I do like seeing how Hackney compares to the rest of London because I've heard a lot of good things about the place in terms of bikeability. But if your priority is zero traffic and happy to keep stopping for dogs and joggers, the towpath, regents row and Broadway Market to London Fields are a good compromise.

I concur with your routing here, although do suggest one minor/pedantic difference. When cycling on Colebrook Row I turn right early before the Q2 signage, at 3:40 (Vincent Terrace), then left onto Danbury Street. I find it's nicer to cycle as you can see the canal for a brief moment and get to cycle over the small bridge, and also it is easier to not miss this right turn off of Colebrook since you have all the trees/the canal as a visual cue. Keep up the good work with these videos, they are brilliant. I only wish they existed when I first moved here and had to figure this all out on my own!
@Londoncycleroutes3 жыл бұрын
That's a good idea and makes a lot of sense! It's probably a nicer cycle. In defence of the existing route I'd say it's a bit easier to tell people to follow the signs for this section, I suppose there is a trade-off
@MattDavis_BeechingsGhosts3 жыл бұрын
Brilliant! Really great intuitive route and so little traffic in comparison to the roads, however, you're letting the side down with traffic violations at 2:18, 3:43, 11:27 and 16:04 despite mentioning at 14:27 to "obey the signals". I appreciate there's cars doing naughty things like at 10:40 but I do like how you emphasise being nice to pedestrians like at 7:58. As a pedestrian I've had countless encounters and near hits on Judd Street with those cyclists who go straight through red lights and plough zebras, but generally you're a great cyclist and pretty fast too! Thank you
@Londoncycleroutes3 жыл бұрын
Thanks but I think you need to look closer on most of those! I wait for the green light at each one (and you can see it turn green if you look closely). The video is cut to remove the time waiting at the light so that it isn't boring. one of the zebras you flag (the one in Islington) you are right though, I technically should have stopped, as the person had just started to cross - however I promise the person crossing didn't seem to bothered as they were quite far away!

Excellent video, as is the one between Walthamstow and the city. I was looking for something to help a less experienced cyclist and this does the job very well. I commuted this way off and on between 1990 and 2013, and you use many of the sub-routes I worked out then (using LCC and later TfL guides). It's good to see that improvements have been made which fix some of the problems with my routes. Your route is also vastly better than what I got as a 'Cyclestreets quiet route' because it cuts out the majority of the 'very busy sections' without actually adding much to the time. Shame that Middleton Road still seems problematic. I have had a number of scary experiences in the dip, mostly going in the opposite direction. Fortunately Beauvoir Town is very calming.
@Londoncycleroutes3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! That’s interesting to know that the barebones of the route were there that far back. Have your bad experiences on Middleton Rd been since the filter got put in? It’s always been ok for me but I suppose that’s not too surprising, that dip is a serious fundamental design flaw- probably thanks to whoever built the railway back in the day!
@stevencain22583 жыл бұрын
@@Londoncycleroutes Most of the route from Packenham Road to what is now Lea Bridge station is very familiar to me, but some bits only worked in the other direction. For example, Margery St used to be down only - the separated contraflow looks great, and saves what was a tricky entry and an awkward ascent up Lloyd Baker St. The funniest bit of the ride was where you said 'Careful not to miss the turn' which felt like telepathy. As regards Middleton Road, I was reacting to one of the comments - I haven't done this for a long time; having watched again, I see that there is more street furniture than in my day, and it might well have the effect of slowing down westward traffic.
@stevencain22583 жыл бұрын
Of course, without the cycle lanes on Lea Bridge road, you had to divert to get a quiet route. Quickest was Argall Avenue/ paths past the bread factory/ South Access Road / Low Hall / Downsfield / Queens Road. More pleasant was going up the Lea towpath to Springfield Park and crossing to Coppermill Lane. And more recently the route through Lea Valley Park to Coppermill. These are all slower, and there is quite a lot of wiggling around to stay on quiet roads when you get into Walthamstow proper.
@alexball59073 жыл бұрын
It's worth noting that for a much slower and relaxed way to get from King's Cross to Lea Bridge, you could just follow the canal. Very much slower and sometimes quite crowded, but a very different side to London.

I was going to say that the cycle tracks in Walthamstow look awful, just like what Bexley council has done and made shared pavements without taking any priority away from cars, but they actually look pretty good. Perhaps if other councils used these terrible cycle routes and transformed them so you have priority over side roads, LTNs, and good quality paving with clear separation and actual routes, it could be an easy way to increase cycling in those areas.
@Londoncycleroutes3 жыл бұрын
completely agree, side-road priority is so important - basically the difference between treating cycles as a serious mode of transport, and just giving people somewhere to hide in the pavement

Even after cycling daily in London for three years I get confused with a lot of the newer cycle crossings, paths and shared streets. Love your video, but Middleton Road not a nice place to cycle down? The way you go on, you want all cars banned from the road. Some LTN are good, but they went overboard meaning sat navs took them on a rat run only for the council to close them as well and cause chaos elsewhere. And regards to De Beauvoir - (I am a resident), I think historically it's derived from France, ergo it will be french. It's just been 'cocknified', although I know neighbour who was say it like this. Even the buses don't. Anyway - like your video.
@liamness3 жыл бұрын
I used to commute down Middleton Road, more than once with a cyclist coming the other way, a driver would overtake in between us. The width restriction in itself wasn't enough, there was still through traffic (i.e. people in a bloody hurry who don't care how their driving is percieved because they're not from the area) to prevent it being a comfortable cycling route.
@walshiedee3 жыл бұрын
@@liamness goodness me - you mean a car overlook you; you okay? It seems to me that some cyclists (and lobbyists) are campaigning for a complete ban on the car. It's nuts. Not everyone can cycle all the time, like myself. Middleton road was never ever an issue.
@liamness3 жыл бұрын
@@walshiedee I'm fine yes, obviously. But it's the kind of behaviour that most people will put most people off cycling. If you want people cycling on the pavement, or to just sack the whole thing and get a car themselves, then I suppose I could see why you wouldn't have a problem with it.
@walshiedee3 жыл бұрын
@@liamness but you're isolating one incident, which will likely happen on every road in London. I don't even want to go down the road of how terrifying it is to drive through central London through fear of hitting a cyclist who are being beyond unruly. (I understand it's not the same exact event, but it's not to dissimilar either).
@liamness3 жыл бұрын
@@walshiedee Bear in mind it's more "terrifying" for the cyclists, as they aren't the ones in a big box with airbags etc. Having lots of cyclists and motorists and mixing in the same space isn't a good idea generally, it makes this kind of conflict more likely. Should separate cycling and vehicle routes wherever possible to avoid this. Segregated cycle tracks are one way to achieve that, filtering is another. Middleton Road is an official cycling route, so inexperienced or casual cyclists will be using it, assuming it is a safe and comfortable environment for riding. As such it makes no sense to let through traffic down it.
