The BEST Way To Do Offset Hard Flash Portraits

This is just a quick shoot with some tips on shooting offset hard flash portraits. It's a really trendy look right now. It has a Polaroid look but way more professional.

Nice video and love the images. I hand hold a flash doing dance floor shots. I decided to get a pistol type grip to mount the flash to. It keeps me from accidentally messing with flash settings, and gives a little bit higher reach when needed.

Wasn’t going to watch this…changed my mind…glad I did! Results were amazingly consistent. You were working very freestyle, so was the consistency due mostly to post processing? I would really like to see some pro, hopefully yourself, do a similar shoot using TTL and showing the problems that result and how shooting manually adjusted flash solves them. It just seems to me that in a freestyle shoot, TTL + compensation would be easier and faster. Would appreciate hearing your views.

It really depends on what your environment is like and other little factors. If your environment is really bright and there are a lot of bright tones in your scene, TTL will more than likely underexpose your subject; if TTL sees a lot of dark tones in your image, it will most likely overexpose your subject. TTL works on the same metering system your camera does so it's tripped up by the same things. So if you go from location to location in one shoot, with the brightness levels drastically differing with each location, manual flash may be the better way to go as the flash power will remain consistent every shot and will only change when YOU change it.

@@jasonbodden8816 Well, not the way I understand it. TTL fires one or more flashes sequentially, with really short pre-flashes, figures out the duration for each, and executes that planned exposure. Not saying it's foolproof, but if conditions change, each shot gets a re-evaluation. I asked if TTL might help you, but I think you get great results without it, and likely never tried it. Your answer did not reveal any significant knowledge of TTL, and that is fine. Keep doing what works for you.

Please help! I bought the x3 trigger for my a7iv and v1 and i can't get the trigger to connect to my flash. Same channel, id and everything. But the flash won't respond. On camera, it works like magic but idk what im doing wrong when it's off.
