Hi .. I am so glad and grateful that you made this video! I'm a senior and I bought a really cool, fat tire ebike for stability, for transport and cargo independence from grid failure & gas expenses, and in my preparedness head space, I invested in 2, 100w solar panels, and a battery that could keep my fridge going for a little while. I couldn't get any info about how to hook up the ebike battery (48v) to the solar panel (now I know that 2, 100w panels would be too much) and that to hook one up, I need to get a charge controller. ...... anyways ... you helped me a lot and I thank you. (By the way, my bike has 7 gears that work very nicely without a battery so as long as my legs don't give out, this old lady can still motor .. lol)

Dude,I absolutely love it. I've been using an e-bike for 2 years now to commute to work, and I've been using my foldable powerfilm for close to 4 now. Its a small one but for charging little things it works great. The ebike on the other hand paid for itself in fuel savings in about 4 months. It is also a 4"x 26 tire. I wish I had gone for a more common tire size to be honest, just because of availability. The larger footprint is great in harsher terrain, ie , sand, snow, mud, but if your tread is worn, you're out of luck. But thanks again for this very informative video, keep on keeping on dude ;)

I got an ebike a few years ago right at the limit (750w) where it is still considered a pedal bike on sidewalks, parks and wildlife areas where motor vehicles are outlawed. It has been a useful tool even on private land to haul out game in areas where side by sides can’t go. It had enough power with a little pedal to get up out of a canyon. Also they are more silent and quicker than walking along with not leaving human scent for deer.

Imagine an e-bike which allowed you to use the battery/e-motor boost when wanted but also allowed you to turn off the motor and use the e-bike as a regular bike, BUT, had an extra "gear setting" which would activate a mini generator using the power of your legs to recharge the e-bike battery, and I suppose you could use this feature when you are feeling fresh or on easy terrain or even, hoise up the back wheel just a bit off the ground, and while standing upright/still, "ride" the bike in place, but activate the generator option... NOW THAT is an e-bike i would pay $3k for!!!!!

Its called regenerative breaking... most e-bikes can not do that, because they have a freewheel clutch, so pedaling/moving the bike forward does not move the motor... so yes, all e-bikes can be ridden like a normal bike, just heavy. You can get motors with no clutch, or no gears, that can generate power with regen breaking, or can be set up to make power while you pedal... you would be surprised how much energy it would take out of you to charge a battery.

I also have a pet trailer for it too. I have hand warmer that go over the grips for cold weather I would remove the shiny things in SHTF. It's not nearly as sturdy as the Rambo, but it only cost me about 1800 bucks, including the tools to actually build it. It's still an MTB tho, it does off-road with ease, has a range of around 40-50 miles(when using peddle assist moderately, on throttle only it'll be about 30), does about 35 mph on flat road. I added pannier bags for extra carrying capacity, which vastly expands its utility for daily use.

As a keen cyclist who uses their bike to do the weekly food shop as well as just going out for fun, I'd advise anyone considering something like this to at least consider a normal bike first. Most non-cyclists seem to gravitate towards mountain bikes but honestly - unless you're planning on tackling the red and black routes at your local trail, they're not as practical as what would be marketed as a touring bike, or at least a gravel bike if the majority of your riding will be on roads or light trails. Don't under-estimate your budget for a good D-lock, a rear rack, panniers & good lights as well as a small repair kit. Full-length mudguards make a world of difference, at least here in Scotland they do. And whatever you decide - please don't just leave it in storage as just another prep! Get out there and ride. It's a great way to keep fit, lose weight if you need to and ....get from A to B! 😀

Definitely a good option to have this combo if you’re a prepper . I just got my Happyrun G50 e-bike & considering solar for the cost effective recharge. Plus they’re really fun

I hope this guy hasn't gotten to a point in his career where he wasn't having fun riding through a forest on an ebike with a bug out bag and crossbow because that looked fun as F--K!!!! Other than that ebikes and normal bikes do have a place on a prepper list but man... this stuff is expensive. This is for the affluent prepper... not the paycheck to paycheck prepper like most of us.

I would go with a regular mountain bike fitted with short fenders plus a rack over the back tire. It is EMP pulse-proof and never needs charging at an inconvenient time. The much faster e-bike would be way too desirable during a prolonged grid-down and likely to make the rider a target for criminals armed with a rifle who want that e-bike. Alternatively, I would go with a saddle horse as my transportation anywhere but on mountains and in forests. Most people these days do not know how to ride a horse and many city folks are afraid of horses, so horses are less likely than bicycles to get stolen. And when you are camping at night, a horse will get agitated and make noise if smells or hears a dangerous wild animal or people approaching. No bike will do that for you.
@DJRockford832 жыл бұрын
Or it'll be targeted by thieves etc BEFORE shtf just because it's expensive, especially in urban areas. Make your bike look as scuzzy as possible so it's less of a target

I have been an e-bike owner for four years. So I will put my two cents in. The Rambo is good but very expensive. I currently can purchase two capable off road e-bikes for the cost of one Rambo. So if cost is a factor the Rambo is not for you. The mid drive motor will give you more torque. That is the up side of a mid drive. The down side is if the chain breaks you are walking. the mid drive is known to stress a chain far more then a normal analog bike, so breakage is a concern. A geared hub motor will not give you the same hill climbing ability but will work even if the chain breaks. A non-geared motor will have even less hill climbing ability but has no real moving parts. If things go south I would not want to depend on a mid drive. Another concern is battery size, bigger is better. If traveling you may not have time to set up that solar rig and sit for 5 to 6 hours. A larger battery or carrying a spare will keep you on the move and may save your life.
@craigfreeman7842 жыл бұрын
Another issue with the Rambo it has no rack. Many cheaper non cargo e-bike have racks. The extra cargo hauling a rack give you may be the difference between life and death.

That is a rocking set up. I have been using the amorphous panels for many years I am in Wisconsin. Not the best for solar. They will charge with snow on them when it is snowing, in the rain. I could see an ebike very useful when a single person when traveling to a bugout location and has a preselected, offroad route to that location due to the limited cargo capacity of the ebike. Also, in a SHTF situation, it enables the person to select a location that cannot be accessible by a car or truck. A shelter that is stealthy enough so that it cannot be detected by air (especially by a drone) or someone on foot. Note that during WW II, it was lights out or windows blacked out during air raid drills.

I’d be worried on how it would do in -30 like our Canadian winters. I imagine those batteries don’t like frigid cold like most used batteries
@fustercluck24602 жыл бұрын
I got a jackery battery I used this winter and I had to constantly work at keeping it warm, or it wouldn't charge from my solar panels. I imagine this thing is the same principle? At sun up, I'd get out of my sleeping bag and hammock, plug in the battery to charge, stick it in the sleeping bag and my residual body keep would let it charge for several hours before the cold got in.

From my own experience with E-bikes, the batteries are pretty temperamental things, that suffer with degraded performance in temperature extremes at both ends of the scale. Extreme heat turns the battery off, so does extreme cold.
