or you will find yourself filling hair-pinch slits with nail polish or super glue.

Love those Archie clips. Also... £300 for the new Seiko 5 range. Wow. Anyway, back on point: like you I find this particular watch a little too conservative, but if you're talking about Seiko 5 as a range, I'd have to put it in cool because I think it's fair to say they have something to suit, perhaps not everyone, but certainly most people. My first mechanical watch (only back in 2016, mind) was a Seiko 5 - more of a field watch variant - and, although it doesn't get much wrist time from me these days, I still think it's a cool piece. It would certainly be really tough to find something better for the £80 I paid. Great value for money.

I also own a somewhat vintage quartz movement Seiko that needs a new battery. After owning two now I can say they don't quit. They're fashionable workhorses so to speak.

I've got a Seiko 5 in gold ( 5 micron I belive - still good ) , it was given to me in 1968 ... yes , last century ..old millennium. ! Not worn much , 3 services in 52 years . Just got it back last week from a service , still looks fantastic and going like a dream , cost $ 30 AUD in '68 . ! Just purchased an SPB 053 , got rid of the strap and refitted with a Strapcode Super ' O ' . So now the Seamaster can go in the drawer for a while. Advice from an old guy , buy the best that you can , reward yourself sometimes . We are a LONG TIME DEAD .

Good review! In between cool and uncool imo. The size is absolutely perfect for you. I’ve got the same watch but hardly ever wear it. Like you, the design doesn’t quite work for me. The indices also look too big for the relatively small dial size imo. Not only that but the movement is very imprecise compared with the newer Seiko 4R36. I regulated mine but it soon went way out again in terms of accuracy. Ps the dark blue dial looks amazing in direct sunlight but you don’t get much chance of that in here in the UK!

The Seiko 5 series has a lot of good watches. It's a great first watch for someone getting into automatics. The 7S26 isn't the best movement (although it's reliable), and the bracelets are crap, But put it on a nice strap and it's a fine first automatic. :)

My favorite Seiko 5 is the sarz005. I love that watch. The strap is junk but throw it on a leather strap with white stitching. It's a fantastic everyday t-shirt and jeans watch that's not a diver.

The Seiko 5 watch is definitely ice cold. I own three of them. The SNK795K1 which I have has a black dial with black day date window and a red second hand. It’s very nice 👍🏻

Would you happen to know when this was probably first released? My father gave me his snk794 version with a 7S26A movement. All it tells is it was released between 1996 to 2006. He doesn't quite remember when he got it. Maybe late 90s, is that possible?

I bought this and the snkl45. Returned the snl45. Very similar but when you compare them side by side the snkl45 looked very cluttered with the extra long indices and hands and even more so considering the size of the case. On the 793 everything seems to be spaced out evenly balanced. The 45 is also a bit thicker (bulkier) than the snkl793/795. Also imo the dauphine hands on the 45 are a bit feminine on an already thin wrist.

The Seiko 5 is kind of a "gateway drug" to the world of automatic watches. The movement is basic, the bracelet terrible and the crystal is only mineral glass, but the watches have a certain charm and paired with a good quality replacement strap, pretty versatile for smart or casual wear.

I have two Seiko 5's. One is vintage, marked made in Japan, the other i got last year. its made in China, i think... but its Seiko movement. it's excellent,!

I had one but flipped it. Based on my three years of collecting Seiko I would steer people away from Seiko not made in Japan. I've had issues with two of five watches that were not made in Japan. My SNK793 had a particle at the 10 o'clock and scratches on the dial. My SRPC91 Save the Ocean Turtle has a misaligned chapter ring and a minor defect on the dial. I am a Seikophile but steer clear of K models.

Do you have intel that suggests that this and other Seiko 5s are being discontinued? If not, I think you may be confused by the fact that the SKX007 (and its siblings) were discontinued and soon thereafter "replaced' by a new line of Seiko 5 Sports watches. So the only thing that was discontinued was the SKX line; I've seen nothing to suggest that this SNK793 or any others in the Seiko 5 line have been discontinued.

I own the SNKL23, SNKD99, SNK803 and just ordered the SNXS79. To be honest the one picked in the video is one of the less appealing ones. Replacing the bracelets with nice straps or solid bracelets will transform them into much more expensive looking watches. Please checkout the SNKL23, SNXS79 and perhaps SNK393.

Cool. Though, I have this exact watch and it is currently with Seiko to be repaired as it arrived with a broken hairspring/balance wheel, so can't recommend it without caveats.

SNKS77 Same Watch harder to find , nicer blue with much better lume. I've been eyeballing them myself..... lol 😁

I have an SNXS77, after I sold my SNK793 :D It has much nicer case shape, lugs, markers and hands ;) Although at 19mm it is sort of hard to find straps for it, but once you do, it looks noticeably better than a skinny 18mm one.

Finding an automatic watch under £1000 that fits a 6 inch wrist is a bloody nightmare. If not for seiko, I would have to invest in omega, longines or breitling. And most of them offer quartz...

Picked up the SNKL23 not too long ago and I love it. Looks just like the SARB033. Swapped out the bracelet for a nice leather brown leather strap.
