Seiko 5 has a line of great looking, great wearing and reliable automatic field watches for $100. Honestly, I thought it was good that they mentioned a Rolex in nearly every category as a luxury option, but they should have also mentioned a Seiko in every category as a starter option. Seiko's lineup is that broad and consistently high quality.
@ryantaylor52972 жыл бұрын
Could I trouble you for a second set of these? Mainly an alternative to the Orient, Vostok, and Seiko 5.
@starfthegreat2 жыл бұрын
@@ryantaylor5297 if you're looking for Quartz watches, Casio has you covered in every category. Casio Duro is a great dive watch that costs less than 100 usd, Casio also has some decent dress quartz watches also (also under 100 usd), and any steel bracelet Casio Lineage is a good alternative to the Seiko 5. Otherwise Citizen is another good option, I'm not too familiar with their offerings but they have quality sports and dive watches for 100-250 usd. If you're willing to pay a little bit more, you can also get a solar powered Citizen watch in their Eco Drive line. The Orient Kamasu (150usd-300usd) is otherwise a great automatic dive watch, and you can also find some good Seiko divers for around 200-350 usd. Another brand to look into is Bulova, they have dress watches that go for around 200-300usd. If you're budget is bigger, then maybe you can even consider a Swiss watch. Tissot has its quartz PRX watch that retails for like 375usd, and you can even get an automatic Tissot Le Locle dress watch for a similar or slightly higher price. Another Swiss brand I could suggest is Mido. It's usually more expensive but if you're lucky you can get them at a discount for around 400usd.

I enjoyed the way this was presented, and the watches that were selected for each category were well considered - however - every single recap section that called out the “investment” watch is, at best, very incorrect. I’m seeing a lot of luxury watches being categorized as such, but not also as investment pieces. For instance, both Vacheron and Cartier are considered luxury timepieces, but the Vacheron is the better investment as it’s part of the Big Three. Your biggest mistake being labeling the Tag Heuer as an investment timepiece, in the same category as a Rolex, which also happens to be a steel Daytona in this instance. Same goes for a Mont Blanc geosphere classified as an investment over the Rolex Explorer 2. Lastly, a Bell & Ross, which I’m a big fan of, is not an investment timepiece. All that said, I’d like to see more of this in the future 👍

I mean I am not an english speaker... But I thought they used the term investment more like, u have to invest some money to get this watch, but it is still not high end luxury. So Investment = between affordable and luxury, the midway. Otherwise it wouldn't make sense, you are right.
@thetimist2 жыл бұрын
@Slayguy I can see your logic - unfortunately if you're right and if that was indeed their intent, then a "entry/mid-range/high-end" categorization would have been more appropriate. This is because the term "investment" is used very often in the watch community/industry and it is almost exclusively paired up with and associated to watches that sell over the MSRP or Retail price. Watch brands known to fall under "investment" timepieces are Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, and Vacheron Constantin. Definitely not a Tag Heuer Monaco or a Bell & Ross. Even "aspirational" would have been a better descriptor to denote "something you need to save up money for" as opposed to "investment." In any case, words are words, I just wanted to make sure that anyone watching this video that isn't as deep into the watch world doesn't get confused and starts to believe that a Tag Heuer Monaco (which is a watch north of $6,000) should be considered an investment timepiece. It's a nice watch, and people should buy whatever they like and can afford, but an investment it is not 👍

About the Montblanc geosphere and why it has the north, south, east and west on the bezel, you can actually use a mechanical watch like the montblanc one or any other to tell direction. You lay the watch horizontally, align the hour hand with the sun, and now the middle point between the aligned hour hand and 12 o'clock position on dial roughly indicates which direction south is.

Okay. So I'm gong to critique this video. First, they parsed sports watches into subcategories that don't exist, and in the process completely excluded the simple OG 3-hand day/date sports watch (e.g., the Oyster Perpetual) that defined the category in the first place. Second, while chronographs are generally considered sports watches, dive watches and aviation/pilot watches more appropriately fit the category of "tool watches." Third, field watches are similarly not sports watches; they are *field* watches. Fourth, that Mont Blanc is *not* a field watch. Fifth, and lastly, regarding Seiko, it's pronounced PRO-specs (as in "professional specifications"), not "prah-specs."
@RedwoodAggie2 жыл бұрын

“A LITTLE better than the Seiko Prospex is the Tudor Black Bay. Good first watch. You won’t find many watches in that price range that are better than that.” All of these statements were so off I don’t even know where to start lmao. Your first watch should not be in the $5000 range. Find a good watch in the $300-1500 (depending on your budget) range, and scope it out. This will most likely be a Seiko, Citizen, or Orient since nothing can rival the value of the Japanese watchmakers. See what you like and dislike, so that when you are ready to invest in a $5000+ watch you’ll know what to look for. Seiko is my favourite brand because they make the best affordable watches (Seiko 5’s) all the way up to Grand Seiko’s which rival Rolex, and everything between that price range. They make a watch for everyone. But I don’t think the Tudor Black Bay is just a “little” better than the Seiko Prospex. Tudor is a baby Rolex, you’ll be getting that level quality with the Black Bay. The Prospex sits just above Seiko’s entry level line. There’s a large price difference, you’ll have a difference in quality no matter which 2 brands you’ll compare at those different price points. Lastly - there are many brands that make watches in that range that Tudor sits at. Longines, Tag Heuer, Hamilton, Omega (at their entry pricepoint) all compare and are household names. There is an endless list of watches at every single price range, and although the Black Bay is one of my favourite watches, don’t think that it’s the only watch that sits in that entry-level luxury market. Again, find what you like by buying an inexpensive watch (whatever inexpensive means to you), and when you learn and diversify more, then you’ll be more confident and ready to invest in a timepiece that you will truly love.

If you want to stay in a low-ish price range I suggest a Seiko SRPD, a Tissot PRX, or a Junghans Max Bill.

Try the Casio MDV106 for around $50. It follows the Rolex Submariner asthetic. Or look at the Timex Weekender for around $30.
